This is a story about protecting your independence. About doing it the way you envisioned. Ultimately music is art, so it seems to fly against it's ideals when a big record label executive starts to tell you what you think your vision should actually be like. You can hear the meetings in the boardroom, " what I think Dixon is trying to say ", or " you know what Dixon needs, a haircut and some backing singers " etc. Is there anything that can kill art quicker, or that can stifle independence more forcefully, than outside forces choosing to control [...]

David's Lyre is the professional moniker of Paul Dixon from Manchester, UK. He's been releasing music for the past 18 months, but finally put out a sublime debut album, Picture Of Our Youth, in February . Vocally, he reminds me a bit of (a more palatable) Dr Robert from B low Monkeys , but the sound would fit right in with Patrick Wolf and even, at times, groups likes [...]

"We are a folk band from Vancouver". Or so reads Wake Owl's facebook page. Their bandcamp tells a different story. All songs are written and performed by Colyn Cameron, with help from a number of guest musicians. These solo projects cum bands, have been in abundance of late. King Charles, Davids Lyre, Bastille and Twin Brother all spring to mind. They're a grammatical nightmare to write about, is it he or they? Thankfully they're a pleasure to listen to. Wake Owls debut EP is "Wild Country". It's a loose hybrid between Ben Howard and the Bon Iver of [...]

In a note on his Facebook page, David’s Lyre explains why he is self-releasing his debut album (for free). The release of Picture Of Our Youth is also the end of the David’s Lyre project, but Paul Dixon (that’s the guy behind David’s Lyre) promised me he’ll be back with another project soon. Anyway, his Picture Of Our Youth is streaming below and available for pay-whatever-you-want on his Bandcamp . Some well-crafted indie pop right here.

All skittish keys and flickery vocals, David's Lyre 's new offerings suit perfectly my current favourite activity: shivering. As I rub my hands and mutter terrible curses while waiting for trains, buses, bosses and dates, so Paul Dixon's chamber-pop-rock songs embark on hesitant ascents, wide-eyed pronouncements, maudlin string-downers and sudden, spirited riffs. They feel battered and bruised by the cruelties of life, but still bursting with pluck, wonder, and a fistful of magic dust. The tunes are those expected to form the bulk of a debut album, Picture Of Our Youth , which [...]

I have varying theories on Lana Del Rey , beginning with "she's a robot" and ending with "she's obviously dead inside". My theories (which also include various assumptions about her having been manufactured out of Barbie parts and the souls of departed Disney voice-over artists in some Pitchfork worshiping indie rock hell) are supported by various media outlets; just last week ninebullets.net compared her existence to that of a McNugget (or McRib), and the good people of the Washington Post declared: Seemingly divorced from experience, or even imagination, her moody, melancholic music carries [...]

It's a shame when things don't go to plan, and perhaps equally upsetting is just how often that's the case, what with Burns night last week "the best-laid schemes o' mice an 'men gang aft agley" springs to mind... The plan on this occasion revolves around a certain David's Lyre, a band for who we've been predicting big things for quite a while, from being intrigued by their mysteriousness to including them in our Songs Of 2010 it's safe to say we were rooting for them. Given that they were essentially signed to Mercury Records, albeit via Hideout [...]

David's Lyre continues to roll forward with new track "English Roses". "English Roses" balances very well great pop hooks with a bit less pop, spacier instrumental arrangement (Think 00's British guitar music). David's Lyre - Roses David's Lyre ( Facebook ) Rating 8.1
Photography: Ann He It's kind of pop, but I'm kind of loving it nevertheless. You can find more David's Lyre over here . David's Lyre - This Time

That feeling where you're listening to a new track, and falling in love with it for the first time has to be one of the best. This track from David's Lyre immediately hit me hard, and now I can't get it off of repeat. It's perfectly polished pop that still manages to remain delicate all while lodging itself in your brain. I'm thrilled to hear his debut album, out February 20th, but for now I'll revel in this.

Before we get started, there are a few things you need to know about David's Lyre . This solo artist is in his twenties, he was born in London but currently lives in Manchester Alternative and he is not called David at all. Before starting his solo endeavor under this enigmatic moniker, Paul Dixon was in different bands, none of which involved him playing the lyre. Dixon's first demos and singles as David's Lyre attracted major label interest and some of the songs even got played on Radio 1 and 6 Music. After his critically acclaimed [...]
