This past weekend, Austin, TX's Fiesta Gardens hosted the fifth annual Pachanga Fest on May 11 and 12, a celebration of Latin art and culture's influence in America. Numerous genres were represented on the three stages, from rock, tejano, mariachi, cumbia, salsa, electronic, funk, hip hop, to indie, and although the origins or the artists were just as varied, all attendees were united by the appreciation of the vibrant and eclectic art. Day one started at sundown, and Peligrosa, Austin's DJ troupe, entertained between Houston's Chingo Bling, New York's Outernational , and Puerto Rico's Calle 13, [...]
Y'all remember David Cobb , don't ya? David's Houston Calling column was a staple of the Donewaiting site for a few years before it outgrew this site and spun off to it's own domain ( houstoncalling.net ). David's got the advantage of living in the same state as SXSW and while it's not exactly a short bike ride from Houston to Austin, he's still a lot closer to the mayhem than the rest of the DW staff. David has spent the last month interviewing bands appearing at SXSW that he likes [...]

[Birthday greetings go out to Rufus Wainwright today. Meanwhile, big doings all over SoCal tonight:] No Doubt's return to the road has been triumphant, from all the reviews, and it finally hits the band's native southern California tonight. Paramore is the main support band at the sold-out Gibson Amphitheatre, and although they don't seem to be listed on LiveNation sites, Sweden's the Sounds are first up — their new album "Crossing the Rubicon" is loads of fun. ... Both of the songs for today's chapter of my 1000 Minutes project were featured on soundtracks in the late nineties, and are the only exposure I've had to the artists. While that may be a poor reflection on me as a music lover, it's really more of a reflection on the amount of money I had in 1996 and 1998, when I was 17/19 – which is to say, not much at all. 45. David Garza & Fiona Apple: Loveless + David Garza: Dream Delay

Fair or not, I tend to give Davíd Garza a bit of a free pass. That's what happens when a guy writes what I'd have to consider one of my top 10 albums of the '90s. I don't hesitate to say This Euphoria (1998) belongs in every collection. ( Overdub is pretty great, too.) Problem is, Garza, who hails from Austin, has a bit of that Ryan Adams problem: He's immensely prolific ... maybe to a fault. At the very least, it's hard [...]
It's a pretty good-looking weekend of shows this time around, folks. Go out and see some bands and stuff, y'know? First, the shows we've already mentioned... Tonight, there's Delta Spirit and Na... We continue getting happy ears from some of the fab artists due to perform at SXSW 2008 next month. The second set below is slightly softer than the first, in case you want to plan accordingly. Starting out, I was based in the live music capital of the world, Austin, Texas. There is a band worth checking out every night, from the big names playing Emo's or Stubb's to the locals cutting their teeth at The Parish or Mohawk. Here are some the best that I had to pleasure to notice. Most people know Spoon and Voxtrot . They are the darlings of the Austin indie scene. Instrumental sensations Explosions in the Sky are opening for Smashing Pumpkins. Okkervil River [...]

Well, that was a busy week. What with CD release shows, SXSW official announcements, Ozzfest becoming a freefest, and Van Halen joining Crowded House and The Police on the reunion bandwagon, it finally feels like 2007 is in full gear. This week should be a piece of cake... The genius that is David Garza shall be re-explored tonight at Largo by most likely all of us who think he's one of the

Meet Agustin Lara, Mexico’s best singer/songwriter (photo left). From the romantic (yet somehow never sappy) lyrics to his tastefully frilly piano-playing to his impassioned vocals to the natty clothes, this brutha was clean. We move then from Mexico’s finest songwriter to Mexico’s finest vocalist, Jose Alfredo Jimenez. Let the listener beware: This muhfuh can emote . And what’s a Mexican mix without accordions? So we cross the border (insert joke here) to Texas’ Steve Jordan’s duet with then-wife Virginia Martinez. Over to LA for two from Los [...]

Yes, this week is all about the Austin City Limits Festival . As the week progresses, Mike will preview all 3 days of the festival and all 4 nights of the pre and post shows. Beginning Friday night, he will offer nightly recaps of the Festival and any post shows that he makes it to. He is so occupied with everything ACL, that he asked me to help out and cover everything that isn't ACL Fest related. What follows, is my best attempt at doing this. If I miss anything, please do not hesitate [...]
