You will probably recognize Dawn Landes from her cover of PB&J's "Young Folks" With a nice, light, banjo line running through the song, just barely getting pushed out by the drums in the chorus, "Bodyguard" can get into your head a little bit. It's also nice to hear a singer that sounds a little different than feist for a change. Actually nevermind.. she sounds a lot like Feist, but the added [...]
(as featured on This Week's Finds , Feb. 3-9) "Power Lines" - the Interiors I can't make out what they're singing about, and the title doesn't necessarily imply a fun time, but the music is extremely good-natured, in an early Talking Heads-ish sort of way--the stuttering drumbeat, creative bass playing, swooping melody lines, and singer/guitarist Chase Duncan's amiable, wide-mouthed vocal style (sounding quite a bit like Dave Matthews doing a David Byrne imitation) all contributing to that sensation. One of the things that I think makes the rhythm [...]
You may remember, awhile back, when we posted a video and mp3 of Dawn Landes' quirky and lovely bluegrass cover of "Young Folks," featuring the WST Bluegrass Band from Austin. Now, the ...
Monday, February 4, 2008 Oh No! 19-0 didn't happen! Not to take anything away from the Giants' victory, but I think the pressure of perfection may have been too much because the Patriots played their most conservative and tight game of the entire season. It was weird to see them not confident. In any case, I hope you guys are ready for an entire offseason of analysts talking about how Eli Manning will now become the greatest quarterback of all time. Yeah! Here's an EP. Enjoy. [...]

" Bodyguard " was written following the burglary of Dawn Landes 's Brooklyn apartment. She didn't have much, just a Casio keyboard, a laptop computer and a hard drive... with her complete second album ready for production. Years of Landes' creative work were gone forever. "I never looked back or tried to recreate those songs, never played them, nothing. I just started over from scratch. I wrote 'Bodyguard' in the kitchen while waiting for the police to show up," reminisces Dawn. (more...)
From the San Luis Obispo, California indie folk-rock act Candle comes an album filled with harmonies and sentimental sadness. Miles & Miles & Miles is due out on March 22nd on the bands own label, Real Love Records . Candle began as a solo recording project by singer/songwriter KevinCoons in 2005, but over the past two years the band has grown to a solid 5 piece and has released a full length (2006's "birds were meant to fly") a 7 inch vinyl record, and played countless shows up and down the West coast. Candle will [...]

This past week we have been super busy (Becky and Paul were in town from Ireland), under the weather, and just flat out unable to find any free time -- thus the reason why we have not posted in quite a few days. However, this past Wednesday we *finally* had the opportunity to see There Will Be Blood (adapted from Upton Sinclair's novel, Oil! ) which we found to be a very beautiful yet dark film (in imagery, score, and script). One thing that was especially impressive, was being [...]
Dawn Landes, a Louisville, Kentucky native, performs a certain seductive bluegrass-inflected folk-indie style. Her second album, Fireproof, is set to be released on March 4 via Cooking Vinyl. Landes will be embarking on a month-long tour of the eastern United States starting Feb. 6. Dates are posted after the jump. "Bodyguard," posted below, is a nice [...]

Louisville, KY native Dawn Landes will break out her new record Fireproof on March 4, in the US on Cooking Vinyl. Check out the airy sounds of "Bodyguard," which droops into seemingly narcotic ramblings, as quickly as it rears its melodic head. The song was written following the burglary of Dawn's Brooklyn apartment, where her laptop with complete album number two was stolen, and lost forever. I've included Dawn's much loved, down home take on Peter Bjorn & John's hit "Young Folks." Dawn is also touring with Jason Isbell. audio: Bodyguard.mp3 [...]

Presently, Louisville, KY native Dawn Landes may be best known for her cover of "Young Folks," for which she enlisted a group of "old folks" - the WST Bluegrass Band from Austin. But that's all going to change with the unveiling of her second album and first formal US release, 'Fireproof' . 'Fireproof's' first, and perhaps most infectious track, "Bodyguard" was written following the burglary of Dawn's Brooklyn apartment. She didn't have much, just a Casio keyboard, a laptop computer and a hard [...]

Having your apartment broken into is bad enough. How could it be even worse? How about if the master (and one and only) recording of your second album got taken when the punks took your computer? Unfortunately for Dawn Landes , that very thing happened to her. "I never looked back or tried to recreate those songs, never played them, nothing. I just started over from scratch. I wrote Bodyguard in the kitchen while waiting for the police to show up." You can check out the results below. It's the [...]
The rather splendid Dawn Landes is heading out for a US tour to promote Fireproof; it's home to the track Bodyguard which, rather than describing, you can here, here . (It's the 'official' version of the track she did live on Radcliffe & Maconie a couple of weeks back.) [If you like music coming out your computer, don't forget to explore the Ride weekend ]

As regular readers of this blog will know, a small baby at home means that my gig-going these days is limited, so I usually have to choose my trips carefully and well in advance. So far though, my record of getting great shows has been pretty good. This gig however was a bit of a last-minute decision, after a friend's email reminded me on Friday. An interest in at least two of the artists and a close proximity to home led me to head over to Dalston on Sunday night to the third of Bardens Boudoir 's four [...]

A nouvelle année, nouvelle rubrique.

Young Folks [MP3] Twilight [MP3] The modern take on Folk music often brings out the protesting side of the genre. However, this is not all that Folk music has to offer. It also has a soft side that is meant to caress the old and tired men sitting at the local pub at the end of a hard day's labor. Dawn Landes dives into the roots of Folk and Bluegrass music and extracts from it this soft and caressing element, which filled the tired men with life. At the of the day [...]
Another week and another glimpse into the troubled lives of Manhattanites. Those lonely children with trust funds and broken homes. Now typically I insert a snarky comment about how bad the music on this past weeks episode was, but I can't this week. To be honest I think that Patsavas is reading my blog. Now there's no IP address, email, link, or anything else that could qualify as evidence to this fact other than, I repeat other than, the fact that the musical selection has taken a considerable turn for the better lately. Looking [...]
