Thoughts On The Dead

Thoughts On The Dead I've been ambivalent about seeing The Dead when they play Madison Square Garden in April. For me, what I really loved about the Grateful Dead was Jerry Garcia. I loved his sweetness and soulfulness, and how he was the linchpin of an American music that took so much in and spanned so much - rock, R&B, folk, jazz, experimental, bluegrass, psychedelia and more. When the Grateful Dead were on, they had a power that was overwhelming and undeniable. But after reading about the shows and listening to Monday night's show [...]

HT Review: The Dead @ Gramercy Theatre

HT Review: The Dead @ Gramercy Theatre On New Year's Day, when the news that the surviving members of The Dead were reforming for a spring tour I couldn't have been more excited. Bob Weir and Phil Lesh have hit the road hard over the past few years and I've been underwhelmed with their solo projects. Yesterday, The Dead took Manhattan harder than the Muppets did back in the day performing four times at four completely different venues including a spot on The View. I caught the band's 8PM show at the Gramercy Theatre and I left an hour later thoroughly impressed and excited to [...]

Rothbury Returns With Dylan and the Dead

Rothbury Returns With Dylan and the Dead Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News Featuring multiple stages, Bonnaroo -like interactivity and stronger greening initiatives (and on-site environmental activism) than any other North American camping festival, Rothbury returns to the Double JJ Ranch in a remote part of Michigan for a four-day Fourth of July celebration (July 2-5). Much like Bonnaroo did during its first year, Rothbury's debut leaned heavily on jambands. This year, Rothbury is branching out to include myriad genres, including indie-rock, electronica and reggae. That said, this year's headliners are Bob Dylan [...]

Video: The Dead - Till The Mornin’ Comes

Here's a new film of The Dead rehearsing Till The Morning Comes directed by drummer Bill Kreutzmann's son Justin and produced by Jay Blakesberg... These guys are clearly having fun preparing for next month's shows. My favorite part is when Billy points at Mickey Hart and says "Can you believe he doesn't understand what 4:20 means?" It's good to see them laugh.

MySpace is Dead? (2): Rich's Rebuttal

At least this graph is more credible than the last one Rich sent me: Yes, obviously Facebook is winning the race, but this actually shows that for the most part traffic has stayed steady on MySpace over the last year. Mere fluctuations. For MySpace to die they'd have to experience a little more dramatic drop in its 60 million (!!!) monthly visitors. Besides, of course Facebook is leaving MySpace in the dust. Everyone and their grandma has started joining. Seriously, someone's grandma added me [...]

MySpace is Dead?

MySpace is Dead? My friend and I had an intense argument the other night (somewhat alcohol induced) about MySpace . He thinks it’s “dead” and I felt he had no support for this claim, so he sent me this overview of the site's users today: The picture it paints is sort of funny and only partially true, but I still hold that MS is in the top 3 (far from dead) behind YouTube and Facebook as far as social sites that intro people to new music. So Rich, quit hatin:) Thoughts? -Tooth

Death of An Album - The Hip Hop Stimulus Plan by DJ Explosive

This was a great article that was sent to me by DJ Explosive.  It's posted on his blog . Written by Xplosive . Last week I mentioned that I was hesitant to write a complete eulogy for the packaged collection of recordings we’ve come to know as an album. Well, I’ve reconsidered. Here it is. The album is dead. At least in hip-hop this is the case and, from what I hear, the same is true for other genres. So that [...]

BG: One Man Gathers, What Another Man Spills - Bands Choose To Gig In Florida

BG: One Man Gathers, What Another Man Spills - Bands Choose To Gig In Florida In the wake of last week's unfortunate Langerado cancellation , there is some good news for those of you who still plan on heading down to Florida as a number of bands who had plans to play the fest have picked up shows in the area over the same weekend. Girl Talk and Deerhunter will share a bill at Ft. Lauderdale's Culture Room, while Modest Mouse will take the stage at Revolution. The Pogues will be at Pompano Beach's Pompano Amphitheatre, while King Khan & The Shrines will hold court in Miami at Vagabonds. [...]
