CD Review Dengue Fever: Venus On Earth M80 Records buy CD/hear samples Three years after their deliciously different debut Escape from Dragon House , California-based Khmer-rock outfit Dengue Fever returns with more of their trademark Cambodian-flavored retropop. The concept still sounds like some critic's parody of an absurd world-fusion band, but as I discovered a couple years ago at Bumbershoot, these guys can rock a crowd, even if they're singing in a language shared [...]

The lightning-quick people over at In Flight at Night have the details on "Venus on Earth," the new album (due Jan. 22) from local Cambodian psych-pop phenoms Dengue Fever . I've heard just the one song (posted below), but I do know that the band plans to announce an album-release blowout on Jan. 31 at the Echoplex. A side note: Bassist Senon Williams will depart Radar Bros. at the end of their residency this month to concentrate on playing with Dengue Fever -- which means he will play two album-release parties in [...]

I have to say I thought it was pretty funny that Nada Surf played an in-store last night at a used CD shop where they probably had hundreds of copies of the band's debut High/Low in the cutout bins directly above their heads (the show was in the basement). The band - or at least two-thirds of them, bassist Daniel Lorca was not present - were in town on a promotional jaunt to talk up their forthcoming record Lucky , due out February 5, and they [...]
My kid and I have a cold; you know one of those where you feel like you got hit by a truck? Yeah, that's me, dragging around the house with a box of Kleenex. Here are some things that cheer me up as much as I can be chee - hee - ha CHOO. Yeah, just stay back about ten feet. 01. Culture Bully has a really really excellent post about the best mashups of 2007. I am a huge fan of mashups, and Chris D. shows you where to get [...]

We've spilled our far share of digital ink on Los Angeles' Dengue Fever this past year, and with the changing of calendars, we see no reason to stop in 2008. Set to release their third album, Venus On Earth , on January 22nd, Dengue Fever have made available two tracks for you to preview. The first track, "Seeing Hands" - a slightly lo-fi psychedelic garage pop song with lyrics sung in traditional Khmer - was released as a digital single on iTunes ( buy it / stream it ), where as the second [...]
Wow, it's only December tenth and I'm sick to death of Christmas music. Actually, the first time I heard "Jingle Bell Rock" at the Ralph's the day after Thanksgiving, I was sick of it. Anyhoo. If you're loathing on the holiday cheer too, please do yourself a favor and go check out the new Dengue Fever single, "Seeing Hands." Dengue Fever is a Cambodian funk fusion band, I guess you would call it, based in LA and fronted by the fabulous Ch'hom Nimol, and they are releasing their third album on January 8, 2008. It's [...]

Director John Pirozzi's documentary, Sleepwalking Through The Mekong that follows the Los Angeles-based Dengue Fever as they perform for the first time in Cambodia shows tomorrow night at Egyptian Theatre ( synopsis ) at 7:30pm. This trek to Cambodia also marked the first time that a Western-based band playing Khmer Rock has performed in Cambodia since Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge took over the country in 1975. For bit more information on what happened in Cambodia in 1975 and Cambodian Rock, check out John Pirozzi's other Cambodian Rock documentary, Don't Think I've [...]

I was in LA this weekend and of course the talk of the town was a certain inmate who'd been freed by a certain sheriff. Paris Hilton - Stars Are Blind While that was entertaining on all the tv sets around town, including the sushi bar in Little Tokyo where I grabbed some dinner, other less retarded [...]

I've never been a huge fan of what the New York Times loosely refers to and fervently reviews as "world music." But I recently discovered a band that is, in its own twisted way, a true representative of world music. Dengue Fever is from Los Angeles. The story goes like this: Cool LA musician named Ethan Holzman goes to Thailand with a friend, falls in love with a certain type of Thai pop music with roots in '60's American garage punk. (I'm assuming that it arrived there via American soldiers visiting the beaches on leave from Vietnam.) [...]

I never heard about Dengue Fever until Kevin Cole (to whom I could listen for hours and hours) played them on KEXP Seattle yesterday. Dengue Fever is a very unpleasant disease, transmitted by a certain type of mosquito. But see for yourself, the peeps above don't look that damaged (although I'm not sure about the guy with the towel and the goggles) and their music is rather up-beat, too. Cole explained that the band's aim was to revive Cambodian surf & rock music from the 50s, and while I'm [...]

It's Labor Day weekend here in the USA, and in this area that means some small recognition of workers; much visiting of friends, family, and the great outdoors; and the massive Seattle arts festival known as Bumbershoot. There's irony in the festival's name, as the summers here in the northwest are as notoriously dry as the rest of the year is wet. When your humble dj earball trekked to the thronged Seattle Center yesterday for a big dollop of culture, the sun was hot, the music loud, and the people [...]

Innipúkinn um sÃðustu helgi var nær eintóm vonbrigði, Ghostigital og Mugison best. Ne nni ekki einu sinni að skri fa um hann. Morrissey var skÃnandi góður og hress. Fullkomin poppstjarna með frábæra sviðsframkomu. Skipulagið á tónleikunum var fáránlegt. Þeir sem áttu miða à stúku fengu sæti niðri á gólfi og þeir sem voru à stæði voru à stúkunni. Svo endaði það með þvà að þeir sem höfðu mætt fyrst á staðinn til að tryggja sér fremstu sætin niðri voru illa sviknir þvà einhverjum fokkings hálfvitum datt à hug að gefa skÃt à liðið sem sat prúðbúið og standa fyrir framan sviðið. Fólk tróð sér fyrir framan sviðið svo þeir sem fremst sátu sáu ekki neitt. [...]

Animal Collective - Did You See The Words Animal Collective is part of the psychedelic folk movement. This song has dreamlike piano along with the usual collection of experimental noise found in their music. Lyrics like "Have you seen them, The words cut open Your poor intestines cant deny when the inky periods drip from your mailbox and blood flies dip and glide reach down inside" sound like a bad acid trip. Buy "Feels" Apples In Stereo - Ruby [...]
