I first discovered Dengue Fever on an excellent CD compilation of world music, The Rough Guide to Planet Rock , and I quickly fell in love with their song "We Were Gonna." In my mind, this was the music that should have been playing in the Jabba the Hutt's palace scene in Return of the Jedi , not Sy Snootles and Max Rebo (but I reveal my nerd roots). I had to double-check this one, but I definitely saw Dengue Fever in the summer of 2007 at a Jelly Pool Party in Brooklyn, NY - and it was amazing. The band is the quintessential product of Los Angeles with diverse sounds and sights. Their music is an exotic blend of Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf and garage rock. Imagine if the B-522s spent more time backpacking through South East Asia. The most recent single "Cement Slippers" packs in a ripping saxophone solo with an infectious chorus.
