Spring has sprung, and I for one am ecstatic. I'm ready to shed my coat in favor of tank tops, and don strappy sandals instead of boots. But for some, spring's arrival isn't as welcome. It signals our slow-but-steady entry into 100+ degree temperatureland, and even the promise of sno-cones and watering holes can't subside that fear. Alas, there are some songs that just put me in a happy mood, giving me that extra spring in my step, in more ways than one. (Forgive me, they can't all be winners). I've got an upbeat playlist that's sure to help you [...]

Have you seen Stop Making Sense (1984)? Do you have the entire Talking Heads catalog on your iPod? How about the Byrne/Eno collaboration projects? Even that one with all the weird newscast sampling that music critics seem to hate? No? Well, no matter, this recommendation still applies to you. David Byrne’s performance last Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 would have blown your mind, regardless of your inability to commit to such obsessive Byrne love. Twenty-five years after the legendary Talking Heads’ “Stop Making Sense” tour, David still manages [...]

David Byrne & Brian Eno - Strange Overtones The Mud Hut
What’s different about David Byrne in 2009? His suit fits. The notorious image from Stop Making Sense of Byrne in the big-and-tall suit, undulating like a used-car-lot figurine, is burned in the brains of the YouTube generation. These days? He’s that weird guy with white hair who curated a stage at Bonnaroo two weeks ago. [...]
"Anxiety and angst can certainly produce some interesting work, but it's not the only way to make music. I'm also not as obsessive and crazy as I used to be." -David Byrne (via) The name David Byrne has been popping up in the news quite a bit lately. He was the featured artist in last month's [...]

An overwhelming 27,000 people showed up to see David Byrne play a free show at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn on Monday night. The show was the opening of the 2009 Celebrate Brooklyn concert series. Celebration was easily the theme of the night, whether you were celebrating the fact that it didn't rain, the fact that you managed to actually get inside the bandshell (many were detoured by the long, snake-like line, which purportedly began just before 11am ), or the fact that you were seeing a legendary performer for free (or the cost [...]
In many ways, this is the freshest sounding and most directly impacting album of David Byrne's exceptional (and exceptionally overlooked) solo career. Eno describes his musical arrangements here as simple but inviting, and this is the perfect way to put it. The music is also lush, clever, and intoxicating, and it clearly inspired Byrne to deliver some of his most soulful and appealing
This post is from Out the Other's 2009 Bonnaroo Artist Previews , where I'll be posting previews of all the musical acts playing the 2009 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival . Please check out and subscribe to the full site to learn more about all of this year's performers. Let’s kick off this set of previews with one of the musicians who – next to only maybe Bruce Springsteen – I’ve been listening to for the majority of my life. It’s true – I think [...]
Living Thing, the fifth album from Peter Bjorn And John, is a strong indication that the acute pop minds behind 2006 breakthrough record Writer's Block have much more to give. Despite its spare arrangements and instrumentation, Living Thing incorporates fuller melodies and more intricate sounds, ranging from dub to a sort of Merseybeat gone electro. Peter Bjorn [...]

I liked this David Byrne and Brian Eno collaboration Everything That Happens Will Happen Today way more than I thought I would. I’m not sure why I thought that considering that I’m a fan of Byrne’s work in Talking Heads and Eno’s solo work as well as Roxy Music. The songs have been described by the duo as electronic Gospel music, but I think it sounds more like adult pop than anything else. It’s an adventurous album that is radically listenable, but would you expect anything less from these two? [...]

David Byrne [photo by Joe Quint] The first show postings for the upcoming concert season at the Charlottesville Pavilion are just beginning to be released and so far the one show that has definitely caught my attention is the announcement that former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne will be performing under the big top at the east end of Charlottesville's Downtown Mall on June 10th. Tickets for the show go on sale Friday, March 27th at 10am. [a link for online ticketing can [...]
