Today marks the beginning of La Fête de Marquette here in Madison; three days of world music sure to turn you on to something you haven't heard or seen before. One act I consider to be a can't miss is Dengue Fever , who will take the state tomorrow at 7:15. I got in touch with drummer Paul Smith , who was kind enough to participate in our continuing 5 Questions with Muzzle of Bees feature. Could you lend some information on the recording process of Venus [...]
Say what you will about the L.A. Times , but when they call your band, "sexy and eclectic", or label you, "world music for the cool kids", they're your new best friend. That's the case for Los Angeles psychedelic rockers, Dengue Fever , who's latest album, Venus on Earth , is splitting open music critic's heads... in a good way, of course. And if you're prone to hallucinations and find a liking to Charles Mingus, then these fellas are just for you. It's rare when you find a band's mission statement to mirror, well, their [...]

When talking to my friends I make it clear that I'm not Chinese and that I come from a Cambodian/Khmer background. Because being Chinese is 1) Not cool 2) The ladies become intrigued by the fact...like some exotic shit. Okay while I fall out favor with other Orientals, I'll explain the history of my parents. My parents came over to Canada in 1984 after staying in a Thailand refugee camp for 3-4 years. The birth of my oldest sister occurred during my parent's "stay". Anyway years before the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot decimated the country the [...]
Recently there has been an interesting flux of artists whose sound hinges on a specific worldly influence. Dengue Fever favors the indigenous sounds of Cambodia, but also see artists like Beirut and Gogol Bordello who pull mainly from an eastern European source. The music created by these artists is less topical, less contrived, and infinitely more sincere than the hokey attempts made by the likes of Peter Gabriel (yeah, I said it) , Sting, et al. to infuse aspects of world music into their work hoping it will somehow supplement their wilted creativity. But for bands [...]
So I'll be covering SXSW next week for the LA Weekly. I have never been nor do I have any idea of what to expect. I'm pretty excited to go though. I've been asking around and have generally been met with the boiler-plate response that "SXSW is awesome." However, one friend did tell me to expect lots of free BBQ, free liquor, free indie rock and lots of loose women. Which by my guesstimation sounds eerily similar to heaven, or at the very least Freaknik for white people. The [...]
There are some marvelous shows around town tonight. Here in Baltimore make sure to catch Abby Mott, Pulaski (CD Release), and The Jennifers at the Ottobar . In DC you might not want to miss Exit Clov, Dengue Fever, and Cordero at the Black Cat . If you're Philly bound, makes sure you stop at the Khyber to see Gildon Works, Beat Jams, The Tundra Toes, and The Sunshine Recorder. Finally if you happen to be in Skippack, PA(where ever that is), there is a quality show at the Village Coffeehaus [...]
Cambodian psychedelic pop from the 70s or maybe from some Bollywood megaproduction. The first time I listened them was on Weeds (fooled by the amazing riff of One Thousand Tears Of A Tarantula ) and even though this band is so particular: guys from L.A, cambodian singer and lyrics in Khmer, I didn't pay attention to their music. Despite of that, Venus on Earth (third album), released last month was a slap on the face. In fact their music is more common beyond what anyone might expect (you can define it "easy-listening" music [...]
My ears needed a break from the stuff that I normally listen to, and I stumbled upon this gem from a Cambodian band via L.A. called Dengue Fever that I just had to share. Best band name, they have not. I wouldn't have chosen to name my band after an infectious disease, but hey, I'm not in a group that covers some really catchy Cambodian pop tunes either. While almost all of their music is sung in Khmer, on the new album, Venus on Earth, they venture into some English songs as well like, "Sober Driver." It tells [...]

We're trying to recuperate from the insanity of the past week and this heat isn't helping. Señor Summer Solstice is not so sexy right now. Thank you so much to those who came out last night and enjoyed a good time with old friends and new friends. Special thanks to all the bands, CGT, Eagle Rock Bowling & Drinking Club, and All Star Lanes for making such a fun night possible. And special

You're lonely and you want to talk to a laaa dy. 800-989-9368. Come on, dudes. First chance to talk to a lady without having to run it by your parole officer." -- Tom, sparking interest in male listeners during a scary lull where Hatch feared the Scratchy Record program would outdraw The Best Show [...]
