I am safely on the east coast and have sporadic internet access, but I wanted to say hi and give a fond farewell to California. As I get more settled I will try and post more often, I'm way behind on searching for new covers for the collection as well so if you find something amazing send it my way! Guster "California Dreamin' " (The Mamas and The Papas Cover) Mates of State "California" (Phantom Planet Cover) The Delgados "California Über [...]
Who doesn't love moving into a new place and having some unforeseen problems there (*cough* look at the fourth song posted *cough*)? An ode out to everyone doing the move thing, such as myself and Sasha (who as many of you probably have noticed by the punk rock assault, hasn't posted on here in quite some time due to her computer being all packed away). Good luck to everyone else moving! Mp3: Dead Kennedys – [...]

Good tidings on this first Friday of June, Internet travelers. Is the weather nice where you live? Has that neighborhood swimming pool opened yet? Can you hear the sweet, lilting song of the ice cream truck as is barrels down your street at break-neck speeds, barely escaping a collision with the doughy face of a six-year-old who "just wanted a Spiderman Popsicle"? Are the birds and bees graciously eating one another's assholes, or doing whatever it is they do to give us that birds-and-bees expression? I'll tell you one thing that's not happening: I'm not going to see [...]
Legendary singer of the Dead Kennedys and head honcho of the highly-influentual punk label Alternative Tentacles , Jello Biafra, has no plans on fading away soon. The outspoken, controversial Biafra has been active as a spoken word artist for quite some time and also performing as Jello Biafra and The Melvins, or just Jelvins. On his 50th, Alternative Tentacles celebrates with a show showcasing Jello's new band, reunited skate-punk legends Drunk Injuns, and latest crop of exciting bands such as Akimbo, and Triclops!. The newly hatched Biafra band (as yet unnamed) is Ralph Spight (Victims Family, Freak [...]
Walls and bridges have a symbiotic relationship - one separates people, the other connects. Whether the Great Wall Of China or the walls of a cellblock, their use keeps humans divided from each other. Bridges span obstacles, sometimes they're as simple as a log fallen across a stream, other times as complex as the 12,828 foot Akashi Kaikyo Bridge suspension bridge in Japan. Between November 9, 1989 and August 13, 1961, the Berlin Wall separated West Berlin from East Berlin and East Germany. [...]

Holiday In Cambodia - Dead Kennedys Okay, last week I asked if there was anything more stupid than the recent spat about Obama's "bitter" comments. In the last several days, that question has been answered. By far the silliest thing yet to happen in this neverending primary season are the gas tax "holiday" proposals from McCain and Hillary. Beyond just the absurdity of the proposals themselves, there is the very terrifying thought that such pandering actually could prove effective. I find it hard to believe that people could be bamboozeled by something [...]
Maybe this is a bit parochial (and non-musical) but all the signs suggest that the largest share of Londoners who actually voted for their mayor did so for an upper class homophobic racist. Apart from making the must-be-soon celebration of Thatcher's death in Trafalgar Square much more interesting than it would have been under [...]

There was a (belated) Earth Day festival on campus yesterday. As per the usual protocols for these types of events, the organizers set up a sound stage in the courtyard between the student center and science building. While mostly used to broadcast repeat plays of a Best of Bob Marley CD (because no matter how mainstream ecological awareness has become, it is vital to stress its hemp-shirt-and-Birkenstocks roots), it did host at least one live musical performance, and I caught a couple minutes of their set during one of my trips to the vending machines in an adjacent [...]

A friend of mine is suffering from an appalling time trying to find a job, and it's hard to offer sympathy in that kind of situation, but I have been through this before, so I do have some idea. It took me almost a year to get my first job in what I trained [...]

The Easter Bunny scars a child for life, Mayne Island, 24 March 2008 Don't let the title of this post scare you, Dearest Friends, we're all safe and sound. We had a lovely time on Mayne, all in all. Though there were some suffering children. The weather was magnificently fickle; frequent bouts of lashing wind and cascading hail interspersed with lengthy stretches of gentle sunshine sufficient to allow for refreshing walks in forest and along shore. I also managed to steal an hour to myself, which I spent sitting by the water [...]
Having another one of those punk days where all I wanna do is listen to some very loud, very fast hardcore punk. Them were the days, pogoing 'til you were sick, and it wasn't a good gig unless you got a black eye, a nosebleed or some broken bones, sigh!!. In about '80 or '81 I was lucky enough to see the Dead Kennedys in London, wot a gig that was! My only regret was never seeing Black Flag. So, in memory of those I saw and those I didn't..... Dead Kennedys - California Über Alles [...]

A snapshot of the cultural sensitivities of Nixonian America, as represented by two advertisements for model cars which appeared in DC comic books during that period: Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Tijuana Taxi (from Going Places , 1965) - HONK HONK! Happy hour at the Eden Roc's lounge: One-piece molded plastic chairs and the curved Formica surface of the well-stocked bar. The clientele sporting sharkskin suits and Brylcreem-lacquered "smart look" 'dos or pastel "Jackie O" ensembles and sky-high [...]

The view from the bar, courtesy of beatnikside Our first night in Vegas did not begin auspiciously. Dearest T started off the evening with some unimpressive martinis at one of he countless bars in the vast, glitzy bowels of Caesar's Palace. The barman, a smarmy cornfed boy with a monosyllabic name like Chip or Brett, had served them up with a nudge-nudge, wink-wink request to let him know if there was anything --ANYTHING-- else at all he could get for us. We didn't take him up on his [...]

Looking thorugh the John Peel-related posts on the BBC's website , particularly relating to the Festive Fifties, it's kinda interesting to see what gets thrown up, in terms of the bands you rediscover, never heard, or are surprised to see in there. It's good to see stuff that comes round again...or should. Today's post is actually quite heavy on 1993, a time when I listened to John Peel's show pretty regularly, taping it (no podcasts then!) and trying to stay awake until 2AM on Friday and Saturday nights, something that I didn't manage very often. It's also interesting to [...]
I usually try to keep my politics out of my music blogging, but sometimes the Venn Diagram crossover is too vast to escape. As a primary season junkie, and a continually disagreeing but surprisingly continual National Review Online reader, I can't help but have come across tons of mentions of pudgy provocateur Jonah Goldberg's new book Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, From Mussolini to the Politics of Meaning . At least half the country noticed as well, currently thrusting Mssr. Goldberg into the # 8 position on the Amazon [...]
