Tipps für eine Woche voller besserer Musik. Diese Woche mit Spielzeug hinter Glasscheiben, New York auf Papier und Schweizer Musiker. Montag, 12.

The above photo is of the Palm House in Edinburgh's Botanic Gardens, and was taken and passed on to me by Dylan, of Blueback Hotrod legend. And given that the weather outside is all kinds of shit I thought there would be a sort of bitter irony in using it today. See - that's how nice Edinburgh can be, so what the fuck is this pissing rain all about? Anyhow, traditional British whingeing aside, it's going to be a pretty bloody mental week this week. Thursday is going to be a particular swine, what with the awesome David [...]

Red + Yellow = annoys me. It's not just that completely non-sensical title either, frustrating though it is. Instead it's an eight-track collection of wildly inconsistent output, verging from masterpiece to dirge throughout the 45 minute running time. When he's good, he's very good; but when the inevitable troughs of quality appear you find yourself wondering why you even bothered. Opener 'Clap Hands' is one such masterpiece, building up from a combination of beats and hand claps (the clue's in the name) and gradually adding layers until Jones comes in with his off-beat delivery. This is when [...]

Apart from the daily delete of Abercrombie & Fitch promoting spam comments I've not touched this blog for a month. So its about time for another of those roundup " music Ive been loving " posts. This one seems to feature returning favourites, rather than brand spanking new finds. DENIS JONES Its been a long wait since Denis's 2007 debut "Humdrum Virtue" beguiled all who listened with its beat boxing, loops, and fragmented vocals that brought to mind Jon Martyn mixed with Badly Drawn Boy. To put the proverbial [...]

Good as The Miserable Rich were at the Institute of Contempary Arts back in late February I hadn't planned on seeing them again live for a while. I certainly didnt expect to amble across them under a bridge on the other side of the Atlantic, with an audience of a million or so bats slowly waking to streatch their wings for the evening. Apologies for the dodgy quality and wind tunnel sound but its not bad for a borrowed point and click stills camera. Also sorry for returning to SXSW but I only just loaded the video onto my computer. [...]
Highlights of May (yes I know we're well into June!): The semi religious experience that was Prince live at Camden's Koko . The Pet Shop Boys, Battle , and The Cinematic Orchestra were all brilliant in very different ways, while Patti Smith sadly bored me to tears (save for an incendiary encore of " Rock N Roll Nigger "). DENIS JONES Ok before we get to the music lets deal with the packaging of [...]
