by kevin diamond (banner photo by mel mccue) Ever since I was a teenager, I've been hooked on that feeling you get, creeping into the old, musty, dusty, mom-and-pop record shop, pouring over the hastily typed reviews of new albums taped up under the "Staff Picks" section, and selecting a few of them for purchase. It's like jumping into the frozen ocean without dipping your toe in first, or taking a bite of a new food you can't even pronounce. Allow me to share my results from time to time in this [...]
David Vandervelde is a multi-instrumentalist singer songwriter who has also earnt a crust as a recording engineer and producer. At age 19 he moved to Chicago and shacked up (as in lived in and shared a studio with and ate, drank and slept music: no hanky-panky) with Jay Bennett (ex-Wilco) for two years whilst both created their own solo releases. Vandervelde's debut of exhuberant classic Bolan/Bowie sounding rock, The Moonstation House Band, was released early ...
Okkervil River have started their own Youtube channel where fans can and artists can submit their own cover versions of Okkervil River songs. So far they have artists such as Bon Iver and David Vandervelde pitching in. Here are a couple videos:
Who's got two thumbs and loves Bon Iver ? THIS GUY! (OK, that's a lot funnier with the visual). Anyway, another chapter of Okkervill River's Stand-Ins Sessions is complete. First it was David Vandervelde ( who is opening for Margot & The Nuclear So & Sos! ), and now we have Bon Iver covering Blue Tulip ... If You Missed It : David Vandervelde performing [...]
In preperation for the release of Okkervil River's new album The Stand Ins , the band has been releasing a series of brand new videos of artists and friends covering the new songs off of the album, which is due on Sept 9th. Get it? STAND INS! One of the selections here, "Lost Coastlines", is quickly becoming one of my top track of "the Ocho", right along with "Singer Songwriter". Will sat down and recorded the track acoustically, with New Pornographer A.C. Newman taking the vocals of recently-Shearwatered Jonathan Meiburg. Following that, there's David Vandervelde [...]
Dusty Indiana indie-rockers Margot & the Nuclear So and So's ) and Nashville's version of David Bowie ( David Vandervelde ) will be at the Billiken Club on Wednesday, October 15. The latter's new album, Waiting For The Sunrise , came out on August 5, and features a song written by Jay Bennett (ex-Wilco). The former's major label debut, Animal! is out September 30, although an EP of a recent Daytrotter session is out now. "Quiet as a Mouse":
Sometimes, you can tell a book — or a record — by its cover. Waiting for the Sunrise, the recently released second album from David Vandervelde, pictures the singer-songwriter long-haired and bearded, looking like a young Kenny Loggins, sitting by the window of a room whose curtains and flowery bedspread likely have been unchanged since the Nixon administration. Put a cat somewhere in the foreground, staring down the photographer, and you'd almost have Carole King's Tapestry. (Gee, 2008 Vandervelde and 1971 King would have made a lovely couple, don't you think?) Sunrise's cover gives [...]

This week (or like two weeks ago) Drake ponders the future of the "Take" (say it ain't so) as well as latest releases from a Mike Mogis -less Conor Oberst and Battering Room favorites, Oxford Collapse . -ed. Drake's Take: New Releases 08.05.08 It's been a few busy weeks away from the new release racket, and lying sick in bed a couple days ago, I pondered whether it was worth even continuing on with this regular post, since it's so very time [...]

"Love is a magical mystery." Ya know, like the tour . Just when it looked like Oasis were pulling off from extracting £s of flesh from the Beatles back catalogue, they're not. The Noel-fronted, moody and swirly first cut from Dig Out Your Own Soul , "Falling Down," earned some surprised and begrudging kudos (and some unsurprised and unsurprising blog lashings), but there's little shock to "Shock The Lightning": it sounds like Oasis.

The young Nashville-via-Brooklyn-via-Chi cago-via-Michigan man has returned with a second album. David Vandervelde's debut landed him on our list of ones to watch , squarely on the back of the Bolan/Bowie revivalism of "Nothin' No." This time out it sounds like he's still enamored with the '70s, and again he's worked with ex-Wilco bro Jay Bennett. "Someone Like You"'s lyrics still sound like a young guy trying to play the part, with references to rock & roll ("what have you done"), guns, and cocaine, but the sounds are still impressively authentic, all sustained organs and warm AM golden melodies, and [...]

This is my weekly reminder to tune in to Sinking with Sylvia and Todd (and Sometimes Matt Dwyer) on Little Radio Friday from Noon to 2:00 PM PST. Tomorrow their musical guests will be Letting Up Despite Great Faults . I liked their debut record, so I'm curious to hear what they're up to. Each week, they feature an official You Set the Scene pick. Usually I use the pick to highlight a favorite older song or artist because it gives me a chance to write about something I wouldn't normally have an excuse to [...]

Waiting For The Sunrise David Vandervelde Secretly Canadian With his debut LP, The Moonstation House Band , David Vandervelde released an album chocked full of unique, colorful folk-rock soundscapes. He also exhibited his undeniable talent and versatility in songwriting and displayed his penchant for experimentation, especially in the production department. On his follow-up, Waiting For the Sunrise, he takes a sharp turn down a different road, toning down the versatility and experimentation, and trading it for a more straightforward alt-country sound. The spacey sounds of tracks like "Can't See [...]
So I was perusing the NYC concert listings in an attempt to figure out what shows I might need to start buying tickets for soon, and I noticed a great show at Mercury Lounge on Sunday, September 28th: David Vandervelde and Throw Me The Statue. This is the first date I've seen announced for Vandervelde, who will be touring in support of his new album, Waiting for the Sunrise, which is out now on
De hoes van David Vanderveldes Waiting For The Sunrise zegt het eigenlijk allemaal al. Een beetje een vergeelde foto, waarop een man met halflang sluik haar en een baard je dromerig aankijkt. Stijlvolle letters ook. Dit moet wel cheesy...

Eine kleine Rundumschau, was grad so läuft, weil irgendwie schwirren uns hier die neuen Songs und Platten nur so um die Ohren. (more...)

I'm way behind with my new release updates..... Noteworthy Records Released on 8/5/08: Records I've Heard: Darker My Love : 2 (Dangerbird) – The local band has put out an extremely likeable record that's a lot more polished than their first record. This one will draw more comparisons to Supergrass, Jesus & Mary Chain, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and (label mates) Silversun Pickups than Can or My Bloody Valentine. The band's two vocalists, Tim Presley and Rob Barbato, [...]

Fucked Up Year of the Pig (2008 Matador EP) Matador Records Over the course of a year, Fucked Up's more epic than epic, 18 minute, political, progressive punk statement, "Year of the Pig" has gone from a give 'em credit for their ambition type of song to one of the essential songs of this decade, worthy of the expanded reissue treatment provided by Matador's recent Year of the Pig EP. Here, all 18 minutes of the original "Year of the Pig" are included along with three 7" edits and four b-sides. With [...]
