Gargleblast Records Back at Christmas time those nice folk over at Gargleblast Records got right into the festive spirit by giving away a series of freebies, now they've decided to do it all again under the guise of Springfest. So far they've posted up three free downloads, ' There's a Phantom Hiding in My Loft ' by Martin John Henry, ' Black Albino ' by Desert Hearts and ' It Helps to See You Hurt ' (live) by De Rosa. <p&a mp;gt;&amp ;lt;a href=" http://gargleblastrecords.band camp.com/track/theres-a-phanto m-hiding-in-my-loft"&a mp;amp;amp;amp;gt;There's a Phantom Hiding in My Loft by Martin John Henry& lt;/a& gt;</p& amp;gt; [...]

I find your lack of Valentine's cards disturbing... After the rather exciting announcement on Twitter that De Rosa have decided to get back together to record new material, I bet you you were all thinking that today really couldn't get any better. Well it can and it just did as Randolph's Leap have a wee Valentine's gift to share with you all, a little lovey-dovey song entitled ' Dying In My Sleep '. The track is taken from their forthcoming album, ' The Curse [...]

If you ever had the chance to listen to Scottish group DeRosa then you are probably just as excited as I am to hear new music from Martin John Henry , one of the group's principal songwriters before their demise. He's been working on solo stuff, and we're finally going to have a release, with The Other Half of Everything being released in the UK in October. On first listen, there' a whole lot of Malcolm Middleton , though I hate to pigeonhole the entire singer/songwriter [...]

The now departed De Rosa from Glasgow were signed to Chemical Underground and like true nationalists never softened their brogue to bailout international ears. So it took a few go’s before lyrics could be deciphered and while it’s not exactly family friendly ‘Under the Stairs (Xmas Reverie)’ turned out not as stark as I’d originally imagined. Words aside this is a really nice tune, in keeping with the season it is all softly lit and open to mistimed handclaps if you party to such admissions of jollity over the next few days. KD [...]

Yesterday was St Andrews Day. Yesterday i was too busy getting drunk to do this post. Today i'm too hungover to make a serious attempt at one and do it justice so instead i'll just post some random stuff. Some really good Scottish music of all varieties and sounds will do for a start. Some famous ones, some semi famous ones, some lesser known ones..... MP3: Frightened Rabbit - The Loneliness MP3: The Beta [...]

I must apologise for the lateness of my posts in the couple of days, it's been a busy old week and the Tea Party on Thursday night disrupted my normal schedule some what. Boy was it worth it though, if you haven't been to the Hidden Lane Cafe before I'd urge you to make the effort to hunt it down. You have no idea how nice it was to have the smell of freshly baked cakes wafting around a venue as opposed to the normal smelly BO and farts. It went so well that we plan to do another one [...]

Monday - Calamateur brought some Fresh Meat to the Peenko BBQ Tuesday - esteemed author Rodge Glass did some Community Service as he introduced as to the Year of Open Doors . Plus some Boab revived his 62-Word Review , fuck me that's 4 posts in under a year. Wednesday - the fabulous The Social Services took the time out to answer some questions for me, making them the 28th entry into the Scots Way-Hay club Thursday - the first stream [...]
Tonight, Chemikal Underground Records celebrates its 15th birthday with a gig at the ABC in Glasgow. Playing at the talent crammed gig are Lord Cut Glass, Emma Pollock, Adrian Crowley, Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat, The Unwinding Hours, Zoey Van Goey and topped off by The Phantom Band. It'd be fair comment to say that i'm pretty devastated that i can't make the gig tonight but i'll celebrate Chemikal in my own little way. Chemikal Underground came about when Scottish indie band The Delgados decided to buck against the trend. Instead of trying to get themselves signed to [...]

Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? UNION OF KNIVES (January 2010) Craig Grant (singer): [...]
I know I said there would be no more Friday Freebies this year, well to get round this I have gone with Festive Freebies as to be honest there are far too many cracking tracks out there that I had to share them. Kid Canaveral Having stalked the Canaverals for over a year now, it would be fair to say that I am just ever so slightly excited about their forthcoming album. After listening to their new song 'Good Morning', which they are giving away as a wee taster of what's to come, I [...]
Phew, it's the last day of this, so I don't have to keep digging for more songs. Got any suggestions for anything else I can do to force me to make a post every day? There probably won't be anything too exciting posted here over the next day or two, so don't feel bad if you don't visit. Today's Christmas song is a last minute entry from The Cinematics. They had a new album out a couple of months ago. I wasn't in love with it, but it's not bad. The Cinematics - Japanese [...]
It's be en about six months or so since the demise of De Rosa, a sad loss to the Scottish music scene, thankfully though we have not seen the last of them. Lead singer Martin John Henry has gone solo and is currently demoing new material which should hopefully see the light of day some time in 2010. I caught up with (stalked) Martin at one of his recent gigs and he very kindly took the time out to answer some questions for me, here's the results.... It's been [...]

There has been a surge in the popularity of Scottish bands singing in their native accent, De Rosa not only did this, but they took it one step further, singing about the history of their where they grew up and how it effected the world around them. Essentially a modern folk album,' Prevention' touched upon taboo subjects such as domestic abuse and drink driving, crafting them into some of the most beautiful songs t0 have ever emerged from this wee country. De Rosa were my holiday romance of 2009, no sooner had I fallen in love then they where [...]

pop monday. david lamoureux feels chatty: this little big adventure ep showed up in the inbox recently, and it's really good, definitely worth more than one listen; kamera is almost paradigmatically radio rock disposable, but it's monday, so whatever, dispose; de rosa is one of these scottish bands that probably have a great record in them down the line a way, entretemps, this one is catchy as a cold; finally, million young's blissy little number - if you missed your coffee or slug of vodka or whatever this morning and you need something to tide you over until you [...]
I have been sitting with these songs ready to post for quite a while now, I was holding out for an appropriate story or the like to attach them to, alas that time has never come round so I have decided to just post them up on their own. A massive thanks goes out to Alan for sharing these tracks, without him this post would be nothing, nothing I tell you... De Rosa - The Engineer De Rosa - Arc

Sunday nights, for me the worst night of the week, that impending feeling of doom at the thought of having to go into work the next day can be a real killer. Sunday the 27 th of September will be different though, as Martin John Henry , Lord Cut-Glass and Rick Redbeard (the Phantom Band) are playing a free gig at Bar Gandolfi as part of the Merchant City [...]
