New Union Tune by By Lightning! From the ashes of De Novo Dahl is By Lightning, some similar players with an earthier feel. Though this song, "New Union Tune" knows none of that, this is just as high-energy and pop-focused as anything De Novo Dahl has done. The new disc is Sand Down The Edges . It's out, but I missed the release party and don't know where it's online yet. For now, check a few more songs out here .

The disclaimer: There's no way I could've heard everything, and I probably haven't heard some of the most popular indie stuff out there. Anyway, here are my favorites, the stuff I returned to repeatedly in 2010. I had more listed last year than this year, though I felt like I heard a bunch of stuff this year. Maybe I'm more picky. The following are what immediately came to mind, so first thought best thought. Want more? Favorite Albums of 2009 and Favorite Albums of [...]

there's no discrimination in me, i'm just the one who will be eating you ♫ De Novo Dahl - 1918 De Novo Dahl hail from Nashville, Tennessee, and were once commissioned by Warner Bros to write the theme song for that Speed Racer movie. The song was rejected by the Wachowski brothers and it's no surprise seeing that a plodding and folky soundscape like 1918 seems more at home soundtracking some sort of backcountry absurdity in a Cohen brothers film than anything else. I love the way the song builds from such a slight affair into a [...]

[The Incessant Woo-er] Concert-Goers is a series aiming to outline all the people you're bound to bump into at a concert. Admittedly, I've fallen into some of these categories. Chances are you've been guilty of being one of these people too. As much as we typically hate these people, it's just not a concert without at least one of them present. Wooooooo! Woooooooooo! Woooooooooo! Yeaaaaaah! Woooooooooo! Play it again! Woooooooo! Yeaaaaaah! Woooooooooo! Wooooooooo! 'Nuff said, right? Artist name leads to site and all songs [...]
During my high school years in rural Ohio/Kentucky, I would spend plenty of summer nights driving around on backroads (and I'm talking backroads here) with the windows of my 1988 cherry red Chevrolet S10 4.3 down, blaring some music. And since the last couple of weekends have been spent back home, I've been doing plenty of similar driving - just with a 2002 Ford Focus instead. Needless to say, I came up with a mix for my driving escapades. No stupid themes or concepts. It's getting summery out, so it just needed to be jams I could listen [...]

Three solid sessions in a row for Laundromatinee . There was Ben Sollee , then Chemic and now this one from De Novo Dahl . Keep up the good work! De Novo Dahl - Shout
...here's yet another great clip from the kids over at LaundroMatinee featuring a band that we've not seen in these parts for a while now, Nashville's De Novo Dahl . After hitting Dayton pretty regularly for most of 2006-2008, we haven't seen them in nearly a year. Guess this clip will have to suffice for now. While the band's spastic/funky power pop is great in recorded form, in the live showcase their unbridled enthusiasm and their homemade Nudie suits are off the charts. In case you missed it last year, we'd highly recommend checking out 2008's [...]

The Nashville, Tennessee-based De Novo Dahl mixes elements of surf rock, funk, brit-rock and glam into a strong bowl of power pop. It is doubtful you'll ever see De Novo Dahl at The Grand Ole Opry, but they'll sure as heck rock a dance party with the best of them. It was kind of shocking to see the band NOT fully decked out in their Vegas-style Elvis suits or their muscle man uniforms when they performed at The Pop Machine for The Laundromatinee, [...]

:: Madonna was number one on Billboard's 2008 Moneymakers list . In related news, she was number 2,068,793 on the 2008 Aging Gracefully list. :: Santogold is now Santigold . She pretends like the name change is because she's cool. Really, it's because she got sued. Sad trombone. :: The National will be heading out on a short tour in late May. :: Between the Buried and Me has posted some video tour diary footage . [...]

Originally based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Tally Hall is a five-piece band that creates infectious music, self-described by the group as fabloo. Known for their good humor and uniform of different colored ties, Tally Hall has built a strong fan base who loves their music, ideas and style all across the world. Recently, vocalist and guitarist of the group Rob Cantor , kindly collaborated with Music is Art to share in on a few questions and answers about the band. Enjoy! '08 Artists: High, Low and In Between I can't let '08 go. Not yet. Not before mentioning four bands that danced around the beacon of success, slowly peaking their heads in from time-to-time. These artists are the musical equivalent of the guide in Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, except they avoided impalement by ancient booby traps. These albums are not deep gems by any means however. They are simply records we spun hard, and forgot about. As you can see, I am on a bit of a Townes [...]

Later this month, the CMJ Music Marathon will return to the New York City for another mind-numbing extravaganza, showcasing the best of both new and old in today's music industry. Since unveiling its initial lineup in August, the annual five-day festival, scheduled to take place between October 21 and 25, has been constantly adding to the bill, offering those willing to shell out a pretty penny , an increasingly unbearable number of shows to choose from. Coheed & Cambria , who will also be busy with its Neverender activties [...]

When listening to a song and I instantly visualize myself at the concert, pushing through to the front of the crowd, beer in one hand, the other arm vigorously pumping in the air, while screaming the lyrics at the top of my lungs...this song gets added to my Fist-Pump Anthem playlist. I like my fist-pumpers southern-fried, heavy on the guitar, and smothered in awesome. Here are some of the best fist-pumpers I've heard in 08 ... so far: Please chime in with your favorite fist-pump anthems, as I'm [...]
