Being sick is terrible. I've been fighting something nasty since Tuesday. Luckily the worst was out of the way fast - after recording a 101 degree temperature Tuesday night, the fever subsided and I've slowly returned to a state that's manageable. I was still a bit stuffed up on the 25th, but by 10pm all that was left was sniffling and the occasional cough - my regular voice was back. On November 25, I decided to do something a little different. Not only would I tell a few stories about [...]

It's been over two years since multi-instrumentalist and neo-folk singer Joel Thibodeau, aka Death Vessel , released his last album Nothing Is Precious Enough but he is set to head out on a tour across the UK, Ireland and Europe next week. Each show presents a rare chance to see an intimate solo performance from the man himself and we're lucky enough to have a pair of tickets to give away for the opening, London show. To be in with a chance of seeing Death Vessel at The Old Blue Last on Tuesday March 1 [...]

It's funny. I've come to think of Bowerbirds as an old standard- one of those bands that's been around forever and that everyone knows about. Which isn't quite accurate at all. They've only been around for four years, have only put out two albums, and the last time I saw them play New York was about a year ago at Mercury Lounge. Now they're headlining a Bowery Ballroom show. The attention is completely deserved. Though sometimes their dark dark dark folk tunes don't entirely speak to me, they're well-crafted and beautiful songs, and they're a fun band to watch live [...]
After some server shizzery , the Ümlaut 's back. With some-tunes old and some-tunes new … French duo The Dø (say 'dough') finally got their 2008 breakout A Mouthful issued stateside. With the track's sassy-girl vocals and all its hand-clappery, I dare you not to shimmy. Death Vessel has one of the prettiest female voices I've ever heard from a dude. Yes, a dude. And it's a song from five years ago. So if you haven't already, seek out more of their tunes . This new Club 8 is [...]

A frontman going solo to cut an album, when done well, mixes the artist's personality and style with what is best about their band and delivers something that's both familiar and fresh. With Go , Jónsi , leader of Sigur Rós never ventures too far from the epic sound his band is known for but does give a taste of a different approach to crafting highly symphonic songs. Jónsi's distinct voice, falsetto and bright, nimbly dances around the opening tracks. He effortlessly slips from [...]

When I compiled my original Best Of 2008 list last December, it was a snow day. The sky dropped about a foot, maybe a foot and a half of fluffy white stuff and we lowly sub-compact drivers could go nowhere. Between ranking albums and locating album art, I took a stroll around town with my camera. The above image comes from that trek. Overall, I was pretty happy with last year's list but, in revisiting all the albums from 2008, I now see quite a few that I left out. [...]

mp3: Death Vessel - Obadiah in Oblivion The air is unusually crisp today, but in a good way. It's finally starting to feel like December. I've been listening to this song non-stop since I got home from the Diamond Junction show on Saturday. Enjoy it.

Bruno's Torso - Death Vessel (from Nothing is Precious Enough For Us ) Two things about the cost-of-living bonuses and social security. Background: Social Security has an automatic cost-of-living increase that has taken effect every since since the adjustments were instituted in 1975. This year, however, since there was no inflation (and in fact there was deflation) no increase will happen. This creates a problem because people assume those increases will happen and if they don't, they get angry. So, in lieu of the cost of living [...]

Long before the Beatles kicked off "She Loves You" with a now-famous count, Lawrence Welk was doing it with "a-one and a-two." A lot of musicians do a count at the beginning of a song, but that isn't necessarily the part of a song you recall. That made finding a contribution for this week's Contrast Podcast #184 theme a bit tricky, and it's bound to lead to a fine mix. The songs I considered were all so beautiful that choosing one was difficult, so I am posting them all here. My choice for [...]
Last night our newest photographer Mary Rehak stopped by the Mohawk for an incredible set by Fruit Bats, Death Vessel and local band The Low Lows. From the looks of these pictures, the show must have been a great one. Follow the jump for a pictorial experience of the show. If you like what you see, say hi to Mary on flickr and tell her how awesome she is/hire her.

Death Vessel was one of last year's big surprises. Their release, Nothing Is Precious Enough For Us , was the debut post published on the new version of FensePost, which you currently read. And the album made it into the FensePost Top 33 and 1/3 Releases of 2008, achieving number 14 to be exact (although in retrospect, it should have hit 11 or 12). So, it comes with no surprise that I am excited to have another excuse to write about this band. "Circa" [...]

I should probably be out at the Northside Festival right now brining you more coverage of the weekend's festivities. I am, however, a little too festivitied out. Nevertheless, I saw some great music this weekend at Brooklyn's mini music fest. Here's a brief recap. Friday night brought me to Studio B for the first time, a very cool venue nestled on an out-of-the-way street in Williamsburg. The first band I caught was an extremely cool, extremely different three piece called Elfin Saddle . Their music is definitely inspired by Asian scales and instruments, and the amount of [...]

Taking in some R&R for the summer weekend. This video and song from Death Vessel capture the vibe of a summer day. This song reminds me a lot of Cloud Cult. Death Vessel-Circa Myspace
