David Wilcox : Eye of the Hurricane [ purchase ] Motorcycle songs often seem to come to a bad end, at least for the driver. We saw that last week in Vincent Black Lightning, and here it is again. The driver of the bike called the hurricane seeks the solitude and freedom a motorcycle can provide. The roar of the engine locks the world out, and the rider is free, if only for the duration of the ride. Perhaps this is why motorcycle riders in pop songs are usually rebels. David [...]

I was a media specialist the morning the towers began to fall: sole captain of a prep school video collection, and proprietor of the largest viewing space on campus. And so it was that the students came to me, one by one and together, by class and by cluster, as the word spread from teacher to teacher; so it was, indeed, that I ended up presiding over a grand experiment in media literacy, as the hour passed, and the cycle of not-news - that long hour of uncertain newscaster conjectures that accompanied the static, repetitive footage on every channel [...]

Dan Zanes: Wonderwheel [ purchase ] I went to a weekend fair met someone while I was there we put flowers in our hair and rode the wonderwheel... It sure sounds like a carnival, thanks to a rollicking accordion, a bouncy beat, and a subtle surfer's acoustic groove. And that's the point, for sure: after all, Dan Zanes is a master of the seemingly-casual kidsong, when in actuality, every note and tone is designed to add to the perfect festive mood, the [...]

Dylan's 70th birthday is nigh upon us, and as he seems to still be walking the earth after the predicted Rapture has come and gone, we can only assume that either he wasn't any worthier than we, or - once again - the extremists have proved themselves no more able to predict God's timing than the rest of us. Me, I'm quite proud of myself for not giving in to the temptation to release a mess of helium-filled blow-up dolls to the heavens down on main street. Instead, I spent a long [...]
David Wilcox is a brilliant song writer, a great singer, and one of the hottest guitar players from Canada. Not to be confused with the American folk musician and singer-songwriter with the same name. He first made his name as a wild showman, then across Canada as a Blues/Rock guitar wizard and onstage firecracker. Wilcox discovered Elvis at age six, started picking guitar a couple of years later, and played his first gig - to a room full of ex-convicts - at age fourteen. In the early '80s Wilcox became both a killer guitarist and [...]
David Wilcox is back and better than ever!
How one artist combines musicality with live performances.

I've been in Boston for a new literacies teacher institute for the last few days, pushing the limits of my ability to multitask and taxing my brain with theory and new possibilities; it's intense, and though I'm loving the work and the collaboration, the sustained concentration - and the all-day, full-body headache which has resulted - has left me a bit too drained to do justice to anything up to our usual standards. But last night before the pain kicked in Dad and I headed off to catch Devon Sproule and Paul [...]

Yes, it's Veterans Day, a "bank holiday", as the brits like to say; like so many other bloggers, I should be posting songs on the topic. But a recent bout of the dreaded H1N1 flu has left me late for end-of-term grading, perhaps one of the biggest sins a teacher can commit. As such, instead of taking advantage of the fine fall day outside, I find myself hunkered down over the dining room table, slowly making my way through a huge pile of previously-unseen papers and midterm exams. The post below was originally [...]
Singer-songwriter David Wilcox has a new album called Open Hand. The songs were primarily written over the last two years as he traveled around the country in an Airstream trailer with his wife and son. To record the songs he decided that - given he'd written them in the Airstream - why not record them in it? He outfitted with Airstream with studio gear and the end result is a musical travelogue

I'm committed to supporting and writing about the music of David Wilcox . At times I find his music a little too sensitive and refined. But then again his voice is a wonderful instrument, his guitar playing as good as any other singer songwriter, and his songs often a marvel of simplicity and honesty. So when something new comes up I usually get to it asap. David's new record on What Are Records? is called Open Hand . David and his band recorded it mostly live in the studio and put [...]

I've spent three days now by my father's bedside, watching as he grows slowly stronger, and learns to measure and monitor the pain of his newly reconstructed back. I've held his hand, and learned its lines anew, even as I have learned to work around the bruising from the saline feed. Each day is more tiring that I could have expected, for both of us. But no matter how exhausted I am, each night, I come home, and sit on his couch, and drink his beer, and play his records alone [...]
I'm following Uncle Sam a bit here, as I feel like relating the music that reminds me of a year, rather than just music from said year. That said.... 1991 was the year where I discovered and embraced the road trip. And I blame my friend Menasheh for this. Thank you, Menasheh! I graduated from high school in the summer of 1991. By that point, I had my own car (a 1991 Dodge Raider 2-door with the V6 engine) and wanted to spread my wings a little. So road trips [...]

David Wilcox: Chet Baker's Swan Song [ purchase ] Sheryl Crown: We Do What We Can [ purchase ] Two smooth, moody bittersweet ballads of talent lost to the ages -- one nominally folk, the other pop -- which adopt jazz trope and trumpet as a mechanism for paying tribute to beloved jazz trumpet players. David Wilcox' first person paean to Chet Baker , who struggled with drug [...]
I always thought that The Beatles would have had more of an edge if they'd written about lust , rather than love. Think of the title possibilities: "Lust Me Do" "She Lusts After You" "All You Need Is Lust" Lust is a tough nut to crack in my music collection, mainly because I never really got into the stuff where a lot of lust plays out: misogynist metal and rap. But that made the challenge even more complex, so I dove in head-first and here's [...]

Let me open with a warm thank you to Boyhowdy for inviting me to do this, and for helping to bring it to life. My name is Darius. I have been an eager reader of and listener to this blog for some time now. One day, I followed a link from here and found myself at Star Maker Machine , where I am now an occasional poster. That's where Boyhowdy found me. Life is indeed a circle. Many great folk songs found in this country were born in the British Isles, [...]
