Last Friday night, Dahlgren Quad was full of couples in tuxes and gowns snapping photos on their way to Dip Ball. And they were lucky that we dragged DC's own Lightfoot outside to set up shop on top of the fountain for some impromptu serenading. Led by the strong voice of singer-songwriter Jessica Louise Dye, Lightfoot pared down its numbers to a folky, earnest sound with just a couple of guitars and a trumpet-accompanied also at points by the bells from Healy's clock tower and many, many planes en route to Reagan. Take a listen to four originals as well [...]

Red C is one of those hardcore gems from the 80s that not many people know about. Formed in DC back in 1981, the band only played about 7 shows ever, and only recorded one 4 song demo (which Dischord released on their Flex Your Head compilation). Still, any early hardcore fan would dig them. The demo is only about 5 minutes in length, with the first track being an instrumental, but I've been listening to it a lot lately. Playing hardcore in the veins of Minor Threat and Government Issue, if you listen to Ceremony at all [...]

Yeah, you read that right. All Things Go and Neon Gold Records are bringing 17 year old French DJ sensation Madeon (along with the District's best, Lightwaves ) to U Hall. Not much else to say here other than watch the YouTube video that started it all if you haven't yet and buy your tickets to his DC debut now before the show sells out. This'll probably be your only chance to catch him at this intimate of a venue. Join us on May 16th at U Street Music Hall. Advance tickets [...]

From April 19th - 29th, the No Kings Collective and Popal Group will host the Water St. Project , a pop-up space along the water in Georgetown that will showcase some of the best art, culture and music that DC and beyond has to offer. On Friday, April 27th we'll be taking over the space and curating a night of fantastic music. On the decks we're bringing in Penguin Prison - who aside from being an amazing live act opening for Miike Snow the next night at the 9:30 club has some impressive DJ chops - and [...]

Every now and then we and our partners in crime at Neon Gold Records get the opportunity to bring an artist down to DC so special that it's impossible not to break our usual schedule. In February, it was Chiddy Bang. This month, it's Alex Winston . The Detroit songstress has been spending a lot the of the past year serenading the Brits overseas. Her record release party in New York last night marked her first show there in a year. Crazy, right? Well we're making sure the District gets a taste of the fun and hosting a performance [...]

by Bill Pearis DOWNLOAD : Black Tambourine - What's Your Game? (MP3) Black Tambourine at Artsphere, Washington DC (via Sammich's instagram ) Between most songs in Black Tambourine's set, Mike Schulman, Archie Moore, and (Washington City Paper staffer) Brian Nelson switched off between guitar, bass, and percussion. Singer Pam Berry, lectern in tow, stayed in the center--and because it was true to the original recordings, it was OK that her voice was a little low in the mix. Everything was [...]

I'm not sure where to begin, lots happening in DC this weekend: - Chickfactor hits Artisphere for two nights with Black Tambourine, Lorelei, Frankie Rose and more (check out this piece by City Paper) ( fb invite ) -The Windian Records Party is hitting Monserrat House with tons of great garage bands ( fb invite ) - Cobra Collective, Bellflur & Olivia Mancini also in Arlington at IOTA on Saturday night ( fb invite ) - We Fought the Big One at Marx Cafe with Screen Vinyl Image [...]
While prepping his official Spring release for "NASDAQ," Dream Cop has found the time to squeeze in a swanky new video for the single. A Blacksburg, VA resident, by way of fair DC, Dream Cop is the moniker of multi-instrumentalist Tommy Davidson. Aptly named, Dream Cop takes your garden-variety reverb-heavy dream pop and put into an apocalyptic, drum-driven echo chamber. Manipulating stop motion and live action camera work, director Lucas Borras builds the song visually with paint-splattered psychedelics, color-washed dust storms and kaleidoscopic visuals. With the unlikely tools of dynamic repetition and glitchy fragmentation, Dream Cop creates [...]

If any band embodies the All Things Gold ethos, it's French Horn Rebellion . We've seen the NYC duo - comprised of brothers Robert and David Perlick-Molinari - prove their party-starting chops with their eccentric brand of electro-pop on a number of occassions. Why we haven't had them down to DC yet, we don't know. But tonight is your chance to witness their wizardry when they open for French electronic producer Yuksek. Doors are at 8PM and tickets are still available HERE . STREAM: French Horn Rebellion - "This Moment" [...]

Got sent this excellent remix by Dublin artist/remixer LIGHTS DC for Tieranniesaur's track "In the Sargasso" . Such a smooth remix, I can hear this over and over and never get bored. Best part is he's letting us post the remix as a free download for our readers. Score one for the people. Enjoy. MP3: In The Sargasso (LIGHTS in the Attic Mix) - Tieranniesaur

Those well-versed in the ways of DC indie rock have come across Mercies at one point or another. My first experience with the band - made up of guitarist John Russell, bassist Justin Hunter Scott and drummer Ezra Finney - was at a house show in Petworth a month back, where they won me over pretty quickly with their sweat-drenched garage rock. Mercies' new EP, This Is Not About Control , captures the trio's energy in full lo-fi glory. Those of you living in the District should mark May 11th on your calendars, [...]
In case you were living under a rock this past week, you'd know that Winter Music Conference/Miami...

ATG and Neon Gold Records are kicking spring off right with the April edition of All Things Gold. Headlining the night we've got a live set from one of the biggest talents coming out of Europe right now: Yuksek . The French electronic producer has long been tearing things up in the Fifth Republic and is set to take the States by storm. The latest from Yuksek is "Off The Wall," an infectious electro-pop single off 20112s Living On The Edge Of Time which also happens to have quite an impressive video [...]

New Yorkers Fort Lean played the Neon Gold Records showcase on Friday, March 16th at Karma Lounge. They were sandwiched in between Haim and Savoir Adore on the lineup, which somehow worked out perfectly for their high-energy set. The 5-piece breezed through songs from their self-titled, self-released EP including "High Definition" and "Beach Holiday" as well as "Sunsick" - a personal favorite and recent 73 release . If you missed Fort Lean in Austin or the last time they came through DC for our New Noise series, you have the opportunity [...]

It was tough planning a line-up for the third installment of our New Noise series, especially after February's insane show with Reptar, Fort Lean and Casual Curious . This month, however, we'll be returning with a pair of co-headliners that should do just the trick. On Saturday, March 31st we'll be welcoming Body Language and ANR to the Gibson Guitars Showroom . Any of you well-versed in the ways of ATG should be no strangers to either of these bands. Miami's ANR has long been a favorite of ATG and have a proven [...]

Oberhofer is feel-good pop-rock that explodes straight through your heart down to your feet. The band's bedroom-produced sound, emotional lyrics and irresistibly catchy melodies epitomize sincerity. Frontman Brad Oberhofer has the unique ability to craft beautiful harmonies and sounds out of a raw, dissonant collection of instruments. The 21 year old Tacoma, Washington native is expected to release his debut full-length EP, Time Capsules II , on March 27th and I for one cannot wait. Ever since hearing his 2010 track, "Away FRM U," I have been an Oberhofer fan. I had the opportunity to [...]

Gracing the cover of Pearl and the Beard's excellent second album, Killing The Darlings , is a sweater made for three people. While this seems like merely a cute, simple way of pointing out that the band has three members, it is actually a completely definitive representation of the trio. Pearl And The Beard is truly a three-headed monster, with no lead singer and no head songwriter, but instead three unique personalities and people who started as strangers, then collaborated to make incredible music, and to become, as singer and drummer Jocelyn Mackenzie put [...]
