It starts on a Wednesday, with a faint feeling of not-rightness about the head, as if the senses were secretly, suddenly drunk. And you can't teach like this, so you check yourself out early from work, a pre-emptive strike that gives false hope Thursday morning but ultimately fails: by Thursday night the throat begins to swell and catch, shrugging itself into place like a cachet of blankets, and the body remembers: this is how it begins, and it's not going to be fun. Friday morning marks the first of 5 days of high fever [...]

Watch Dawn Landes sing with a choir of bell chimes! Performed in the historic Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights where Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Henry Ward Beecher used to "hang out." Also, don't forget Dawn's performance of "Sleigh Ride" a few years back: Continue reading VIDEO: Dawn Landes "Joy to The World" w/ a Choir of Bell Chimes! at Backseat Sandbar .

I’m still in doubt about 2012…If you'd asked me one week ago what kind of year it was in French music, I would have said “hmm”… Big names fell short, no album really stood out, no song kept ringing around in my head… But that was last week. When making this list and going through all the music, it turned out 2012 wasn’t that bad. A lot of talent stood out. So no Françoise Hardy, no Berry, No Pauline Croze, no Daphné, no Barbara Carlotti….but instead: 10 Dawn Landes - Mal Habillée [...]

A Kentucky-girl with a husky voice who fell in love with France, who learned to speak French by listening to French music and finally released a French EP. Dawn Landes ' story in a nutshell. The countryfied singer, who released two albums on France-based label Fargo, got help from (among others) Karen Lohier of Katel, Tunde from TV On The Radio and Matthew C. from Nada Surf. With the latter, she sings a pretty duet. The EP closes with a Georges Brassens cover, and features touches of doo-wop, country, jazz and Françoise Hardy-style weepers. Not all songs [...]

In 2005, Kentucky-born Dawn Landes flew to Paris and her liaison amoureuse with the French people, music and culture began. The feeling, happily, was mutual as Gallic radio and critics picked up on Landes' early recordings and her debut album picked up by a regional label. Landes toured the countryside, picking up the language and becoming enamored with the music iconic performers like Serge Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy. Landes salutes the early 60's French pop style known as Yé-Yé with Mal Habillée (Badly Dressed), a seven track [...]

Last weekend I did something a bit taboo. No, nothing that bad. What I did was this: I took my email inbox, and I cleared it. I archived everything - over 15,000 unread messages. It had just gotten a bit too out of control. Then, this week, I checked ALL my emails, filtered out what I wanted to cover, and pulled some select ones to add to my radio show. Understand this: going through sometimes up to 100 emails in an evening is very time consuming. You have [...]

photos by Amanda Hatfield Opening on keys, Meiburg's choice to begin with "Snow Leopard" about brought me out of my seat. As a guy who regularly pontificates, "Shearwater's Rook is in my Top 5 albums of all-time," it was a welcome initiation to a band I was long overdue to see live. Ten of the 18-song set was off Animal Joy. The highlight, for me, was the solo rendition of "Hail, Mary" which I previously thought of as a relatively easy going number, again, much to [...]

Dawn Landes is one of my favorite people, hands down. If she wants to cover Tom Petty, then I'm all ears. Thanks to the folks at Live & Breathing for their wonderful work.

Hem have released a holiday track from their upcoming album Departure and Farewell called "Identical Snowflakes". I'm not really a holiday music person, but I am very much a Hem person - the New York based indie rockers rank high on my list of most-favorite-bands-ever. "Identical Snowflakes" is what you'd expect a holiday track to be; sweet and lovely, but with the added bonus of Sally Green's gorgeous vocals and the band's signature harmonies. You'd have to be completely heartless not to love it. Hem - Identical Snowflakes [via [...]

On the subject of retro-pop how about this from trio Dawn Landes, Annie Nero, and Lauren Balthrop collectively The Bandana Splits . The Bandana Splits - Sometimes And a Smiths cover too. The Bandana Splits -Everyday Is Like Sunday
Dawn Landes, Annie Nero, and Lauren Balthrop cover Morrissey's 'Everyday Is Like Sunday' in their new girl group the Bandana Splits.

Apparently, it's Sam Cohen week on the ole blog. Tuesday, I posted about the former Apollo Sunshine musician's psychedelic-infused solo project Yellowbirds . Now today, we have The Bandana Splits: a doo-wop flavored girl-group project produced by Cohen. The trio of singers is comprised of Brooklynites Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero, and one of Everybody Taste's favorite folkies, Dawn Landes. Try a single serving of the fabulous debut via "Sometimes"—an irresistibly upbeat harmony and tambourine smothered gem that immediately lifts the spirits. The album, Mr. Sam Presents The Bandana Splits , is out now and you can snag your [...]
