Third day at Sound City 2013 , and I was flagging. Martin made the perfect suggestion that we should check out the Korean bands day showcase, where there would also be free food and booze on offer. Breeze past the inexpressible band name, and London trio Qtier are a quite singular, strongly positioned proposition. Like a calmed Darkstar, or Delphic rewired to incorporate even a smidgen of subtlety Kind is as yet their coup – a cushioning gauze of intricately manipulated electronics and intimate vocals that's delicate as gossamer, yet still pulsating as much of Pantha du Prince's estimable kingdom of a back catalogue. It's a blog-happy trap beat exercise that takes some fun turns during its 5-minute span, and is bound to go down well at house parties. Manchester's Delphic are at it again with the latest in a string of confounding actions. In January it was the less than wowing release of 'Collections'. The latest? They've taken 'Rehab' by late cult soul singer Amy Winehouse of the pop genre they've professed to love so much and remixed it. To celebrate the start of their European tour, Manchester trio Delphic are giving away a special tribute they made to celebrate late great Amy Winehouse, and her seminal track 'Rehab'. Delphic's tribute doesn't run rough-shot over a classic, but instead tastefully gives the track a new lease of life combining pitched vocals, trap percussion and leftfield synth pop stabs. Delphic posted a very telling interview on their website in the wake of releasing ‘Collections’, the band’s second album. Their debut ‘Acolyte’ (released in 2009) was a reaction against “NME guitar bands”, an album that was “heavily dance influenced and featured euphoric builds set to hooky melodies”. Though underappreciated by the mainstream, ‘Acolyte’ certainly lived up to these claims. Yet, in the band’s own words, with ‘Collections’ “we have changed quite drastically…we had to rebel against ourselves and against the current trend”. [...]
