A little calm before the storm this week as we await some hugely anticipated records from the likes of !!!, Arcade Fire, Air, RJD2 and The Stooges next Tuesday. However, all is not lost, as this slow release day gives me even more of an excuse to hype up the latest relase from personal favorites of mine, Dean & Britta . Former Galaxie 500 and Luna frontman Dean Wareham just keeps on brilliantly reinventing himself, and his former Luna co-hort turned wife Britta Phillips has become the perfect Bardot-like muse to Dean's mellow Gainsbourg-like baroque [...]

Track: Words You Used To Say Artist/Band: Dean And Britta Duration: 3:50 Description: Singel from the new Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips album "Back Numbers" (Feb 27) released on Rounder Records. Video directed by Richard Agerbeek. Formats available: Flash(.flv) | QuickTime | Windows Media | MP3
The only new release that caught my eye this week was Dean & Britta's Back Numbers (buy it). Based on the first track, "Words You Used to Say", this won't be a big departure from their recent work, great mellow tunes and sweet vocal harmonies, plus some choice covers of Lee Hazelwood and the Troggs. And their previous release, the Words You Used to Say EP is worth getting for the incredible cover

WPvideo 1.02 ImpromtuWakeUp Here's an AWESOME video of the Arcade Fire performing 'Wake Up' during their show at St. John's Church in London on 1/29, courtesy of Stereogum. The Arcade Fire are known to play post-show sets late into the night, and it appears singer Win Butler ran into a little trouble with security last night after their Porchester Hall gig. Earlier this week, the Knife took home six [...]

"I told myself I'd never feel again." Dean & Britta ~ You Turned My Head Around from Back Numbers by Dean & Britta
DEAN & BRITTA "Back Numbers" A big big big shoutout to Data Rescue II (Electric Bugaloo) for managing to save 31,000 songs off my failed to mount LaCie 160GB drive. Thing is, once I erased that drive, it was fine. I was panicky that 4 years of burning my cds and lps (and subsequently getting rid of some (trust me I have too much music)) had amounted to zero. So, don't be

Do you remember when Isobel Campbell (formerly of Belle and Sebastian) teamed up with Mark Lanegan (formerly of Screaming Trees/Queens of the Stone Age) for the album "Ballad of the Broken Seas" last year? It was a very interesting and cool record that had a distinct alt-country sort of feel to it, especially taking the sweetness of a voice that is Isobel Campbell and placing it alongside Lanegan's raspy and whiskey-soaked singing. As spectacular and great as that record sounded, a male/female duo has (essentially) topped that in 2007. Really I wanted to use the Campbell/Lanegan record to [...]

Picking up right where 2003's L'Avventura left off, Dean And Britta return with their new full length Back Numbers . As with L'Avventura and their work with Luna , Wareham and Phillips know how to tastefully cover other artists material both staying true to the original and equally giving it a life of its own. This feat is accomplished a couple of times on Back Numbers but no more eloquently than Britta Phillips take on Lee Hazelwood and Ann-Margret's [...]

Dean & Britta "You Turned My Head Around" - Not unlike her partner Dean Wareham, Britta Phillips specializes in an aloof, understated vocal style that presents emotions in a muted, yet undiluted state. However, on this cover of an old Lee Hazlewood/Ann-Margaret number, her voice shoots up in the chorus like a burst of fireworks as she's overcome with love and amazement. It's still sort of mannered and restrained compared to many other performers, but it's a revelation in the context of their album and within the song itself, which reverts to a familiar Luna-ish languor [...]

Well, its turns out there is indeed life after Luna for Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips . The former members of the pop outfit that had a great run of success in the 90's and early 00's and have been busy since the breakup in 2004. But this duos collaboration actually begins before the Luna retirement as Wareham and Phillips released an album in 2003 titled "L'Avventura" on Jetset records and an EP not long after in 2003, "Sonic Souvenirs". The two have also been busy doing film scores, including the Academy Award nominated "The Squid [...]

Is there any doubt that these two are the hottest looking couple in indie rock? You can also add, hottest married indie couple, as the love birds Dean (Wareham) and Britta's (Phillips) new album Back Numbers is soon to come...
