Today we have a new historical release for the vintage reggae fans. Live At The Turntable Club was produced by music legend Niney The Observer and is the first live album to ever be recorded in Jamaica. This album allows us a glimpse into the 1974 Kingston club scene; a time and place that could be considered the big bang of modern music. The songs were mixed by King Tubby at his renowned studio on Dromilly Avenue and mastered in London at The Beatles' Apple Studio on Saville Row. Here is the song Have Some [...]

Hello again and a warm welcome to Wild Weekend , issue 64. As no real interesting new stuff struck my eardrums this week alas, we'll just have to make do with a bunch of oldies goldies. No probs, as we're talking tracks by Delroy Wilson, Sir Doug Sahm and Louis Jordan amongst others. And a Japanese star fruits surf rider. Now is that wild or what? We'll start with a fine song from a very fine album: Doug Sahm's '74 Tex-Mex masterpiece Groovers Paradise . Sir Doug's got the [...]

So at 5 o'clock tonight I board a flight for Florida which means I'm officially Spring Break bound. While I'll be palling around Orlando with Mickey and Donald, you should download this well-crafted mix of warm weather jams. Bonus Spring Break points to anyone who can guess the opening movie quote. Click here to download Citizen Mix Vol. V - March 2011 Tracklist: 1. Delorean - Stay Close (RAC Remix) 2. Yuck - The Wall [...]
The Wailers' version is great, but this is Delroy ...

Syl Johnson's raw soul and funk has always been a deep favorite of mine. Somewhat always pushing outside of what the mainstream doing, Syl still managed to break into the charts several times, but never gaining the real recognition that he deserved, which he explored early on in a wave of introspection and churning wonder on Is It Becasue I'm Black?, which then became something of a self fulfilling prophecy. Throwback : Syl Johnson - Is It Because I'm Black (don lowed) -- Although this song certainly resonates with [...]

Delroy Wilson - Have Some Mercy Observers - Different Fashion When we posted that George Faith song last March , I knew it was a William Bell cover, but I did not ken that it was actually more of a cover of this Delroy Wilson jam (if this is even the original ?). Such the stellar vocal performance from Delroy.
Delroy Wilson, one of the founding pioneers of the Reggae and Rocksteady styles, has sadly largely been forgotten in contemporary music history. The volatile singer got into the business at age 13, and left his mark in the single "Run Run," one of the best jams of the era. Though originally recorded for longtime collaborative producer Clement Dodd, it was a late sixties re-working of the tune with producer Keith Hudson that perfected it. The song's lyrics are simple threats, "you better run run…I'm gonna get you," but they are backed by a world class 4/4 rocksteady beat, congos, and [...]

I'm not sure how many of you out in cyberspace grew up in the Bay Area during the late 70's/early 80's. Nor do I know, if you did, if you remember how at the crack of dawn before the cartoons came on, how KTVU would play an almost Helen Levitt-esque video slide show of life in Oakland, set to What's Going On by Marvin Gaye . Due to my childhood addiction to morning cartoons, this video, along with Gaye's most famous, will forever be etched in my brain. So in honour, today we have Jamaica [...]
This old heart of mine Maybe it's my mistake To show this love I feel inside 'Cause each day that passes by You've got me never knowing If I'm coming or going... No, non c'è bisogno di sentirsi vecchi (almeno non più del solito), ma oggi ho comunque voglia di regalarmi un paio di belle versioni del superclassico soul firmato Isley Brothers, This Old Heart of Mine . Spero che vi piacciano. >>>(mp3): The Isley Brothers - This [...]
I know I'm a little late but I have to admit I still have Olympic fever. Maybe it's from lack of sleep. The underwhelming performance of the US track team is kind of upsetting but hey at least the Jamaicans are on fire. As a reggae fan I take solace in that and you gotta love Usain Bolt! And now I present some track inspired tracks just for you. Take your mark...RUN!!!! Isaac Hayes: Run Fay Run [...]
For anybody taking notes, we here at the Institute of the Deep and Real have by now covered two of the three "masters" of Jamaican soul singing: Anton Ellis and Ken Boothe. I give these guys the reverential status treatment because they are the most innovative and most expressive and have the deepest, most consistent bodies of work out of many brilliant and under-known Jamaican soul singers. I

Mixtapes and compilations, curated by artists I admire, have always appealed to me in a voyeuristic/curio type of way. For the music junkie, it's a little bit akin to peering into a sliver of ones soul. Jonny Greenwood, of Radiohead acclaim, sees his reggae/dub compilation drop this week on the Trojan/Sanctuary label. For those [...]
This is just fun. I can't say I've ever been a big fan of the "celebrity picks" type product, but Trojan Records 40th anniversary does deserve some special treatment I suppose. And anything that gets this music into the ears of more folks is ok in my book. So here we go Trojan Records that mainstay of the reggae has put Radiohead's Johnny Greenwood in charge of the sound system for the night. It's a party. Delroy Wilson - This Life Makes Me Wonder Like I said, regardless of how you feel about guest track selectors, this music stands...
Trojan Records is set to release a cool reggae compilation, curated by Radiohead sonic wizard Jonny Greenwood. Given his eclectic solo projects and his otherworldly manipulation of Radiohead's oeuvre, reggae's a more likely fit than you'd first think; the genre's...
