Dawn Kinnard possesses one of those voices that sounds like it floated out from a 1920s jazz cafe - believe us, describing it as smoky doesn't come near to doing it justice. She recently released her second album Wrong Side of the Dream and it is a surprising and engaging listen with plenty of musical left turns that stop it from ever lapsing into the predictable or formulaic. She confidently matches literate, witty lyrics to a range of musical styles from 50s girl group harmonies to white soul to blues and country and all with [...]

This year is going to it's end, so let's look back at the year we had. 2008 was a year full of great debutalbums and EP's from young (female) singer-songwriters, but also had some awesome follow-ups. As always it was very hard to come up with this list of only 25 albums, but after some intense thinking and searching sessions, this, more or less, gotta be it! I also decided to make a little favorite-EP-year-list, since I've been listening to quite some of those as well. Enjoy! [...]
Welcome to the third installment of the Sunday Spotlight. Today, you'll have a chance to meet Dawn Kinnard . Dawn grew up in Pennsylvania in a church run by her Baptist preacher father ( Tori Amos anyone?). When she turned sixteen, she became obsessed with Elvis and swore that the King was the only man for her to marry. Her original plans included attending art school. When she couldn't raise enough money to enroll, she trained to work as a hairdresser (maybe cutting Elvis doo's for Vegas preachers?). In her [...]
Dawn Kinnard is apparently the daughter of a Pennsylvanian Baptist preacher, which would probably automatically make me think she'd be better than most English folkies just by how cool it sounds. I'm not personally a fan of many Sunderland based daughters of Anglican vicars. Thankfully her music matches the coolness of her origins; it's a woozy mixture of light pysche folk with a countryish twang and enough amateurish stumble to it to make it sound fo' real rather than a quick bucks AOR cashin on the current semi-popularity of nu-folk. The two songs here are from her forthcoming debut [...]
Dawn Kinnard - Wrong Side of A Dream
"I love being around people and having fun," says Dawn Kinnard . "It's when I'm alone that the noose comes out". It's that special flirtation with the dark underbelly of melancholy -- you can imagine her crooning softly in the middle of a David Lynch film -- that the Pennsylvania singer/songwriter and preacher's daughter brings to the songs on her sophomore album Wrong Side of A Dream , finally arriving stateside July 5 after a European release last year. Kinnard's voice, a quivering purr that's like a Dusty Springfield 3am whisper in your [...]
