We were fortunate enough to sit down and chat with Alex from one of the most exciting bands of 2012, Harriet . Check out what he had to say about branching off on his own, Jeff Tweedy and James Murphy's love child, and sleeping with your mom. 1. Tell us how Harriet came together? I had started writing all of these songs (on the upcoming EP) around the beginning of this year. I had been playing with a few other people, and had been jamming with Darren (drummer from [...]
2011: A Musical Odyssey By E. Stefen. Looking for a way to spend your Christmas cash? Get some music. Here's what I listened to the most this year: 10. Yuck – Yuck >> It's about time '90s "alt-rock" started influencing some whippersnappers. Yuck isn't breaking new ground on their self-titled debut, but they expertly mined their forefather's material for sonic nuggets to call their own. 9. Dawes – Nothing Is Wrong >> [...]
2011 was another year of musical discovery for me. Clocking in highest on the discovery meter were San Francisco's Girls ; but right up there with Girls were two bands that can't technically qualify for my best of 2011 album list: Delta Spirit and Titus Andronicus . Their latest albums - History from Below and The Monitor (respectively) - were both released in 2010, but I didn't hear them until this year. Overall, when I think of 2011, these three [...]

Live Review: Dawes at Minneapolis' Varsity Theater (12/30)
Last night's Dawes show was the first of two back-to-back appearances in Minneapolis that will also include a concert on New Year's Eve. Not even two months after their last blowout performance in the Twin Cities , this show at the Varsity Theater was, admittedly, anticlimactic. In the band's defense, it's hard to top a homecoming double-header with Blitzen Trapper, especially in a smaller venue playing with lesser-known local bands. It's possible they were saving their energy for the onset of 2012 (which, if they keep the same set list, should fall appropriately on "When My Time [...]

HT Staff's 25 Best Albums Of 2011: #20 – #16
Here at Hidden Track, compiling our end of the year list of the 25 best albums has been eerily similar to the process of devising another top 25 list - the college football top 25. When we started four years ago, we attempted to devise a quantitative methodology that systematized the rankings and took the individual biases out of the equation, while still incorporating the collective views of everyone involved at HT. Well, that was sort of our BCS. This year we're going back to the old school and running it AP Top 25 style. In other words, every writer [...]
