Steve Strawn, Gutshot, 2007, composed photograph. Available for purchase via the artist. What happened to Ben's Chili Bowl ? I'm a cracker and all, but it's a little weird not being the only white guy eating there. Last night it looked like a busload of The Hills extras were dropped off and told to order chili cheese fries. It was pretty funny to see a group of scrubbed Midwestern teenagers (in party dresses and popped collars, no less) asking for the autographs of the equally bewildered guys behind the counter. No [...]
Karmaloop TV was in the building with Green Lantern @ Rock the Bells. Here are a few flicks with some of the performers. SMH @ me for not going. De La Jay...Electronica Rakim

In 2004, I managed to land an internship at the Grammys. More specifically, the Seattle branch of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the professional organization responsible for the Grammys. Four or five internships later, it's still one of my top two favorites, because I felt like I was making a difference (I did a lot of research for the proof of need for the Hawaiian Music category, which was added a year later). It also changed the way I listen to hip-hop. Though the average person associates Seattle with rock 'n' roll - grunge, [...]

We sent intrepid reporter Jed Garfunkel out to the wilds of Long Island to review for us the Rock the Bells tour. Here's what he had to say: Busta Rhymes joined A Tribe Called Quest and Jay-Z joined Nas at the Rock the Bells Festival at Jones Beach last night. The show was more like a big family reunion than your typical hip hop show. Other special guests included Pharoah Monch, Talib Kweli, Slick Rick, Biz Markie, Keith Murray, and EPMD. At the end of the night I heard people over and over again exclaiming in [...]

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. Greetings from "at large"! Like any good penitent, my self-imposed blogging exile has included certain dietary restrictions. Fer instance consuming as little music released in 2008 as possible. But spending the day slopping about in music-related nostalgia is still OK, because otherwise I would have to turn to Jack Van Impe reruns or honest work. That's why this weekend, while Maura was taking in the horror what Fat Mike and/or the Get Up kids wrought , I was at the Rock The Bells tour, a package deal [...]

Today down in Columbia, MD at Merriweather Post Pavillion is the Rock the Bells tour with A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Mos Def, De La Soul, Ghostface, Immortal Technique, The Pharcyde, and Dead Prez. Basically if you like hip hop, then you should go. In DC Menya and Axios Records play the Red and the Black . Finally in Philly, the TLA has Matt Costa and Sera Cahoone while the First Unitarian Church has Tilly and The Wall and The Ruby Suns. mp3: Tilly and the Wall - Bad Education [...]

This weekend is shaping up to be a good one. The heat won't be too bad and plenty of shows are coming through the area. Friday To begin the weekend, there are some huge shows Friday night. Of course, the so called biggest band in the world, Coldplay is in Philly at the Wachovia Center. Opening is Santogold . MGMT is playing yet another sold out show at the Starlight Ballroom with Violens and [...]

I discovered yesterday that the legendary Rock the Bells tour, the always excellent looking American hiphop festival, is due to hit the UK on September 20th at the London O2 Arena (formerly the Millenium Dome, now the best arena venue in the UK by miles). Although pretty standard fare in the US now I'm sure, the lineup of the reformed A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Method Man, Redman, The Pharcyde, Mos Def, De La Soul, Raekwon, Ghostface, Dead Prez and The Cool Kids is pretty much the best hiphop lineup in the UK this side of the 80s [...]

We had some friends who recently got marooned on an overnight trip - rain, hail, wind, the whole bit. The four of em slept half the night in a greenhouse and the other half in a 2 man tent (with one headlamp). Now if there's one thing that we know, its that having the right gear can make all the difference on a trip (ask Bear Grylls or JT$ ). And if there's one other thing that we know, its that the internet is a pretty good place to shop compulsively for your stuff. If you're into [...]
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I was working on a story about J Dilla's legacy and the problems that his estate has had in enforcing copyright law. It's up and running now for you to scoff derisively at. A follow-up story talking to Dilla's family maybe in the works, so there might be more layers to this story. Sort of like a seven-year dip. Nay, exactly like a 7-layer dip. LA Weekly: Who's Biting Dilla's Beats Download: (I recognize that this is probably [...]

Game changing, son - not sure what else needs to be said about De La's 1989 debut. In a a genre where original expression is king, this album redefined rap's role in projecting cultural positivity while presenting a radical style and format change from everything released at the time (or since). Homeys also invented the now-standard hip hop skit along the way. Most notably, Prince Paul built a name for himself here by permanently upping the creativity bar for sampling (even though The Turtles later sued them and won). You might have already recognized some of the more [...]
18 today!! its a special old skool monday for me, with one of the best songs of all time, from one of the best rap albums of all time, by the best (yes, better than public enemy) rap group of all time, its de la soul!! " Eye Know " is a single from De La Soul 's landmark album 3 Feet High and Rising . It peaked at number 14 on the UK singles chart . Released during rap's Golden Age of [...]
HELLO PEOPLE! Haven't been updating this much, but luckily Waddy has! Cheers for that buddy! I thought I'd do a post with LOADS OF MUSIC, a bit of everthing for everyone - in no way is this a 'cash-in' to get our blog noticed on HypeMachine or elbo.ws at all, m'kay? Cool. First up we have [...]

This one was a surprise: The legendary De La Soul is playing Venue of Scottsdale (formerly the Cajun House) on June 20. Tickets are (gulp) $30. Get 'em here . I saw De La Soul multiple times in the group's prime (once with A Tribe Called Quest and Souls of Mischief ... unreal), and I fear a show like this could taint those memories. That's not to say the group can't still bring it, but it's definitely not 1993 anymore, Toto. Anyway, one of these weeks I'm going [...]

They appeared out of nowhere, as if they were transported from a parallel universe wherein blue-eyed soul was seen as rock & roll's salvation in the late 80s. Likeminded groups like Johnny Hates Jazz, Waterfront, Living in a Box, and Curiosity Killed the Cat all debuted and disappeared at the same time. Of the four Curiosity Killed the Cat leaned more towards the teen girl population that hung Smash Hits posters on their bedroom walls. The band's lightweight funk and photogenic looks rewarded them with mainstream acceptance in their native England but America didn't budge. [...]
