Once again DelFest will return to Cumberland, Maryland over Memorial Day Weekend. The Del McCoury Band will headline and host the four-day festival and they've invited some of the usual suspects like Yonder, The Travelin' McCourys and The Infamous Stringdusters. Event organizers have also scored a surprise in bringing the Trey Anastasio Band to DelFest for two sets. Anastasio is seemingly returning the favor of when the Del McCoury Band played at Phish's Camp Oswego festival in 1999. There's plenty of other HT faves on the [...]

The invention of country-pop, as spearheaded by the likes of Shania Twain, has proven to be a sustainable commercial, though artistically not harmless, proposition. Bland eye-candy singers, their vocals auto-tuned, guitar strapped on and sold as country. The inarguably talented Taylor Swift reportedly asked to be marketed as a country singer not because her music has its roots embedded firmly in that genre, but because such a claim would deliver an audience. Many teenagers today may describe themselves as country fans, but they don’t mean any of the many Hanks or George Jones, but Swift and Carrie Underwood. [...]

The 12th edition of Warren Hellman's Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival will take place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park from October 5 - 7. This will be the first installment of the fest since Hellman's passing. Event organizers have just announced the first batch of confirmed artists and they include Rubblebucket, Ralph Stanley, The Del McCoury Band and Jerry Douglas. Here's the full list of confirmed HSB '12 artists... Rubblebucket / Ralph Stanley / Dirty 3 / Red Baraat / The Head [...]

There is a place nestled within the confines of the towering mountains of the Midwest that has named itself after the plateaus in which it is embedded. The name of that whistle-stop, the name of that precipice, the name of the entire region itself are all one and the same. Ozark, Arkansas. Ozark Mountains. The Ozarks. In the warmer Midwestern months, upon that place and atop it's mountain, two tens of thousands of folks descend. You take a right (or was it a left?) after driving through places [...]

With Easter approaching, here's a third mix of songs that relate in some way or another to the Christian faith, following the Saved! 1 and Saved! 2 mixes. The first drew from verious ages and genres of music, the second comprised soul musicians doing God music. This lot comes from rock, folk, country and indie backgrounds. Some artists featured here are devout believers, some are sceptics, some are people one wouldn't necessarily have down as being even remotely religious (Cave, Waits). Most are original songs, a few are covers (for example, Wilco covers Woody [...]

Del McCoury Band: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning [ purchase ] Here we are again, at the "1952 Vincent Black Lightning." J. David wrote a great essay about the song earlier this year. But it wouldn't be right to let a week of Richard Thompson music going by without including the quintessential song about "an object that's British and romantic and mythological," as Thompson described it. By virtue of composing "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," Thompson has been called "the man who wrote the best song about [...]
For the 6 million-plus folks living in South Florida, finding a music festival to call one's own has been a losing proposition. The ill-fated Langerado bounced around to several locations before succumbing to the Great Recession . Repeated attempts to bring Langerado back have languished . However, a new festival is making a strong bid to correct all that. The Virginia Key Grassroots Festival features an eclectic, foot-stomping lineup for February 9th through [...]

In the next few days, when I gather up too many $100 dollar bills, I will spend them all on a fucking ticket. A ticket, my friends, to a motherfucking festival. Pardon the language but I tell you what, my ass is jazzed. After a 2011 spent purchasing tickets (Cotton Jones, The Sheepdogs, Iron & Wine, and GAYNGS) and then realizing as dates approached that holy shit dude, I'm a single mom with a job, there's NO WAY I'm making that gig, I had to bail. All that money down the drain, all those good times enjoyed by [...]
The second round of artists have been announced for Wakarusa 2012. Joining Pretty Lights on the headliner slot will be Primus as they're gearing up for tons of dates still supporting their last effort, Green Naugahyde, and Umphrey's McGee, Girl Talk, Big Gigantic and more have all been added as support. This will be a [...]
Happy 2012 live music freaks! Hope you all had a killer 2011 and finished it off with a bang and some good shows! Last week was obviously a busy week for live music fans in the New York metro area, so naturally, the concert calendar slows down a bit this week as we start the new year. But that's not to say there aren't some great shows to hit...

Jazz music originating from New Orleans, Louisiana is revered the world over, and one of the city’s most iconic institutions is about to celebrate 50 years of stompin’ and blowin’ the distinctly American style. The legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band will perform a special 50th anniversary event at Carnegie Hall on January 7th, and they won’t be doing it alone. PHJB is known for keeping the early spirit of jazz while mixing with the modern musical experience, garnering them a wide variety of performer friends. For this celebratory concert, they’ll be calling [...]

Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer : The Mountain [ purchase ] Steve Earle with The Del McCoury Band : The Mountain [ purchase ] A mountain is the product of geological upheaval, but it represents solidity. Dave Carter, in his song The Mountain, finds a symbol of spiritual truth here. Carter referred to many different spiritual traditions in his writing; I don’t think divisions between them were important to him. The Mountain refers to Native American beliefs with [...]
The Voodoo Experience is now in the rearview and the relentless fall concert schedule is starting to slow down (although one could easily keep themselves busy on the live circuit until NYE) and therefore it's time to start speculating about the 2012 Jazz Fest lineup. Hard to say who will be at the top of [...]

With most of the HT Staff being based in the Northeast we have often gushed about the amazing experience of attending a Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm's barn. Well we're not the only part of the country that has a special spot to attend a concert, as those in and around McMinnville, Tennessee can justly boast about the awesomeness of Bluegrass Underground , a regular series of concerts that take place at the Volcano Room in Cumberland Caverns. The shows, which take place in a cave 333 feet below ground, have featured a mix of contemporary and legendary performers, from Ralph Stanley [...]

As authentic as you can get, a true tribute by a man who deserves one of his own. If Bill Monroe were still alive to record, his albums would sound just like this one. Such is the influence he had on Del McCoury - both as a player and as a former bandmate. McCoury, who played in Monroe's band for a single, yet undeniably inspirational year from 1963 through 1964, has put together a collection of Monroe tunes that extends far beyond the term tribute. In essence, it is a true, respectful, and...
