There's that awful moment where you look in your gym bag and realize you forgot your portable music player on the coffee table, and so as opposed to playing your "NEW GYM PLAYLIST 23 you just made, you're forced to listen to LAZER 103 FM through the gym's speakers with Disturbed or Sevendust or Taproot or Drowning Pool songs echoing off the glistening lats and delts of all the body-builders. I'm miffed because I don't like forgetting things, but I really don't mind schlock metal on the rare occasion I'm actually at the gym. Acquiescing to the mindset of gym-music [...]
Photo Credit: Luis Ruiz Despite fighting overcast days and torrential downpours, Newport Folk Festival still managed to achieve the desired effect — amaze viewers with a diverse, stellar lineup, quality production, and streamlined operations. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the weather only enhanced some of the more somber or intense sets. Why not listen to The Tallest Man on Earth while standing in the rain or watch the boys in My Morning Jacket bounce around the stage as a storm rolls in? There’s also something to [...]
Newport Folk Festival @ Fort Adams State Park - July 27-29 Words : Jeffrey Greenblatt Photos : Gerry Hardy In my review of the 2010 Newport Folk Festival , I deemed the granddaddy of all music fests the "music fan's, music fest," and upon my return visit this year that statement has never rang more true. Despite persistent gloomy, overcast skies and periods of rain (which included a monster storm early Saturday evening during My Morning Jacket's headlining set), people were still smiling throughout and were genuinely excited to see [...]

Ghosts loomed large everywhere this year; Iron & Wine's Sam Beam covered "Long Black Veil," Spirit Family Reunion paid tribute to Karen Dalton with "Green Rocky Road" and the recently departed Doc Watson, who played Newport several times over [...]
Photography by Nicole Holoboff Deer Tick put on a sweet performance yesterday here at Newport Folk Festival. Although it was short, it was indeed sweet. McCauley wasn't as goofy and talkative as he often seems in live shows, but it didn't matter. The band sounded great together. They did a mix of songs from Divine Providence and War Elephant . Photo by Nicole Holoboff Is there a cap on the amount of times one can watch a video before it gets dangerous to your health? Because if there is, I have definitely capped it today with this video. Looking through some live performances of Deer Tick , getting ready to see them for the second time this weekend at Newport Folk Festival, I found this gem. Although it isn't a piece of breaking music news, it is a powerful performance and I think it deserves sharing. The video shows the great [...]
The Newport Folk Festival kicks off in just two short days with a fantastic triple-bill that leads into Saturday and Sunday's full slate of performances. There's so many of our favorite acts playing the fest and Jeff detailed six of them in his preview yesterday. For those of us who can't make it out to Newport, NPR will webcast over 25 sets from Fort Adams Park. The full schedule for NPR's webcast has just been posted and we're overjoyed to [...]
In order to draw a line sharp enough to incise any form of lasting impression on anyone in this day and age of instantaneous infatuation and swifter upchucking of any given flavour of the month it has to be pretty fine. And preferably runs closely between convention and innovative creativity. Smudged either way and you're just the next Deerhunter, or of Montreal, or blur things further and you'll wind up Etch A Sketching The Strokes. Edmonton, Alberta's Hot Panda at times sound like an eloquently compiled mess of the aforementioned, not least because Chris Connelly opts to seemingly [...]
This weekend the granddaddy of all music fests – the Newport Folk Festival – will get under way with three days of roots, folk, funk, soul and rock or what can basically be defined as quintessential American music. For the 2012 installment the fest has grown in size with the addition of a fourth stage, and will "unofficially" open on Friday night at the historic Fort Adams State Park with a fantastic triple-bill that features Wilco, Blitzen Trapper and Megafaun. The fest, which will once again be streamed live on NPR featuring both audio and video, [...]
Deer Tick – Ashamed
I wanted to share both a great song and a great moment with 1146 readers. This video is a few years old but my drummer showed it to me yesterday and now I can't stop watching it. About 1:25 into the song he realizes the whole room knows it and is singing along- and it almost literally knocks lead singer John McCauley back off his feet, like a strong gust of wind. It's the moment the song became bigger than himself. Deer Tick is an alt country band from Providence, RI. Their newest EP, [...]

Deer Tick @ Forecastle 7.15.12
I finally got a chance to see Deer Tick do a set of their own material (their "Deervana" set was great though). I really underestimated how funny and great they are live. They started the set with this announcement: “I’d like to take a minute to offer up a prayer for our friend who is [...]

Festival Review: CoS at Newport Folk Fest 2012
The Newport Folk Festival has weathered many a storm in its 53 year history. It disappeared in the '70s, nearly went bankrupt in the aughts, and faced a complete dry up of sponsorships. But last year, Newport jewelers Alex and Ani stepped in to became a major backer, the festival returned to non-profit status, and a Board of Advisors (Colin Meloy, Gillian Welch, Ramblin’ Jack Elliot, Jim James, and Ben Knox Miller) was established. Now, the festival has never been stronger, and even some damp evenings couldn’t keep the 2012 edition from being another in a nearly unbroken [...]

Forecastle Day 3: Photos And Music
I think Sean and I would both agree that Day 3 of Louisville, Kentucky's Forecastle Music Festival might have been our favorite. Not only because it boasted the most musical acts of any day, but also because it was a day full of surprises and fulfilled expectations from some of our favorite bands. Walk The Moon, Charles Bradley & [...]
