The mailbox flooding continues and the past few days I've been busy reading, deleting, downloading, deleting, listening and deleting. As always I have probably listened to 10 songs for every decent one I have found. So to be able to post these 8 songs I have listened to at least? Oh well, you do the math. Have a rather busy day ahead of me, so I'm afraid that the music will have to speak for itself today. + The Memories Attack - Peaks & Valleys + [...]

I've sorted some things out around here and am in the process of sorting out some other things. Both of which are to say that there should be more time allotted in the near future for me to concentrate harder on things here at 24HPP. For today download these and distract yourself accordingly.

For those of us fortunate enough to be acquainted with De Rosa's 2006 debut Mend , the wait for album number two has been arduous and seemingly interminable; thirty months is a long time by anyone's standards but given their lead singer's aspirations, it was unlikely that the album was going to be rushed. Finally complete and packaged with original artwork by Glasgow's literary titan Alasdair Gray, Prevention builds on the promise of their debut and goes some way towards establishing De Rosa as one of the most accomplished and (dare we say it) cerebral [...]
Another week, another mix with lots of new music ranging from electro-pop to country. If you are still partying from the events earlier in the week or are just ready for a great weekend, this music will get you through. Enjoy. Asobi Seksu - Familiar Light De Rosa - Nocturne For An Absentee We Swim You Jump - Sparks Fade Out Brandtson - Earthquakes and Sharks The Whitest Boy Alive - Island Favours For Sailors - I Dreamt That I Dreamt That [...]
I didn't know anything about De Rosa before reading the Matador Records year-end blog entry in which anybody/everybody associated with Matador weighed in on their favorites of 2008. Maybe an eighth of the way down the page, Barry Burns of Mogwai listed his number 1 of 2008 as: "Promo of Scottish band De Rosa 's new album called Prevention on Chemikal Underground Records. If I like it, it's bound to sell literally hundreds, of downloads." A Scottish band on a label which never [...]

For those of you who missed it, Toad favourite Samantha Crain has been making telling us about the progress on her new album, over on this thread about Arizona . She has this excellent news to deliver: We've finished our full length album "songs in the night" and right now it's gettin' all nice and pretty (mastered, artwork, pressed, etc)…the official release date for it will be April 28th but i'm sure we'll be getting to a copy to review before then. Bloody marvellous is all I have [...]

Sauchiehall Street is the best street in Glasgow, if not the planet. At number 490 is legendary dancing den The Garage , where every student in the city has spent their nights and much of their loans not knowing when to call it a day. Stumble a few doors down to 482 and you'll find post-club Chinese grub at The Noodle Bar and a plethora of guilty pleasures (you can't go wrong with the Szechuan chicken). At 468 is Capitol : part bar, part gig location but, more [...]

I have not posted a mix since July last year, can you believe it? I barely could, even though procrastination is something I am quite skilled at. That is not a good thing, but better late than never. Enjoy the free songs, you slackers. You should try something more productive, like playing chess on a logride. You've probably never even thought about trying that, you were busy slacking so much. British Sea Power - Waving Flags - (MP3, 5.7 MB) This is a damned good song by a band I'd written [...]
Two posts coming along today, and then I'm off with Mrs Villain for a few days break. Got along to my first gig of 2007 last night. We're lucky in Glasgow that the month of January is brightened up with an annual Celtic Connections festival. Its not all woolly jumpers, beards and folk music (not that there's anything wrong with any of the above mentioned) , and I usually manage along to a few
The long weekend was good but tiring and thanks to Michelle, yesterday's update of Boy Omega was really nice. I received a copy of the brand new Blowoff CD at my office today so searching new music was out of the question. When I got home from work I cranked up the stereo for a bit, then pretty much did a "spin the globe and stop it with a finger" music blog search. This

The Hourly Radio / History Will Never Hold Me ( Kirtland ) The British influence on Dallas' Hourly Radio is obvious, but what's curious is the particular point in the timestream that they've elected minep. They hearken back to the late '90s/early'00s, after Britpop had disappeared up its own nostrils but before Coldplay and Franz Ferdinand ushered in the wimp-rock and new 4 wave movements that still reign today. The advantage of this is that though offering a sound that's familiar [...]

I got this Chemikal Underground compilation the other day that was lined up with some decent bands from that label. It had tracks from Interpol, Mogwai, etc... and this new band I haven't heard of called De Rosa. I didn't really feel pulled towards the song featured on the comp., but perhaps it was being overshadowed by the bigger names. That is... until I discovered I had also received De Rosa's full LP (Mends) in the same package. I gave it a listen and fell head over heels for the track New Lanark. Their sound does pull from the Glasgow [...]

Yes, it is true, if they come from Scotland then I will listen. That is the case for Glasgow's De Rosa . De Rosa produce indie pop drawing more from American indie bands (Pixies, Sonic Youth, Pavement) than the jangly predecessors of their homeland. This turns out to be a path that is sometimes well trodden but always welcome. Inside, there are moments of native homeland folk flourishes (Cathkin Braes, Hattonrigg Pit Disaster) to offset the aforementioned sparkling pop/rock energy that dominates this their debut LP. "Mend" (Chemikal Underground) has been out for two months now, don't you think [...]
