Saturday night I finally got to catch the show on TV. 80's haircut, Autotune, and the orchestra dressed as extras in the film V is for Vendetta . If you haven't seen West's performance, here is how the set list went down: Nightmare Robocop Flashing Lights Amazing Say You Will Stronger Good Life Heartless Touch the Sky The [...]

Guitarist Duane Jarvis died this week after a long battle with cancer. I met him around 2002, when he was touring with my friend Amy Rigby, and they stayed with me and my wife at our Brooklyn loft. I can't say I knew him well, but we did spend one memorable evening together listening to records and talking about music. I made him a copy of a Don Covay record that I was obsessed with at the time, and he gave me a copy of his then current release, Certified Miracle . The songs are good and soulful, and [...]

I can't remember the last time I've been to an amusement park. The rides and all that are cool. But I don't dig the long walks, long lines, and the over priced concession stands. The burgers and fries suck. The mini pizza's are usually made with to much doug and not enough cheese, leaving it a saucy mess. Also, as they continue to make these rides more death defying, someone is bound to meet death on one of those things, and isn't going to be me. If I feel the need to live on the edge these days, Ill just try pulling [...]
...just to watch him die. the very emphasis of the commandment: thou shalt not kill, makes it certain that we are descended from an endlessly long chain of generations of murderers, whose love of murder was in their blood as it is perhaps also in ours. so said freud. ten celebrations in song to our murderous impulses. a [...]

The New York Times ran a great article on the mid-70's early rock/punk outfit Death and it's second generation VT based tribute band, Rough Francis, on March 12th. Check it here . It is a must read. Here's a video of Rough Francis playing a Death tune at the Monkey House in Winooski - 12/6/08 The original Death album, ... for the whole world to see , was rereleased on Drag City last month. slightly more new music fucked up have a new single and, as you might expect, it rules: [mp3] fucked up--"no epiphany" also, some weirdo detroit proto-punk band called death , who only ever released one single in 1971 before turning into a gospel group, recently put out an album of their previously unavailable early 70's material on drag city. crazy stuff: [mp3] death--"politicans in my eyes" [...]

I remember as a kid, running around and after a while getting tired and thirsty. When I'd get ridiculously thirsty, anything that looked somewhat hydrating and tasty would make me salivate no matter if it was actually something to quench my thirst or something hazardous to my health. It could have been windshield wiper fluid, quarter water juices, Windex or Kool-aid. At the time, my sub-conscience could make no distinction between juice and cleaning fluid or anything else of the like. If it was blue, red or green and was somewhat clear, that liquid was the solution to my problems, so my [...]

Hey, listen. Maybe you feel slightly out of touch when you have to hear about a great band from the New York Times , but me? I take 'em any way I can get 'em, bwah. Death was a fantastic, um, (I'm desperately trying to find a way to avoid saying "proto-punk") ... Detroit band that existed for a brief period in the early/mid 70s, but didn't have the fortune to get further than a self-pressed single (" Politicians In My Eyes ") and some demo recordings. Thankfully, those demos recently [...]

One band has got a grip on me the last months. Always finding a way back to my ears. They're called White Lies . I don't know why, but they put me in some sort of cocoon. I could stay there for days, just listening to their music and feel every emotion there is to feel. It's been a while since a band made me this way. Last Saturday I went to see them at the Botanique. Every time I walk in I just start smiling. It definitely has my heart. The gig took place at [...]
Death - You're A Prisoner This shit rules. It's sounds like Hüsker Dü and The Dirtbombs in a brawl while Funkadelic look on. Formed in '71, brothers David, Dannis and Bobby Hackney started out playing R&B infused jams. Soon afterward, they discovered The Stooges and MC5 and the seeds were sown. After attending an Alice Cooper show, you could say that they were pretty much owned by rock n roll. Brother David especially, who took it upon himself [...]
So, this is getting way too hyped - kinda like Wavves. It's funny, though, that the Times picked up on Death a good month after its release date and almost a year after Ben Blackwell and Chunklet hipped the internuts to it. And while this... [More after the jump...]

The original Afro-Punk ? The group is called Death and you can read about this group's pioneering work in The New York Times here . [via Raymond / Urb ]

Op NYTimes.com is een prachtig artikel te lezen over Death. Niet de metalheads maar de lang vergeten prepunkers die zich Death noemen. In 1976 verscheen een demo van de band, ...For The World To See . Check [...]
Death's 1974 demo album, released for the first time last month on Drag City, is rupturing the walls of the reissue scene, partly due to the recent NY Times article and its aftermath, but mostly for their obvious claim to one of the first slots in the history of punk. Death was brothers Dannis, Bobby, and David Hackney, who started off playing RnB but switched to...

Death is an afro-punk band from Detroit Rock City composed of the brothers Hackney (Bobby, David, and Dannis). The band formed when the brothers were teenagers and their early musings were more soul and funk based. After catching a live set by Iggy and The Stooges, they drifted more towards rock, and cemented their sound following the release of The Who's Quadrophenia . They were set to record a 12 song EP in 1974 for Clive Davis and Columbia Records, but Davis wanted them to change their name to something, how do I say, a little more consumer friendly. [...]

that's what rapper canibus , said about the man you see above. christopher wallace, a.k.a. the notorious B.I.G. is he the greatest? i don't know, and i'm not here to dispute that. i do know, however, that he single-handedly changed hip hop both while living and posthumously. the prophetic emcee has every rapper borrowing lyrics and every hip hop fan listing him on their top 3 list. i first got on biggie in 5th grade. my man ben zweifach, for reasons unknown, had the "life after death" double-disc album in his room one day. i asked to [...]

I'm one of those idiot friends you have who always seems to have some kind of drama going on. Although it makes for entertaining conversation when you get the question, 'so, what have you been up to lately?' (which is usually the first sign that the conversation has ended before it has began) But in reality its actually quite fucking depressing. You tell yourself, ' no! I'm living life! I'm doing stuff and being in the NOW ' ... put that self help book down, its a bunch of wank. When i'm in moods like this i usually [...]
