Death Songs played a sparklingly good release show for the excellent Sung Inside a House album last Thursday at Holocene. Rachel Milbauer was there, as was her camera, and here are some pics from the great set! Click on each photo for a larger version, and more after the jump. [ Subscribe to the comments on this story ]

BUILT TO SPILL, FINN RIGGINS ( Doug Fir , 830 E Burnside) Did you miss the secret, invite-only Built to Spill show at Bunk Bar this past October? Yesterday we saw my list from 50 to 41. Today, the countdown to my number one album of 2012 continues with Deer Creek Canyon by Sera Cahoone at number 40... but first, a few honorary mentions. Above is the cassette player I picked up last weekend. I think 2013 will see a large resurgence in the cassette as a novelty ironic item. In particular, don't be surprised if more labels start selling these and including digital downloads within the cassette packaging. * * * * * [...]
DEATH SONGS, BARNA HOWARD, DJ ERIK MENTEER ( Valentine's , 232 SW Ankeny) Death Songs shows off '60s-leaning pop-rock chops by way of frontman Nick Delffs' elemental, spirit-possessed songwriting, resulting in tunes that are both feel good and full of ghosts. The band isn't ever afraid to get their hands dirty, and their animated live shows are spectacular, tarnished things of beauty. NED LANNAMANN High You Can't Buy b/w Rock N' Roll Gangsta by BOOM! The week leading up to this week's radio show was spent taking it easy. It's almost the end of summer, and after several consecutive weekends of house projects that overlapped into weekday evenings, it was a needed break. The resulting playlist was a mix of randomly-pieced together new releases paired with some classic favorites such as Belle & Sebastian (circa 1996), The High Dials (2006) and old The Fresh & Onlys (2009). Favorites on the new side include a recently announced new 73-single on Suicide Squeeze by Gap Dream, the opening track [...]

Visiting the parents is often a stressful time. Despite their incessantly busy schedules, they have actually learned to relax in retirement despite their hectic lifestyle. I visited them two weekends ago now. Hence the absence of an August 17 radio show recap; there was none. Instead, I participated in my brother's wedding. Having just one brother, this was a first. And I'm very excited to have a new sister. He and Diane dated five years before their engagement, just like Andi and myself. (Their engagement story, [...]

Into the Woods recently posted the latest installment of their Feels Like Home series—this one with Death Songs , the band of former Shaky Hand Nick Delffs that's steadily grown from a milder, more acoustic-oriented outfit into a fully loaded gospel-soul rock band. This is a fine take on the charging "Ophelia," shot in a rustic house, with Delffs on the Wurlitzer and Justin Power slamming the downbeats. Some reports indicate Delffs (a recent father) has moved out to Idaho, but Death Songs have been kicking around town playing plenty of shows in Portland in recent [...]

If Nick Cave decided to start a shoegaze band, I think it might sound a little like The Janitors 'Death Song'. The Swedish five piece describe themselves as "evil shoegaze boogie woogie". If that's not enough to get you curious then there's little more I can type! Inspired by the work of LoOp, Spacemen 3 and JAMC, the Janitors create an almighty wall of noise with a vintage twist, thunderous and all consuming. Pick up the Janitors 'Death Song' on the 'Worker Drone Queen' EP at Bandcamp . Download audio file (The-Janitors-Death-Song.mp3) [...]

Download: Hey Rosetta! - "Bandages" I feel like I've been rather late to the party with Hey Rosetta! having only been listening to them for a month or so. Death Songs is a new project by Nick Delffs (of The Shaky Hands and The Castanets) with his brother. Their self titled EP came out, and it's got that lo fi acoustic feel with Delffs classic quivering vocals, like he's afraid of the words he's singing. I just found something so mystical and serene about it- despite the morbid title, or maybe in light of it. There's a deep sincerity to it, with songs like, "Let This Body Go" filled with philosophical observations that sound almost Buddhist, "seek and you'll never find". Ophelia has this sort of [...]
I've really enjoyed the work of the Shaky Hands , so I'm happy to introduce you to Death Songs , the projects of Nathan and Nicholas of the aforementioned group. They've just released a self-titled 103, and it's full of low-key country-fied jams. This track sounds a bit like early Conor Oberst with a gently strummed guitar to go along with it. Having listened to the whole collection, I'm quite pleased to tell you it's full of great tracks just like this one, so [...]
I wonder, sometimes, how many of you reading this blog have been here for, say, the last four years or so. It was November 2007 when I first moved my old music site over to Blogger, and I am sure one or two people have been around since then, but I am never all that sure. I only mention this because Death Songs hark back to the earlyish days of the blog, and very much to the early days of the Song, by Toad podcasts. Back in those days - mid 2007, I think it was [...]
