If you heard the future, would you recognize it? Deastro aka Randy Chabot is a man whose art challenges conventional pop at every turn. Whether it's making his unique blend of swirling bleeps and bloops over driving beats or designing his many album covers, he definitely has a talent for creating a lot of interesting things. He recently self-released Incinerator last month, much to our collective delight here at VS. But what makes him tick? What inspires a mind to turn out such unique and beautiful material? Equipped only with a press pass and notepad, I [...]

The electronic savant of Motor City is back with the brand new Incinerator EP . In order to mark the occasion, DEASTRO (born Randolph Chabot Jr.) packed up his beats, blips and bobs in an old kit bag and headed to BreakThruTV for a special episode of BTR Live Studio . There, with the help of a couple buddies, DEASTRO festooned the floor with enough patch cords and adapters to keep your local Radio Shack in business well into the next decade, and got down to performing [...]

Deastro: Incinerator - Deastro is an experimental synth-pop artist from Detroit. After numerous synth-pop records, experiments and multiple transitions, Randy Chabot (aka Deastro) has yet again surprised me. Only a few artists change their style every record as often as he does and so the question is: Which iteration would he take with this record? From his early demos, Deastro has always had an original and non-conventional sound. All of his self-released, early works DID have one thing in common: They were completely his. His first LP, Keepers , [...]

I've become a bit of an Applications, or apps, nut recently. There are some pretty amazing music making, and discovery apps out there. Soundcloud and Spotify lead the way in the sharing and discovery department, but there are many others with a unique and specific approach which help fine-tuned music geeks and those looking for [...]
Once in a while I'm going to feature an artist and their work over the course of an entire post. Today featured artist is Deastro . So who is Deastro? He's Randy Chabot and his synth-pop electro is among some of my personal favorites. He's based out of Detroit, signed to Ghostly International and well... I think this video best sums up who he is as an artist and person: When it comes to things he's released over time, most people think he only has 2 releases. Actually, he has [...]

Deastro’s one and only inhabitant Randolph Chabot isn’t content to make do with a small collection of his own desert island discs. In fact he is such a frenzied operator his own record label Ghostly International appear to be finding it difficult to keep up. How else could you explain him releasing an EP on cassette from his own blog before his paymasters realised they should be helping with the non musicmaking side of things. Chabot probably agreed with a nod or a single worded email because he hadn't the time while in throes of putting together another dozen or [...]

Gobble Gobble is Edmonton's Cecil Frena, musician, experimental music promoter and all-ages gallery/venue owner. He started Gobble Gobble after blowing out his throat playing in hardcore bands, turned his attention to crafting pop. Good thing he did. Drawing the attention of blogs with last year's "Lawn Knives" (which turned up on a lot of best of 2010 lists), he's also been a band people were talking about from this year's SXSW. For fans of Deastro, synth driven pop and old school video games, check out his latest, a 73 single called " Wrinklecarver ", download it below. [...]

Reviews. Webster's dictionary defines review as: To make like new or restore to freshness, vigor or perfection. This is the result of those inquiries. Cut Copy: Zonoscope - After anticipating this as much as I was, it was admittedly pretty difficult to let it speak for itself over my own expectations. I guess I was hoping for them to revert back to what they did on Bright Like Neon Lights . Did they? Of course not, they've already done that. [...]
The Detroit-based duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. is the band of the moment and their live show is not to be missed. They like to take to the stage in NASCAR racing suits with large JR JR light up letters behind them. Their newest release, My Love Is Easy: Remixes Pt. 1, featuring remixes of [...]

[RSS Readers: See post to listen to audio] I've had this synth line from Future Islands in my head since I woke up, does it remind you of Arcade Fire at all, the overall sound of this song? What does disco/synth pop do in the winter? well it doesn't hibernate, I think this style of those genres is perfect all year around, hope to hear more from Selebrities . Deastro is a pure ball of energy that might be untouchable at times, this song should be towering [...]

The detroit based duo just released a remix e.p. featuring Deastro, Kasper Bjørke, Prussia & Diego and the Dissident. The music are just fine with the reference to soulful falsetto just a lazier the hipster style, trying to sounds like not trying, but yeah i found the songs interesting. Try it yourself. Anyone who knows me knows that there are 2 things that I focus on in life: Fashion and music. Well, music and occasionally Project Runway . Recently during London's Fashion Week, a memorial service was held at St. Paul's cathedral to commemorate the life of Alexander McQueen who died earlier this year. Björk was in attendance and even performed a special song. In case you weren't aware(and why would you be), McQueen designed multiple dresses for Björk over the years including the dress/make-up she wore on the cover of Homogenic [...]

For all the records that August and September 2010 have brought us so far, none have been more noteworthy than those I bring you today. I'm highlighting a few bands that I have some history with as well as a couple of newcomers. I won't bore you with the details just yet, but lets just say it didn't turn out as nicely as I would have hoped in all cases. In fact, emotions range from absolute disgust to positively pleased. And we're walking... Les Savy Fav: Root For Ruin - [...]
“Get Frostied” is just one vice from Deastro’s Mind Alter EP (Ghostly International), an uncensored follow-up to his acclaimed early-2009 release, Moondaggar. With spiraling electronic flair spanning the quickstep drumbeat and distant echoing vocals, simply listening to the single makes you feel half-baked—and consequently question his definition for the term “frosty.” Add some pills and [...]
