ABOUT EXIT: EXIT Festival has come a long way in the last 12 years. Evolving from the student protests [...]

★★★★☆ The producer who developed the idea of music as guardian angel doesn’t ditch her sonic surveillance on her sophomore album. Not as clingy or up close and personal as her debut, Music Watching Over Me , Deniz Kurtel maximizes her right to be standoffish, with the introduction of Anti Pop Consortium-style hip-hop — the title track, "Right On" featuring Spearhead’s Michael Franti — increasing the pressure. Within the '80s inflections syndicating electro-pop and Detroit/Chicago layovers, "You Know It’s True" re-models two well-known pop fraudsters and "Thunder Clap" draws space fantasies in moonboots. [...]
We sidestepped the thunderstorm warnings, undiscouraged by the intermittent rain and thankfully rewarded with some serious talent at this years Mutek Festival . This year marking the 13 th edition of the festival, it is clear that with every year the programming and energy gets exponentially better. Having made the pilgrimage to Montreal on two previous occasions for the festival, I can tell you that this year was my favourite thus far. With acts such as the awe-inspiring Apparat Band , legends like A Guy Called [...]

Biggest and nicest surprise of the year thus far? It’s got to be the new Fabric 64 album out in June, mixed and also created entirely by Guy Gerber . Featuring 16 brand news tracks, this is ethereal, hypnotic, trippy tech-house, unfolding so elegantly you won’t notice the track transitions. Featuring collaborations with Clarian North (from Visionquest act Footprintz ) and TK favourite Deniz Kurtel , this is a wonderful journey of an album, which only improves and further unravels with each listen. Trust us this will sit firmly in the ‘favourite Fabric album’ hall of fame [...]

All photos by Kerian (kerianphotoandfilm.com) “A lot of my friends say that my music is a bit dark, not in a negative way, but maybe a bit more emotional. Middle Eastern music has that same quality.” If you're looking for equivalency outside the world of underground house music, releasing your first two albums on Crosstown Rebels and Wolf + Lamb (respectively) is on par with being plucked from the streets in the mid-‘90s to release on Death Row and Def Jam for your first two hip-hop [...]
The history of Fabric mixes is a long and rich one that runs through over a decade of music and includes contributions by everyone from John Digweed and Carl Craig to Metro Area and Shackleton. But despite the dozens of top-shelf artists who have helmed Fabric mixes in the decade-plus that the series has been [...]
Just heard the full version of this over on Chris Coco’s Melodica show. Deep, deep vibes.

[ Crosstown Rebels ] Crosstown Rebels has been slowly expanding its remit over the past 12 months, branching out its web of bubbly pop house to include producers like Mathew Jonson. The newest addition to its roster is Toronto-based Amirali, whose "Beautiful World" strikes a perfect median between dance and pop, a full vocal house tune sung by a thickly accented, eyeliner-sporting, brooding male singer. The vocal's almost post-punk qualities are at odds with the track's [...]

Even if you don't recognise Iranian-born Amirali from his spectacular opening track 'My Way' on the recent Crosstown Rebels compilaton Get Lost 4, one thing is certain: his style of melancholic house is most definitely going to be punctuating your year. His latest track Beautiful World has been popping up on Rebel-related podcasts and mixes, and should be known to hardcore Damian Lazarus fans at the very least. The seminal label describe the track as: "Laced with the gothic sound of Depeche Mode colliding in the future with the spawn of Art Department and Underworld at [...]

Sure, a top songs list can never not be subjective, but these selections meant the most to us over the year of 2011. The following tracks brought every minute of joy to a new high, and every moment of heartache a bit of solace. These are the songs that kept us writing throughout the year, that brought us out to shows, lead us to meet so many wonderful people, and most importantly soundtracked a year of unforgettable memories. Pending the arrival of any global calamity, looking back at the songs of 2011 only builds our excitement to see what 2012 [...]
