As I'm sure you're all aware, tomorrow marks the dawning of the Rapture (6 P.M. Eastern Standard Time), in which believers will be whisked off to eternal salvation while the earth's tainted masses (see: atheists, mimes, music bloggers) will be sentenced to 5 months of pestilence, famine, and other vaguely unfavorable things. Because you'll need a kickin' rad soundtrack to spin while the locusts devour you whole, we've assembled Repent! , a mix of 17 songs steeped in that sweet End Times Flavor™. Enjoy, and pick up a t-shirt while you're at it. [...]
RIYL = Max Richter, Greg Haines, A Broken Consort You get the sense that, when listening to Owl Splinters , the end really is nigh. The ominousness of it all -- Deaf Center burrowing forever into a minor key. What I can only imagine as being orchestrated in an ice-cold meat locker, the pieces presented on Owl Splinters inhabit the thick-aired space of time just before the death-scythe slides into your chest. It's that piqued tension brooding in advance of imminent destruction. Softly plinking pianos, like keys of ice, and madly [...]
Decided to do a quick badly-mixed mix today. A bunch of stuff I'm really enjoying at the moment. Most of this music is from the first 3 or 4 months of 2011, including a couple yet-to-be-released tracks. Like I said above: it's badly mixed, so don't expect too much. Track list and download link below. Chicken, Waffles, and Robots Download 01. Demdike Stare — Quiet Sky (Modern Love) 02. Deaf Center — Divided (Type) 03. [...]
Photo by Kimberly Sikyea [ Type Records ] ( buy vinyl ) ( buy CD ) ( buy mp3s ) The first release on John Twells' Type Records was a short album called Neon City by the Norwegian duo of Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland. Type Records had risen from the ashes of Neo Ouija's and Twells project Xela, but had increasingly veered away from the enchantingly fractured IDM Neo Ouija was known for, with Xela's experiments with [...]
Its been quite a few years since Pale Ravine first darkened the Raven doorstep and ushered in an era of Norwegian doom that we've never quite recovered from; but now the duo have reconnected and let slink into the night another piece of their tattered souls. In the interim Skodvin, the cellist half of the duo, has spent more time eking out his place amongst music's darker recesses with his night terror inducing works as Svarte Greiner. Now that sense of dread combines with Totland's fragile, bittersweet piano for the full cinematic sense of tension and release. Just [...]
Best of 2011: Cooper
There was so much really great music that I heard this year, to the point that putting together these lists was quite difficult and time-consuming. But even so, there are still a lot more albums out there that were recommended to me by others that I simply never got the chance to hear, as well as some that I felt needed more listens for me to fully absorb them, so they sadly won't be showing up on here (Danny Brown, Julianna Barwick, The Weeknd, Fucked Up, PJ Harvey, Main Attrakionz, Tune-yards, Yuck…I could go on and on). I'll [...]

A certain juxtaposition of image and sound that gets into just the right zone of resonance and removal: videos by Ivan Villafuerte , stumbled on while researching d_rradio . The above features "The Atomium - Part Two" by Stars of the Lid and "Early Evening Reverie" by Auburn Lull. Deaf Center — "Owl Splinters" Type There's a moment at the 4:52 mark of "Close Forever Watching", the penultimate track on Owl Splinters , where Otto Totland and Erik Skodvin get as close as anyone has this year to making my heart stop. It's at this interval that song's rumbling crescendo of static and strings suddenly plummets , absorbed into the vacuum of a single piano note. [...]

Deaf Center: Owl Splinters
For their first album in six years, Norway's Deaf Center move beyond the low-fidelity experimentalism of their past toward a more vibrant veneer enhanced by high-end analog engineering gear. For their first album since 2005's acclaimed Pale Ravine, the Norwegian duo of Erik Skodvin and Otto Totland, known as Deaf Center, moves beyond the low-fidelity experimentalism of its past toward a more vibrant veneer enhanced by high-end analog engineering gear. The end result is the spectacular Owl Spinters, eight compositions of shimmering black ambience that boast a powerful new sense of grandiosity and catapult Totland's piano and Skodvin's cello [...]

Deaf Center - New beginning (tidal darkness)
Deaf Center : your soundtrack for crawling into a dark hole to die. Actually, the music on their new album "Owl splinters" is often quite beautiful, but yeah, not necessarily healthy for susceptible listeners. Everyone else, consider this highly recommended.

Deaf Center begint opnieuw
Luister alvast de track 'New Beginning (Tidal Darkness)'. Een onheilspellende eerste helft die overgaat in kalmerend en minimalistisch [...]
