In June '92, Bob Dylan recorded a couple of tracks with David Bromberg in Chicago's Acme Studios. Sadly, none of these were released, until Tell Tale Signs , the 8th installment in the Bootleg Series , gave us Miss The Mississippi and Duncan And Brady . Of at least eight other songs recorded at the Bromberg sessions that remain in the vaults, three rather lofi-sounding but fine tracks are circulating in collector's circles: two takes on Bromberg originals, and the beautiful traditional Polly Vaughn . Bob [...]

David Bromberg: Bull Run Paddy [purchase] Despite appearances, David Bromberg is not actually a NY Jew (as I previously suggested) : he hails originally from NJ and his current domicile is Delaware ( = none of the above). Among the most eclectic and most accomplished guitarists alive, (his official website lists the multitude of concerts he has performed over the years!), the man is a stringed instrument master. [...]
Welcome to Danny's Guitar Shop , a new cable television series hosted by songwriter and musician Danny Gold , who also is the owner of Danny's Guitar Shop in Narberth. The concept for Danny's Guitar Shop began as a radio series that was broadcast on the WXPN morning show during the summer of 2008. Gold presented the idea to me to run on XPN; working with WXPN's Bob Bumbera and myself, Gold hosted and co-produced the audio series that you can listen to here . Gold and his colleagues [...]
Fans of David Bromberg will be able to view some new sides to an old master in this new album.
The old masters are still cooking and making hot roots music for the summer of 2011.
Grammy nominated Americana musicians' musician, David Bromberg released his new CD, Use Me this month. John Hiatt, Levon Helm, Linda Ronstadt and others were happy to join in with him. This beloved collaborator talks with PopMatters 20 Questions about the many influences, musical and otherwise, that have shaped him. Born in Philadelphia in 1945 and raised in Tarrytown, New York, "I listened to rock 'n' roll and whatever else was on the radio," says David Bromberg. "I discovered Pete Seeger and The Weavers and, through them, Reverend Gary Davis. I then discovered Big Bill Broonzy, [...]

David Bromberg enlists some old friends to help create his new album.

Every Wednesday, I feature a brief review of at least one album that has been submitted to me through the ReviewShine website. I have cleverly titled this recurring segment "ReviewShine Wednesday." I've been excited about today's post featuring to highly regarded artists for a few days now. It's not often that I get to tackle established musicians in this ReviewShine space. Then I saw Ernie's post over at 27 Leggies on Monday . Now I'm a copycat. Oh well. Go read that post first (it's a little more in-depth than [...]
MUSIC NEWS - DAVID BROMBERG announces his follow up to his 2007 Try Me One More Time (after a 17 year recording hiatus) with the upcoming release on July 12 of USE ME (out via Appleseed Records. And for this one Bromberg asked some of his favorite singer-songwriters and musicians to write (or choose), produce, and perform on songs tailored to his versatile but distinctive guitarist and vocalist skills. Responding were well-known artists from the many genres that comprise the amorphous "Americana" musical category. Folks like the rootsy singer-songwriters: John Hiatt , the [...]

Philly-born David Bromberg (who has been a Wilmington, DE, resident since 2002) is releasing a new album, Use Me , on July 12th on Appleseed Recordings . It's a star-studded musical collaboration that includes appearances by Linda Ronstadt, Levon Helm, Dr. John, Widespread Panic, and Keb' Mo'. Bromberg also worked with the Butcher Brothers (Phil and Joe Nicolo) who produced the album's title song, a cover of the Bill Withers song, "Use Me." Other contributions come from John Hiatt (who wrote a song for the album), Vince Gill, and Tim O'Brien. Below, a video of "Sharon" [...]

David Bromberg Band : I Like to Sleep Late in the Morning [ purchase ] Like Boyhowdy, I am nocturnal, and like him, I should fix that for similar reasons. So this song seemed to me to be the perfect follow-up to his post. Sleeping late follows directly from being up too late, on a good day. This song was released on a major label in 1975. Today, that could never happen. Sleep Late starts out sounding like a folk number with a hint of blues. Before it ends, [...]

Beastie Boys - Johnny Ryall [ CD ] [ mp3 ] [ vinyl ] I think most sentient beings can agree that Paul's Boutique is one of the greatest albums of the last 20-30 years. Catch me on the right day and I might say it's the greatest album ever. Released in 1989, Paul's was the by-product of 7 men: The Beastie Boys , an LA DJ named Matt Dike (who later went on to co-found Delicious Vinyl ), two other LA DJs [...]

Leftovers, especially this year, have been a lot of songs from "themes I missed in the time I was here." That's as true of my posts as anyone else's. But I missed our Little Black Book theme because it happened before I became involved in Star Maker Machine. So I never saw the formal definition of the theme. It seems to me that a little black book implies that something illicit is going on. These ladies are not entirely respectable, and you keep them secret. Here are two who fit that description perfectly. [...]
I've always liked this Elizabeth Cotten song. MP3 File yousendit

We're going way back to 1977 for this one from Reckless Abandon. MP3 File yousendit
(Sevens, a new feature on Aquarium Drunkard, pays tribute to the art of the individual song.) Some songs feel like a carnival. Some songs feel like a saloon. And some songs manage to convey both (yeah, I'm lookin' at you Tom Waits). Yes, David Bromberg's swaying "Sharon" is one such song. A loose and funky [...]
This song was written by Elizabeth Cotton, and I am generally partial to the version sung by her granddaughter on the album of the same name released in 1967. When I saw this cover, I gave it a listen and was surprised by how much I liked it. I didn't expect that. This is from the album Try Me One More Time. MP3 File

After posting my "Black Betty" throwdown a few weeks ago, I got to thinking that a fun reoccurring piece could be posting the history of songs...as best as I can...along with a collection of artists doing their own spin on them. The next obvious song had to be "Moonshiner". The first version of the song I'd ever heard was Uncle Tupelo's, which is a cover of Dylan's Bootleg Series recording of the track. The exact origin of "Moonshiner" is disputed, but it's widely believed the song originated as the Irish folk song "The Moonshiner". In his [...]
