(It's a long one, watch out) SPIRITUALIZED, NIKKI LANE ( Wonder Ballroom , 128 NE Russell) Read our article on Spiritualized. HERE WE GO MAGIC, HOSPITALITY ( Bunk Bar , 1028 SE Water) Hospitality are a decidedly New York band, but some Pacific Northwest magic has nevertheless made its way in their purposeful, methodical pop. The band recorded its first EP with the help of [...]

If that crazy bastard John McCauley is involved, count me in. John's main gig is Deer Tick , but he's also popped up in a couple of indie supergroups: Middle Brother (along with Delta Spirit's Matt Vasquez and Taylor Goldsmith from Dawes) and, most recently, Diamond Rugs , featuring members of other bands like Los Lobos, Dead Confederate, and the Black Lips. The bare bones, stripped down rock n' folk vibe is prevalent in the record. John's signature snarls shows up on songs like "Gimme a Beer," Call Girl Blues," and the killer holiday-themed [...]

We've been counting down the days until this year's Newport Folk Festival , since the lineup was announced back in the beginning of March. With the fest essentially extending to three days this year, thanks in part to Wilco's Friday night show, and music ending on the early side for music festival standards, it's no surprise that there have been a handful of "late-night" options announced for those headed Newport. Much like they did last year, local heroes Deer Tick will again take up residency at the Newport Blues Cafe , [...]

Deer Tick, Turbo Fruits, hold the Mayo On a night that promised tequila-filled amateurs roaming the streets and a "super moon," many people were barring their doors, stockpiling ammunition and preparing to spend a quiet evening alone, but those brave souls who ventured to Deer Tick at El Rey Theater on Saturday night were handsomely rewarded. Openers Turbo Fruits, which is ex-Be Your Own Pet's guitarist-now-frontman Jonas Stein, rocked fast and heavy. The song "Mama's Mad Cos I Fried My Brain" from the band's first 7-inch had every member and some of the crowd [...]

Stumbling in the footsteps of legendary booze-hound acts like the Replacements and Guided By Voices, Providence quintet Deer Tick professes its love for alcohol pretty much every chance it gets. But judging from Deer Tick's work - most recently, the 2011 full-length Divine Providence and the new EP Tim , which contains leftover songs from the same sessions - the social aspect of drinking matters to the band as much as the buzz.… [ Read more ] [...]

I was introduced to Deer Tick last year when I caught the band's performance at the Echoplex. On stage, frontman John McCauley was raw and unapologetic, and I left that evening stunned, and not just because I stumbled out of the venue with broken eyeglasses. Seeing as it was Cinco de Mayo, a holiday now built around the concept of drinking, I was prepared for more mayhem this past Saturday. While there were moments of abandon in the evening, the band kept it mostly reigned in. And yes, I say this despite the fact that McCauley's last [...]

![Deer Tick roll through Phoenix [May 3rd Recap]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4244949_lg.jpg)
For the second time in seven months, Rhode Island band Deer Tick stopped into the Crescent Ballroom in downtown Phoenix to rock the joint with their good time fusion of bar room rock n' roll, folk, country and punk. The set list was largely similar to their last stop in October, featuring a bunch of tunes from their latest album Divine Providence . Once again, front man & "drunken devil" John McCauley showed why he's one of the most raw and charismatic live performers out there. But he also shared the [...]
