A favourite who wouldn't otherwise have appeared for some time - Secret Knowledge. Secret Knowledge were Wonder Schneider (vocals) and Kris Needs (the rest). Wonder's voice and Kris' backing was a winning combination. Never moreso than on 1993's "Sugar Daddy" single, released on Weatherall's Sabres of Paradise label. Here in a Kris Needs remix form (Blue) and a superb remix by Disco Evangelists (David Holmes and Ashley Beedle). The latter is the pick of the two. Sugar Daddy would be re-released in 1996 with remixes by PvD, Liberator and others. They are [...]

Your next choice was Belfast boy David Holmes. David has been around since the early 1990s. Originally he was promoter and DJ for his Sugarsweet club in Belfast. Then, from 1994 he has been a recording artist for Warp, Soma, Go Beat (for much of his career) and Mercury. His first album was 1995's "This Film's Crap...Let's Slash The Seats" and his involvement with cinema has extended to soundtracks, to such an extend that by the 2000s he was probably better known for this work. [...]

Another sunday and another post on James Yuill , he's remixed the track "Holy Pictures" from Belfast producer David Holmes and it's turned into a sweet folktronica jam. The single is released tomorrow. David Holmes - Holy Pictures (James Yuill remix) (YSI) David Holmes - Holy Pictures (James Yuill remix) (Sharebee)
Our first remix of the day comes courtesy of "folk-tronica [whizzkid]" James Yuill . He takes David Holmes' singing on "Holy Pictures," highlights its elaborate and strained breathing, and puts the lines on repeat. Chill synth movements and subtle percussion keep the ditty moving without making it obnoxious in the least. David Holmes - "Holy Pictures (James Yuill Remix)" (Y.S.I.) More of a shoegaze sound from David on this track, as well as the whole album (The Holy Pictures (2008)) in general - for me, i'm digging it! This album as a whole is more about a journey and paying homage to David's influences and loves. Mellow vocals, warm bass sounds and 60's esque drum kits played in a local pup adron this track. What surprised me the most was David's vocals on the track, I guess I never knew he could sing and does it quite well. Be sure to check his video for his [...]
Is that a real bass tug or have the electronics progressed to the extent that traditional instruments have merely taken on the role of looking good while held by skinny chested young things? Who knows and ultimately who cares when whizzkids like David Holmes continue to peddle IDM torch bearers like ‘I Heard Wonders’. Even if his name means nothing to you it’s quite likely you’ve googled his

David Holmes - The Holy Pictures David Holmes returns with an album about his life in Belfast. (For our American friends, that's in Northern Ireland) Since the release of 'Lets get Killed' in 1997, Holmes has concentrated mostly on scoring movies. He's probably most famous for the Oceans series. Not surprisingly then that 'The Holy Pictures' has a distinct soundtrack feel. Lush atmospherics swirl around heavily distorted guitars. Standard Holmes affair apart from the fact that Holmes also contributes lead vocals. [...]

Are you familiar with Banjo or Freakout ? If not it's the alter ego of Italian Alessio Natalizia & he certainly likes the finer things: "I try to have a punk rock approach to music; I tend not not to idolize people. There are a lot of amazing musicians I love… Arthur Russell because he did everything better than anyone. Bob Dylan because he basically is god. Brian Wilson because he is Brian Wilson. The Ramones because I wish I could have been in New York [...]

The premise is a simple one; these are some tunes that I'm seriously crushing on. The Very Sexuals are Dutch indie poppers who are giving away their album for free at their website. It is really good - it might remind you of Moonbabies or Joy Zipper. Stars have a new digital EP, Sad Robots, where they continue to remind me of Prefab Sprout and Thomas Dolby. Mmmm mmmm good. Ladyhawke is all over
I've always had a soft spot for David Holmes. In fact he was one of the first leftfield artists whose discographies I explored deeply alongside people like DJ Shadow. Everything he has done has been superb. From Let's Get Killed to Bow Down to the Exit Sign ('69 Police' is still one of my favourite songs ever) to the Essential Mix compilation to The Free Association and beyond (though I have to admit I'm less familiar with his film soundtracks). His new album The Holy Pictures is inspired by [...]

Some Brazillian music given a production by NY producer Bill Laswell and given an epic techno house remix by the UK's David Holmes. All from 1992. I don't really know anything about the musicians but the All Music Guide says: "Bahia Black was a short-lived band featuring Brazilian singer, songwriter, percussionist, guitarist and vocalist Carlinhos Brown and his ten-piece drum ensemble, Olodum. Joined by American jazz musicians including Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Bernie Worrell, Henry Threadgill and producer Bill Laswell, the [...]

I had a busy weekend packing things in boxes and moving them around, then spent most of last night playing the new Wipeout Pulse on PSP which is really nice! Anyway, carrying on with the show, here are the entries for D and E. I'm not sure where I first heard David Holmes - Don't Die Just Yet , possibly on Radio 1 but I can remember the shop I bought it from (now long gone, like all the rest in Portsmouth) so maybe it was an instore recommendation. Regardless, it's a lovely [...]
