I like Catherine Feeny! The Portland songwriter (a veteran of the Hotel Cafe tour, though you'd never know it from her other band, Come Gather Round Us ), is about as friendly, awesome and D.I.Y. singer-songwriter as you're likely to find in Portland (which is saying a lot). She played one of our Portland Makes Music showcases, and it just couldn't have gone more smoothly. I'm not a huge fan of this particular song of hers, truth be told. Her People in the Hole EP has some really great tunes [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News On Aug. 9, Grateful Dead fans around the world will celebrate/mourn the 15th anniversary of guitarist/vocalist Jerry Garcia 's passing. For their part, the San Francisco Giants are honoring the jam king with "Jerry Garcia Tribute Night," which will feature a rendition of the 'Star Spangled Banner' by the Dead rhythm guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Mickey Hart during the seventh inning stretch. Those hoping for Hart to perform a 25-minute 'Drums/Space,' [...]

According to English newspapers, Cheryl Cole has allegedly been moved to a specialized hospital for the treatment of malaria that she has, also allegedly, contracted while on vacation in Tanzania. When we were in Madagascar we were told that if the symptoms did not subside after 1 day of treatment then the vital organs are in big trouble, which, as bad as it sounds, would mean that Cheryl Cole's second album that was supposed to be released sometime is August will be postponed. Sad news for the pop world, both on the charts and on the popstrel's life. Anyway, [...]

morning peoples! as you can tell, or maybe you couldnt, i took a bit of a hiatus over the past couple weeks. the reason? really i had no reason, just felt like stepping away for a bit. sometimes the internets just gets to be too much and i get fed up with it. im sure im not the only one who occasionally feels as such. plus, i really havent been too inspired as of late. not that my lack of inspiration has changed much, but i feel like a couple weeks is a long enough break. i [...]

can think of a few off the top of my head that don't get updated anymore but what exactly happens to those blogs after their writers move on to other things.... do they even die at all? pop your favourite 'dead' blogs below or note where those bloggers have now gone. Ubbs

For a guy who was not all that long ago described as “semi-retired,” Bill Kreutzmann seems to be everywhere these days. No sooner did his BK3 trio peter out than a new band with Papa Mali, 7 Walkers – a fierce little unit spawned from a place where psychedelic Dead meets the spiciest, unruliest New Orleans funk and R&B – came to the fore. [Photos by Andy Hill] And wouldn’t you know it, neither unit will be Kreutzmann’s main focus this summer. That’d be [...]
Roy Jay is like that super cool family friend that always urged your Dad to let you off the hook when you did something wrong. He’s laidback, but on a path, and comes off as a lover of people, experience, and life. I like an artist with his stage personality; a style that breaks the [...]

Barely 24 hours before they were set to kick off the Northeast leg of their summer tour, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh's latest project, Furthur , has been forced to cancel their July 5 show at the Shelburne Museum, in Shelburne, VT due to concerns from local authorities about surrounding ticketless fans and heavy traffic. The Catamount State and the Dead have had previous history, as back in 1995, thousands of ticketless fans crashed the gates at the band's June 15 gig at Franklin County Field in Highgate, VT. [...]

As much of the HT staff takes to the road this weekend for some of Phish's Northeast run, thought we'd dedicate this week's Mix Tape to the art of the road trip. We've got six tunes dedicated to getting out and hitting the open road and exploring this great country, so we hope these inspire you to jump in the car, roll the windows down and take a road trip of your own... We kick things off with Ben Gibbard & Jay Farrar with California Zephyr from their [...]

With all the hub-bub surrounding Phil Lesh and Bob Weir's latest project Furthur , it would seem easy to overlook that fact that two of their former band mates - Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann - will also be out on the road this summer playing the music of the Grateful Dead. The duo has revived their Rhythm Devils moniker and will be joined by Sikiru Adepoju (talking drum), Davy Knowles (guitar, vocals), and Andy Hess (bass), while Keller Williams will handle vocal duties on their July date and Tim Bluhm (Mother Hips) taking over for [...]

Because sometimes you have to let the footage speak for itself.

"According to The Sun , Britney Spears is interested in having her body preserved by liquid nitrogen upon her death and be brought back to life if advancements make it possible. “Brit gets these obsessions and this is the latest,” a friend of the pop star told the British tabloid. “It started when someone told her Walt Disney had been preserved by cryogenics to be revived in the future. That was a myth but it got her researching the foundation and she became convinced it was worth a shot.” - PopDirt Filed under: Beats , Yankee [...]
30 years ago today, Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis committed suicide by hanging himself in his home, just prior to the their first US tour. I will not go into any of the stories or theories that may or may not have happened to Curtis in his short life; there are already far too many authoritative books and documentaries on the subject - all I will do is tell you is that Joy Division are one
Ronnie James Dio died on 16 May, 2010. I was in a pub, drinking a beer when somebody came in and gave the news. Half of the pub practically dropped their drinks; and jaws. It's one of those things that, when you think about it, is sort of logical but... it just seems wrong. Anyway, I'm not gonna go into exaggerating stuff and start melodrama. Dio was a king of rock, and he will be a king of rock, nothing more and nothing less. Let's just say Elf, Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Heaven and Hell. Here are just [...]
