Hem have released a holiday track from their upcoming album Departure and Farewell called "Identical Snowflakes". I'm not really a holiday music person, but I am very much a Hem person - the New York based indie rockers rank high on my list of most-favorite-bands-ever. "Identical Snowflakes" is what you'd expect a holiday track to be; sweet and lovely, but with the added bonus of Sally Green's gorgeous vocals and the band's signature harmonies. You'd have to be completely heartless not to love it. Hem - Identical Snowflakes [via [...]
Apparently, it's Sam Cohen week on the ole blog. Tuesday, I posted about the former Apollo Sunshine musician's psychedelic-infused solo project Yellowbirds . Now today, we have The Bandana Splits: a doo-wop flavored girl-group project produced by Cohen. The trio of singers is comprised of Brooklynites Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero, and one of Everybody Taste's favorite folkies, Dawn Landes. Try a single serving of the fabulous debut via "Sometimes"—an irresistibly upbeat harmony and tambourine smothered gem that immediately lifts the spirits. The album, Mr. Sam Presents The Bandana Splits , is out now and you can snag your [...]
I was a media specialist the morning the towers began to fall: sole captain of a prep school video collection, and proprietor of the largest viewing space on campus. And so it was that the students came to me, one by one and together, by class and by cluster, as the word spread from teacher to teacher; so it was, indeed, that I ended up presiding over a grand experiment in media literacy, as the hour passed, and the cycle of not-news - that long hour of uncertain newscaster conjectures that accompanied the static, repetitive footage on every channel [...]
The Bandana Splits are the doo-wop inspired singing trio of Lauren Balthrop, Annie Nero, and bowling champion Dawn Landes. In the appropriately retro video for "Sometimes" the gals play old time-y Brooklyn soda jerks who turn their shop into a concert hall after mopping up. The song comes from their self-titled debut LP produced by Sam Cohen of Apollo Sunshine. Read More...
Everybody Taste is taking a short vacation until Thursday while I visit with my newborn niece. While I'm out, here's a collection of Tom Petty covers we posted back in 2010. Tom Petty is my musical godfather—my Mr. Miyagi, Professor X, and Master Splinter. He opened the door to my musical tastes and education and, metaphorically at least, popped all my musical cherries: my first cassette tape, first CD, first concert, first used piece of vinyl, and even first song learned on the guitar ("American Girl"). To celebrate the legendary songwriter and his rich yet [...]
Sunday night's billing at Mississippi Studios was precisely the kind the venue was built for. Featuring a pair of New York-based troubadours, the lineup showcased the continuing vitality of folk and country—what Gram Parson's called "Cosmic American Music"—in an era of exploding diversity and experimentation in the pop culture arena. Brooklyn's Dawn Landes opened the set, sort of wandering on to the stage and asking if it was okay to play yet. "Nobody told me when to go," she shrugged. Appropriately, she opened her set with "Sweetheart of the Rodeo," a song [...]

Speaking of Josh Ritter, his wife and fellow singer/songwriter Dawn Landes will be stopping in Portland this weekend along with the great and underrated talent Justin Townes Earle. Catch them both at Mississippi Studios on Sunday, February 20th. The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article on the "rehab album" which included a few paragraphs on Earle and his songwriting: Though artists have certainly written good songs while in recovery, writing songs about the recovery process itself is a trickier matter. "They get very cheesy very fast. With that language you're dealing [...]

This gentle take on 'Young Folks' dispenses with the ubiquitous whistle and is much better for it, letting the lyrics some to the forefront. The track as a whole is charming, but the vocals are the real highlight. Dawn Landes , an astonishingly talented singer-songwriter, sounds like an American Laura Marling, her clear voice tinged with joy and sorrow. Whilst Landes isn't a new talent, she is one who deserves far more acclaim than she receives. Dawn Landes – Young Folks (Peter, Bjorn & John Cover)

The 78 Project: Dawn Landes (Official Teaser)
The 78 Project : Dawn Landes (Official Teaser) I don't often write about 'teasers' but I happen to know a few folks behind this project, and have heard first hand of it's awesome vision. When Alan Lomax went around the south in the 1930's recording every blues musician who'd sit for a session, they 'discovered' folks like Lead Belly , Muddy Waters and more. Now, this project takes the device he used - a straight-to-laquer, one-take record recording PRESTO and asks their musical friends to sing into a mic. [...]

Mixtape: Songs That Give You The Clap
photo by ti-rouge I made this mix for my dear friend Amy who has- as our friend Andrea put it- a clapping fetish, but it turned into something that I really enjoy listening to. As implied, the theme of this mix was clapping. When I started collecting them for the first time I really examined which tracks included actual clapping, synthesized clapping, a tight snare hit, or just a catchy beat and decided to include them all. Since not all the songs contain actual clapping, [...]

Pickathon 2011 adds Black Mountain, Grupo Fantasma, Wye Oak, and more
With an unmatched focus on environmental sustainability, Pickathon Music Festival 's only vice is some wonderful noise-pollution for neighboring Portland, Oregon. Taking place in Happy Valley, OR between August 5th and 7th, the indie-roots festival bypasses the normal list of festival regulars , to establish an eclectic family-friendly bill of banjo pickers, acoustic outfits, soul legends, and other bluegrass greats. For its 13th installment , Pickathon already tapped Mavis Staples, Bill Callahan, Lee Fields & The Expressions, plus the Fruit Bats and others, and are now completing the lineup with 11 new acts - pushing the [...]
