Given my penchant for the various earobic goodies that keep coming from the Silver Lake music scene, I'm always thrilled to see the live version when one of the bands happens to make the trek east. This thrill gets even more amped when it's a long-time favorite such as The Happy Hollows / MSPCE who played here last week at The Red and the Black. The Hollows, a three-piece who play rhythmic indie-pop songs punctured with jagged rock edges, had been namechecked to me countless times by bands and reviewers from that scene, and all with the same [...]
When so-called "important" bands posthumously reissue their albums, there's not always a lot to be said about them. This is usually because the band doesn't have any more to say the second time around and only further cement their place in the back pages of online music chronicles. Thankfully, the same cannot be said of Matador's reissues of the Pavement catalog, most obviously since the band has released as much new material in the 2000s as in the 90s. 95% of which sounds like it could have been created yesterday and all of which is better than anything [...]
i'll give you an idea of how good m1 platoon is. i sent this mixtape to people in an email before even posting it. meaning i didn't care that they got it from my site. i just wanted them to hear m1. and i swear to god this joint is incredible. nothing sounds like this at all. if you appreciate GOOD HIP HOP , then m1 platoon should be in your iPod, iTunes, boombox, car stereo, and every other place you can jam some music. you haven't heard about these dudes? well, they're [...]
All photos: Jane Briggs Live performances are one of the most lucid windows into someone's heart and soul. Tons of choreography, pretension and rehearsed spontaneity suggest an egomaniacal fiend. A stripped down acoustic set suggests the performer is intimately associated with his/her craft, material and audience. In the case of True Womanhood, I see their youthful naivete on display on multiple fronts. The borderline giddy exuberance with which bassist Melissa Beattie visibly anticipates each song in the set is probably the most endearing and genuine. Their overwrought theatrics of [...]

last time you saw X.O. , it was probably when he dropped the takeover 2 back in the beginning of june. the mixtape, with the wale-assisted "rid'n (remix)," had the streets and the blogs going crazy ! X.O.'s latest effort, "US vs. THEM," is like a mix between an EP and a full-length album. nine crazy tracks, with INCREDIBLE production from team demolition , best kept secret , judah , and jaguar skillz. he also recruits some solid local talent to help him out on the tracks, including benji [...]
All photos: Klea Scharberg My take: I mention something about The Rumble Strips sounding like "British indie-rock" and drummer Matthew Wheeler sticks up his nose. "I wouldn't say that", he protests. I throw a few more titles at him, but still, he shakes his head. "We are nothing." ( Ed note: NIHILISTS! ) Well, for the sake of description, genre seems almost imperative. [...]
Coming all the way from Oklahoma, Evangelicals finally made a trip back to DC. Fog machines and neon spotlights in tow- maybe the fact that we're in the month of October isn't the only reason it feels like Halloween. I noticed a Jack-O-Lantern resting on a stand behind the white-wife-beat-ed bassist. Spooky trans overlapping hard-rock guitar, echoing into each other to bring you out of your element: the vocals of Josh Jones are distinct, but fade out and bleed into synth-y trails. (Think the bastard child of MGMT and Panda Bear). The entire week before the show, I [...]
MP3: Yelle - Tristesse/Joie Yelle is France's latest international export. Dripping with pop and style and inescapably catchy music, she is everything that a pop star should be. She puts the majority of American pop to shame, like an adult telling the kids to go home and do their homework. Her densely layered, electro-infused pop is hardly the disposable kind that is churned out over modern American airwaves, which probably explains her meteoric ascent. In a scant few years, she has broken into innumerable music markets around the world. She finally [...]

New Outputmessage Mix for Flat Out!
In the coming months, there will be an influx of progressive-minded hopefuls doing their part to help make this country cool again. I've discussed this with many of my promoter/DJ friends, and they all seem to agree that this Obama pilgrimage will do wonders not only for our country, but could also really boost [...]

nonchalant - 5 o'clock in the morning [throwback].
talk about a blast from the past! after jamming that ra the mc, i had whip this out. nonchalant , y'all. another female DC lyricist, except this song is like 12 years old ('96 or so). nonchalant had the charts going wild with this joint, and while she didn't ever match that success with any other singles, she did her thing for WPGC 95.5 for a bit. i don't know what she's up to now, but i do know everybody and their grandma [...]

Where It's At: Fatback
I've often heard that there isn't enough to do in the District. Well if there is one thing that this town has an overabundance of, it's DJ nights. Thankfully, we at AON are here to help you wade through the crowds, by highlighting some of our preferred DJ night options and under the radar venues [...]

Where It's At: Jackie O and the Kids
Not all of us can have Blaqstarr do an intro on our mixtapes. Our significant others may not be a heavily blog-lauded dj/producer from the D.M.V. (DC/MD/VA). But what you have to realize is this: Artists gravitate towards other artists who share the same vision. D.C. has long been known for Dischord records and it's [...]

Flat Out! At Rock & Roll Hotel
In D.C., the term "flat out" describes folks who are, in the immortal words of Ray Davies, "dedicated followers of fashion." Flat Out! is an homage to the burgeoning new D.C. arts district and the vibrant fashion lifestyle that D.C. urban youth culture express on a daily basis. Flat Out! is also heavily [...]
