Looks like another fine week of new releases. So if you're heading to your local record store here are a few albums we suggest. I can also say Jamie Lidell , Portishead , Langhorne Slim , and the Roots are all highly recommended by SDM. If we've left anything off the list feel free to let us know in the comments section. New Releases, Album Art, and MP3's After the Jump…

David Karsten Daniels sounds like he could your Mormon cousin, twice removed. Being thrice-named, he'd also qualify for potential serial killer/presidential assassin status. He could be any normal Joe on the corner shilling hot dogs or bootlegged DVD's. But it's my job to tell you that he isn't any of those things. There is no disconnect between you and Mr. Daniels. No air of pretense or cloud of ego. There is no nail polish or eyeliner or cologne. You two are simply standing in an empty room. He holds a guitar, you hold your heart outstretched, soaking [...]

Conducted by Capt. Obvious Obvious: You just played South By Southwest. That Presbyterian church lineup sounded awesome, how was the gig? DKD: Bowerbirds played a great set as always. Mark Paulson never gets too much mention but he's doing all the heavy lifting in that band - the shimmering violin parts alongside the mega deep bass pedals on the ground most probably don't notice is being played with his feet. ...It was the first time [...]

Got that grab bag fever again. I guess you know the score by now: every Friday night here at For The Sake Of The Song - trademark of quality etc. - you´ll get a mixed bag of songs I really liked over the past week. All genres go. Old or new, slow or fast... there are no boundaries. One thing you can be sure of though: they´re all goodies, so grab ´em while you can. Tonight´s issue features a blues about astrology, the version of Hey Joe that Jimi probably based his classic performance on, while we [...]

So many wonderful discoveries were made this year that it's hard to think back to one year ago. Back then, a new Ghostface record ( More Fish ) had just come out and was among my favorites of the year. This year...right, a new Ghostface record ( The Big Doe Rehab ) has just come out, and is among my favorites of the year. I'm pretty sure I can get used to this! Now, if we can just get that Ghostface/MF Doom collaboration by next December... [...]

MP3: David Karsten Daniels - American Pastime MP3: David Karsten Daniels - Beast It is a beautiful thing when you go to a show to see someone and walk out of the venue with a new band to love. This happened to me when in Chicago many months back to see Tom Brosseau on a Fat Cat tour [...]

Summer is a great time to look back at what you've accomplished so far. From the blogger's perspective, it's a great time to assess the year in music. With that in mind, the Rock Sellout writers have decided to do a little mid-year reflection and offer up our picks for some of the best releases from the first half of 07. We're a wacky bunch, so expect the unexpected. Kip's Mid-Year Picks : Arcade Fire - Neon Bible MP3 : Arcade Fire - "No Cars Go" [...]

There's something pretty special about David Karsten Daniels ' new album Sharp Teeth , something a bit unnerving. This particular track verges on sinister, a folky strum-along ballad on the surface but a creepy tale of supernatural dealings deeper down. You're sort of put at a crossroads, forced to decide if this is a modern twist on a classic blues tale, a simple folk song with biblical references a plenty, or an uncomfortable dirge for the protagonists spiritual leanings, whichever way they might have faired in the first place. Supposedly recorded in an old farmhouse (completely [...]

David Karsten Daniels Sharp Teeth 8.3/10 A majority of our lives are spent fighting against things we have no control over. There are your typical fights against evils such as injustice, world hunger, global warming, commercial radio, etc., that with enough will and effort might actually be won. But these are nothing. The hardest fights we as humans have to face are internal. The sort of internal battles that wreak havoc on out physical state being the worst, since there is no true escape from internal conflict. But we can never bring ourselves to fight against [...]

Errr kind of in a funk this evening...Think the lack of action on the job hunt has caught up a bit...And I know something will come into play, I'm just saying it is a bit of downer. And I noticed my mom removed a picture from a frame and replaced it with one of her and her significant other on their recent trip to Hawaii...Which I understand and it pleases me that she is happy, she deserves it...It's just blue blah and I do apologize if I brought anyone down. But I tell you it felt good to sit down [...]
OK, after considerable throat-clearing, it's time for me to actually write something about next week's Troika Music Festival , held at various Durham sites on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. (Full schedule here .) But, boy, is it daunting. So much good music in such a short time -- lots of bands that I know and am fond of, quite a few that I've been meaning to pay more attention to, some that are brand new to me. If I had nothing to do for the next week, maybe I'd try to pull off a See You [...]
