I wanted to share both a great song and a great moment with 1146 readers.  This video is a few years old but my drummer showed it to me yesterday and now I can't stop watching it.  About 1:25 into the song he realizes the whole room knows it and is singing along- and it almost literally knocks lead singer John McCauley back off his feet, like a strong gust of wind.  It's the moment the song became bigger than himself. The Newport Folk Festival has weathered many a storm in its 53 year history. It disappeared in the '70s, nearly went bankrupt in the aughts, and faced a complete dry up of sponsorships. But last year, Newport jewelers Alex and Ani stepped in to became a major backer, the festival returned to non-profit status, and a Board of Advisors (Colin Meloy, Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jim James, and Ben Knox Miller) was established. The Newport Folk Festival kicks off in just two short days with a fantastic triple-bill that leads into Saturday and Sunday's full slate of performances. This weekend the granddaddy of all music fests – the Newport Folk Festival – will get under way with three days of roots, folk, funk, soul and rock or what can basically be defined as quintessential American music.
