[Random observations on a Tuesday afternoon ...] Ozzy Osbourne , who will be honored Sept. 10 at the House of Blues as the kickoff to the Sunset Strip Music Festival , has been added to the bill to perform the final set on the festival's outdoor stage on Sunset Boulevard on Saturday, Sept. 12. Korn, Pepper, Kottonmouth Kings and Shiny Toy Guns are among the 40-plus bands playing in a lineup that nods to the Strip's rawk heritage. A snarky person might note that, with the event [...]
What would you expect hear when you listen to a song titled "My Body's A Zombie For You"? The grunt of a heavy-metal band or the whine of an emo cry baby? Luckily, you get neither. Instead you get the '50s sound of Dead Man's Bones: Zach Shields and Ryan Gosling (yeah, the Oscar-nominated actor). [...]

There's something about great actors who long to be rock stars that sits about as three-day-old bread. Ryan Gosling is one of the most gifted actors of his generation. He's rarely given a forgettable onscreen performance, and displays an appreciation for subtlety that often makes us wonder how someone so young can make such a storied art look as easy. So, why then could the 28-year-old Canada native pull a Scarlett Johansson and try to give us a reason to loathe him? I've recently come across a video so bad it makes anything [...]
Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields are set to bring their band Dead Man's Bones on its very first tour this coming October. Pitchfork reports "The actor/musician duo will bring the songs from their band's self-title debut album to life with the help of a local choir in each of the twelve spots they're hitting. Their album was recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir but they can't bring all those kids on the road with them. Hence, a new group in every city." The opening act for the shows will be a talent show that will be organized by the [...]

Can actors sing? That's probably the question raised most after the famous 'chicken or egg first?' doubt. He may not be able to hit those high notes, but Ryan Gosling definitely has a couple tricks up his sleeves. You may recognise him from ' The Notebook ', ' Half Nelson ', ' Lars and the Real Girl ' or as early back as ' Breaker High ', being an actor with credibility now he adds the band Dead Man's Bones to that long impressive list. With old friend Zach Shields, the band creates an original sound [...]

Pamiętacie jak pisałam o folkowo-upiornym projekcie Ryana Goslinga? Tym razem nie nawiedzony dom, lecz cmentarz. Podobno ku-klux klanowe, dla mnie bardziej w klimacie prozy Trumana Capote i Harper Lee. Alabama, baybe. Syl.

This week is an ominous black cloud, menacingly hovering above Citizen Dick headquarters. Three of our five writers are educational professionals, meaning that in five short, fun-filled days our carefree summertime existence comes to a screeching halt. Our three month hiatus from all things work-related has been a great ride, as it is every year. We've been able to provide quite a bit of excellent coverage all Summer, and while we certainly hope to continue in the same mode, we know that our time is going to be more limited. Weeknight concerts become more difficult to attend, boozing nights become [...]
Another bunch of cracking tunes, both brand new and a couple of recent discoveries.Volcano Choir's album Unmap is due next month, and is the eagerly anticipated side project of Justin Vernon, aka Bon Iver and friends. The first song has been made available for download, and although it has the echoes of his solo work, some hushed tones and backwoods gospel, there is also something new in the

I'm probably going to look back at this post and think I should have just taken the day off. too late. I use to write 57. People would ask, "whats 57?" and I could never say. I would reason up all sorts of things, and in reality I didn't even like the numbers. It just came together and I didn't really realize within the situation what the reason was. I never did come up with a good explanation, but I liked the way the two things came together; arbitrary and cohesive with good possibilities, to me of course. [...]
Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields directed their new Dead Man's Bones video for "Name In Stone". They sing a dark and spooky tune alongside the LA Inner City Mass Choir and the Silverlake Conservatory Choir. Shot in one take on 2 rolls of 8mm film, the above video does the band name justice as they are in a graveyard. Everything is very literal.

Normally not one to jump all over an actor's music side project, there's something about Ryan Gosling's band that has me very intrigued. It started with their video in a graveyard and my description of their sounds as "goth folk doo-wap." Certainly not something you hear ever day. They just released their first track called "My Body's A Zombie For You" and the full length album will be released on October 6th via Anti Records . Dead Man's Bones - My Body's A Zombie For You

Actors turned musicians are nothing new, but it seems lately that the caliber of thespians laying down tracks has increased. From Zooey Deschanel's M. Ward collaboration She and Him to Scarlett Johansson's debatable Tom Waits cover album, some fairly respected actors are making their way into the indie world as musicians. Some of the latest to do as much are Ryan Gosling and Zach Sheilds, who have decided to join forces as Dead Man's Bones and cite their influences as Disney's Haunted Mansion and doo wop, [...]

Pitchfork is like the Saruman of music blogs / web reportage. The smug Chicago writers have the all-seeing eye when it comes to new tracks and videos. What inconsiderate pricks they are frequently robbing me and countless others of some semblance of originality by posting a song before almost everyone else on a regular basis so it looks like we're all feeding on the drip of their mp3 folder. In the case of Dead Man's Bones I can't claim to be the first with it. Not even the first Irish blog to [...]

Dead Man's Bones —a band comprised of actors Ryan Gosling ( Lars And The Real Girl , The Notebook ) and Zach Shields with appearances by the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir—will release their debut album on Anti Records October 6th. The record's first single, "My Body's a Zombie For You," is an uplifting doo-wop and gospel-inspired tune that combines the far-reaching choruses and emotional punch of the Arcade Fire with the dark and comical subject of the undead—used in a metaphor here that's as bizarre as it is delightfully original. Dead [...]
The Big Pink released their new video for their standout track Dominos MP3 : The Big Pink - Dominos ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------- Bradford Cox/Deerhunter , as his side project Atlas Sound, covered Fleetwood Mac's Walk A Thin Line and posted it on his blog today... My favorite song of the day (so far) (OK I know it's early): Dead Man's Bones' "My Body's A Zombie For You," in which Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields lead the Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir in an eerie ode to someone who inspires so much love, s/he causes the other person to go all undead-like in the head. I've been listening to a bit of AM oldies radio lately, and "Zombie" sounds like it would fit right in, at least during the "Songs From A Possibly Alternate Dimension" hour. Dead Man's Bones' album comes out Oct. 6; the [...]
