Following on from last year's inconceivably wonderful, inaugural London leg of All Tomorrow's Parties' city-dwelling sibling I'll Be Your Mirror , the show this month rolls on as Glaswegian guitar heroes Mogwai team up with Barry Hogan & co. for what look set to be three days of aural devastation (look no further than Slayer churning out seminal '86 LP Reign in Blood in its entirety on the Friday) and slightly more dainty sonic delights (ATP Recordings' very own Tennis and the [...]

Just a quick heads up for those in or around Los Angeles this weekend: Three of my favorite acts will be performing at Los Globos in Silverlake this coming Saturday, May 5th: Demdike Stare, Tropic of Cancer and Vatican Shadow (live debut). I saw Demdike Stare live at Unsound in New York two weeks ago and they blew my mind. So, yeah.. this event is not to be missed if you can make it down there. Facebook event page / $12 tickets here .

Photo by Natasha Phillips After a week's rest, LWE correspondents Chris Miller and Jordan Rothlein file their report on Unsound New York 2012. Now in its third year, the Unsound Festival's New York edition (the festival splits its time between Gotham and Krakow, Poland) has quickly wiggled its way up to the top of New York's music calendar. Not so much a festival proper as a loose agglomeration of shows at venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn, it doesn't feel so much like a special event as a welcome bubbling-up in [...]

While the bigger names on any festival billing may be the ones to pique any initial intrigue, neglect to wade through any deeper recesses there may be at your own ignorance. Indeed All Tomorrow's Parties is, needless to say, an organisation rightfully revered for its dedication to carving out intricate niches within its every endeavour: from flinging the proverbial fingers at the intrinsic disappoints of every New Year's Eve with a Sonic Youth blowout to attracting an arsenal of saxophones originating from the world's every corner to Butlins, Minehead on an annual basis, as far as ATP are [...]

Albeit not quite approaching the sparse horrors of Demdike Stare with whom she soon tours, Camella Lobo's latest under the guise of Tropic of Cancer , The One Left, is an irrefutably minimal work that teeters on intense genius. Penetrative twangs of guitar feature although less than a handful of notes are ever struck; Lobo's exhalations are more evocative of spectral drone than human vocal; its flat, exhausting and ultimately deflating snares sound like a vitriolic afternoon down the local butchers. The One Left is to feature as the A-side to forthcoming 12" Permissions of Love [...]

by Andrew Frisicano Julia Holter @ Le Poisson Rouge in March ( more by by Amanda Hatfield ) Unsound Festival New York , the Poland-based series of avant-leaning, ambient and experimental music, kicks off five nights in NYC with two events tonight (4/18): instrumental Warsaw band Baaba scores animations at BAM, while Julia Holter, Julia Kent and Jenny Hval playing a sold-out show at Issue Project Room. Check out the festival's [...]

Although gigs in chapels and cloisters have become ever-present and sought-after of late, 'the occult new project from Miles Whittaker and Sean Canty' that is Demdike Stare probably wouldn't be Union Chapel's go-to duo were they in search of a couple of new choirmasters. The pair's Facebook profile picture – a facet of a quasi-religious phenomenon in itself with a number of adherents disproportionately inferior to that boasted contemporarily by Christianity – manifests a deathly grim juxtaposition of life and death and indeed Whittaker and Canty are here for some downright desecration in place of deferential [...]

Artwork by Yöshi Sodeöka [ Pre-Cert Home Entertainment ] Although Pre-Cert Home Entertainment is half-assedly trying to shroud the project in mystery, Slant Azymuth's self-titled LP bears a sizable share of resemblance to the projects of its collaborators, Andy Votel of the Finders Keepers label and Demdike Stare. The three are known more than anything for their bottomless record collections and the expert ways they've managed to synthesize [...]

Chart courtesy of the Economist 01. Burial, "Kindred" [ Hyperdub ] ( buy ) It was a storm so big you could see it coming for miles. For a week after Burial's Kindred EP , debuted on Hyperdub's site (smart move, by the way), the music press gushed torrents of praise usually reserved for Radiohead albums. Now that most publications have gotten it out of their system - and as a great admirer of this EP - I've [...]

[Modern Love] As much as we would rather not think of ourselves in this way, in some respects we're all primarily consumers. In few areas does our consumption mean so much as in music: what we choose to consume (as well as avoid) is how we indicate our taste and expand our knowledge. As a vinyl buyer, there's a ritualistic aspect of consumption that [...]

(Our post was given some colour by Philip Caza via 50Watts ) Our genotype mutates slowly, its dominant components a mostly stable tarot deck of archetypes of literary, visual, digital-graphic and subcultural derivation – things that hit us hard in the head when we were being formed, things that perhaps we shouldn't have been exposed to. Because, as if through osmosis, they penetrated our skin and attached themselves to our soft nervous system. There they remain, never to be dislodged, we return to them again and again in a Nitzschean drone... [...]

FINDERS KEEPERS, 2011 // CD / BUY: CD / DIGITAL Taken from the compilation Make Do & Mend 02: Demdike Stare Supports Finders Keepers . This track is an exclusive edit of Billy Green's "Toadstrip" from the excellent Stone OST reissued by Finders Keepers in 2009.

This week's episode finds me considering... - gloomy witchy techno from England - Guided by Voices' heartbreakingly ordinary new album - and Nim, the tragic chimp whose life was ruined by a pompous turtlenecked professor with a hard-on for his female postgrad students and a disregard for the simple simian's heart. the hipster chimp with the heart of gold [...]

Modern Love is a gritty, Mancunian label specializing in the deeper, darker side of things. Performing at All Tomorrow's Parties' I'll Be Your Mirror London 2012, curated by Mogwai and ATP, Modern Love heavyweights and drone and ambient enthusiasts Demdike Stare released the first two parts of a four part release last month. Last month Modern Love posted this mix by Demdike Stare on their Soundcloud that gives a glance of their more atmospheric side - touching on some Middle Eastern guitar, boys choir material, elementary jazz fusion and even disco-y acid house: [...]
Wow. How's that for a title, eh? Sounds like a Rick Wakeman "classic", doesn't it? Look, I'm enjoying the more experimental side of modern dubstep, but it really needs to watch itself if it's going to avoid having the piss ripped out of it. Let's just pretend it's called something else and move on, because this track is amazing. It's taken from Demdike Stare's recent Elemental - Parts 1 & 2: Crysanthe/Violetta ... you see the problem? This is an odd record. If you're familiar with the New Zealand free rock [...]
