If the name Brent Green and the Wex sound familiar in the same sentence , it's because you probably followed my advice and went to see "Gravity Was Everywhere Back Then" last August. This charmingly awkward and ominously tragic film is based on the life of Leonard Wood, a Louisville hardware store clerk who renovates his house into what he believes to be a "healing machine" to keep his terminally ill wife alive. It is Green's first venture into the full-length feature world (an impressive one at that) AND he built a full-sized replica of this [...]

Saturday night's lineup at Buster's had things flipped around a little bit, in my humble opinion. The highlight of my night was the first act which was Louisville's (formerly) very own Papa M . For those not aware of the significance or depth of Papa M's career, then allow me to lay it out real quick. Throughout the late 80s and early 90s the music scene in Louisville was one of the most progressive, important, and underrated scenes in recent music history. You might not be aware of how much of the music [...]

Mat at Leo just turned us on to some pretty interesting news. Dead Child 's "Sweet Chariot" is up for Video of the Year at MTV's Headbanger's Ball Best of 2008 (I watched this way too much growing up). The best metal videos of the year, as voted by viewers, will be played on the last episode of Headbanger's Ball for the year airing December 20th, 2008 from 2am-3am EST.

Back when dogs ran free, I tried to hip you to Dead Child and their snazzy debut, Attack. But, of course, no one ever listens to me unless I'm slagging something, which fortunately, is pretty much ongoing. Anyway, since it is technically Halloween weekend still, I figured it was as good a time as any to give you a taste (make that 2 tastes) of David Pajo's latest foray(s) in the macabre. Insert Vincent Price cackle here. First, to help us get into the [...]

Dead Child is playing a warm-up show at Lisa's TONIGHT, 7/30, to get them ready for their west coast tour. Human and Dirty J will also be playing and admission is just 5 bucks. You can also catch them at the end of the tour when they play at Skull Alley (a fantastic all-ages venue) on August 21st. Dead Child- Screaming Skull (from Attack )

By FLANNERY CASHILL Dead Child combine chugging hardcore with heavy metal wails for the ultimate in dude rock. This should be a good one. See some of our pics from their show at Cahoot's earlier this month. Dead Child- Screaming Skull (from Attack released this month)
" You think they'll get this one? Think they'll get it? A little clue: check you calendar. Check your calendar on this one. Check your calendar, and then maybe you'll get the joke." - Tom, dropping some hints about his timely spin of "Taxman" "Oh, there's many more things I've done, but, you know, I figured I'd start with that." -- Leon Carbone, purging the guilt about a $20 paper route theft "Not even gonna say what it's a stain of, just trust me. It was gross." -- Tom, declining [...]

Today I had my first foray into the world of commercial real estate. I was scouting locations for a new laundromat. It wasn't something I up-and-volunteered for (okay, I guess it was), but I received two free meals for my dedication to the project, and got to visit Palm Springs, which I've dreamed of visiting ever since Bugs Bunny took a vacation there at the end of Daffy Duck's Quackbusters . The plan was simple. Wake up early, head east on Interstate-10 and stop at five or six potential properties that could potentially [...]

Since I neglected to write of my weekly world news entries on Saturday, here is a belated update. If you're not interested in my reactions to headlines from around the globe, you can skip this entry and move on to the next one. Or, might I suggest making a donation to this website (see that "DONATE" button at the top-left corner of the page?) with the time you would have spent reading my drivel? Your taxes are due at midnight, and if you haven't finished your return yet, maybe you can somehow write-off your donation! Or, if you feel like [...]

Any Cleveland metalheads out there? Back in the '80s and early '90s there were a couple of clubs on the West Side (Shadows, The "Real" Flash Gordon's) where you'd likely hear live metal 7 nights a week- and I'm talking all sorts of different metal, from the poofy-haired spandex variety to blue jeans-and-leather-pants thrash. Something about Dead Child 's debut, Attack (Quarterstick Records), reminds me a lot of those days and those clubs and reading import copies of Kerrang and Aardshock that I'd occasionally find at Chris's Warped Records or Shattered or My Generation. Three [...]
DOWNLOAD: "Sweet Chariot" from Dead Child's Attack Though he's played in indie rock bands far removed from the metal scene (Slint, Tortoise, Stereolab, Royal Trux) and served time in Billy Corgan's short-lived post-Smashing Pumpkins band Zwan, guitarist David Pajo is really just a shredder at heart. During the Slint reunion tour in 2005, Pajo, Michael McMahan, and Todd Cook started talking about putting together a metal band that paid homage to the bands they grew up listening to (Maiden, Priest, Motorhead) [...]

Dodge, for the most part, is a reasonable guy who has been extremely tolerant of my journalistic transgressions. So, how do I thank him? By hyping an offensively-named metal quintet, of course. But here's the rub: the band in question is from Louisville, and given the man's home state pride, that's basically a Get Out of Jail Free card for me. And so, thanks to moral dilemmas, let me tell you about Attack , the debut Touch & Go/Quarterstick release from Dead Child . Metal on [...]

Welcome friends, to another new genre....yes indeed, after Tape-Loop, Gameboy Core, Dub Step and Crisp Packet Shuffle I introduce to you... The New Wave of Kentucky Heavy Metal ! A supergroup of sorts, Dead Child features Dave Pajo (whose numerous projects have included Slint, Papa M, Ariel M, Zwan and The For Carnation), Todd Cook of The Shipping News and the reformed Slint, Michael McMahan (brother of Slint's Brian) of The For Carnation, Tony Bailey (Lords) and Dahm of Phantom Family Halo on vocals. After the Slint reunion tour in 2005, it seems Pajo and co began to [...]

Q: Are you ready for the NWOKYHM?? That's the New Wave Of Kentucky Heavy Metal. Dead Child is going to release their debut album Attack on April 8th. Now, Dead Child is metal with some artrock/posthardcore elements thrown in. This makes sense as they have an "indie" pedigree. They were formed by David Pajo of Slint . Listen: "Sweet Chariot" (box.net mp3) Myspace page is here . Touch & Go is here . Vicious 'single file' @ ptw is here . Old GT post [...]
Dead Child Genre: Metal / Thrash / Rock From: Louisville, Kentucky United States Metal is one of those genres that has never appealed to me. Rightly or wrongly I associate the genre with overly macho posturing, sexist portrayal of women and an unbearable over reliance on bludgening guitar histrionics over lyrical intelligence just leave me cold.
