Nowhere near as ubiquitous as 1999, When Doves Cry or Kiss or anywhere as dirty as say Darling Nikki , When You Were Mine , by Prince is still a perennial favorite amongst the die-hards and, judging by the small grip of covers today, fellow musicians as well. It's a simple, stellar piece of heartbreak pop that, despite being released in 1980, could have easily been heard coming out of some Detroit jukebox sandwiched somewhere between The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las. Fun fact: this one [...]

Hey! Thought we forgot about this, eh? Nah... Next time I leave the country for a month, I will also leave access to the hard drive where all my files are located. So we're still aiming to re-post all of the Blogophilia volumes by summer's end. Today we have volumes 5 & 6, which feature promotional MP3s available during May and June of 2009. As always, these are gapless mixes with cover art. These are only up for a limited time, so get them now! - [...]
--> Check out our list of top CMJ performances here <-- As Keepaway left the stage and The Rumble showcase at Webster Hall came to an end, I decided to take a trip down to Ludlow Street and see what CMJ had in store between all the venues on the Lower East Side. Cloud Nothings , 19-year old Dylan Baldi's prodigious endeavor, took the stage at 11pm at Cake Shop. After having seen this band open for Abe Vigoda back in March, I knew good things were in store. The [...]
5. Will Stratton (@Spike Hill, 2pm); Last year Will Stratton wowed us with a single acoustic performance in Prospect Park. From there he continued to amaze us with his songwriting talents at our own CMJ showcase in October and with his remarkable second studio album No Wonder. Now he'll take his talents to Brooklyn where... Read More

Welcome to day number one of CMJ. There's obviously a lot of music going on this week, and if you do a bit of planning ahead, it will be quite good. While I feel that the quality of this year's bands is a little bit thinner than in year's past (more due to lack of breadth than depth, maybe because CMJ's controversial #Offline Fest has corralled a very good sampling of who's in town into something separate, and maybe because I'm used to SXSW's complete dominance of the entire scope of music trends), if you spend a little big of [...]

At times recalling Jens Lekman and others Ray Davies and Stephen Merritt, the talented and highly literate ukulele-wielding Dent May is due to make a splash with his dead-pan delivered delectable pop debut The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele . Just feast your ears on "You Can't Force A Dance Party" which might as well be the sequel to fellow dead-pan wunderkind Jonathan Richman's "Parties In The USA." Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele - "You Can't Force A Dance Party" [...]
Forest Family sent us a rad new mp3 from Dent May entitled 'That Feeling' b/w 'Eastover Wives' off his upcoming 'Paw Tracks' LP due sometime this year. We don't hear a magnificent ukelele but that's okay with us, because this breezy summer jam will suffice. Is that.. Elton John in a cape? Dent May- That Feeling Dent May- Howard (Daytrotter Session)

Once a year, some time right around now, the thermometer rises, the honeys come out, and you might start to get a funny feeling in the bottom of your stomach. What is that feeling? It's not a result of all those hot dogs you ate, silly! The feeling, as Mississippi's most eligible bachelor Dent May so melodically describes it, is love. And he is begging you, pleading with you, not to run away from it. This song is so catchy that we are sad and shocked every time it's over, kind of like when summer [...]

Click image to download these albums While assembling a top list for 2009 I found that there were four albums that really blew me away and stuck with me for the entire year. Trying to choose another six seemed a little silly to me, so here are my top four, with an honorable mention category for number five. Lhasa de Sela and Jay Reatard put out fantastic albums in 2009 and both died young in early 2010. I highly recommend checking out "Lhasa" and "Watch Me Fall." 4. Animal Collective – "Merriweather [...]

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele - When You Were Mine [Prince]

above : buy , buy , & buy . check it - below are linus' 20 favorite tunes of the 2009, which also more-or-less correspond to a lot of our favorite albums of the year: bibio 's fantastic "ambivalence avenue" had one of our '09 jams, the infinitely beautiful lovers' carvings ; three of the biggest hitters around, phoenix , animal collective , & grizzly bear , all put out magnum opuses (opi?) of sorts; m. ward 's vastly underrated "hold time" showcased a pair of pipes to rival [...]

To recap: As for My Favorite 50 Songs of 2009, I made a few rules for myself. First, a band can only appear once. Also, this is purely about singles I enjoy. For instance, I would never put Harlem Shakes' Technicolor Health on my favorite albums list, but "Sunlight" made it pretty high on this list because it's a great pop song. I like a lot of Grooms' songs and think they're probably better than many of these, for instance, but none of them made it onto this list because they work much better as a group of experimental [...]

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukelele sure did steam up The Hotbox during last week's CMJ events. We knew this guy was a charmer, but honestly who else can pull off a rhyme like "I'm going to love you for all time/ I'll kiss you and I'll hug you, that's no lie?" Prettttty smooth. If we had a chance to make this video all over again, we would place lead-singer Dent May in the bathtub, make bubbles with the available conditioners, light some candles, and give him a tropical drink adorned with a little umbrella from which he might [...]

Monday: Fuck Buttons, Growing, + These Are Powers @ Bowery Ballroom 7:30pm $15 [ tix ] Most acts that set up in front of a table are never able to truly capture an audiences attention in the live setting. They stand there, pressing buttons and twisting knobs, letting the music do the work for them and a lot of times it winds up as a boring performance. Fuck Buttons are not one of those bands. Yeah they do the pushing and twisting, but their music captivates, the sheer volume and magnitude of the sound [...]

I was reading Indiemuse.com and came across a musician located about 45 minutes west of Cleveland, I was hooked after hearing the first song. Wisdom Tooth is the name and it's a project by Oberlin's Meagan Day. Meagan's instrument of choice is the ukulele. I love listening to ukuleles. They transport me to a happy place. It's definitely music I prefer when I'm in certain situations like casual drinking with friends, a long country drive, or even cleaning up around the house. I recently purchased the Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele's record for such occasions and it [...]

Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele playing at the Getty Center with DJ Nobody next Saturday, October 10.

Hot Song [mp3] - Talk Normal Screetching, pounding, grinding ... you'll be scared to death or whishing like hell that you'd run into these girls in a Brooklyn alley. Hot indeed. Coming to LA mid-November. Catch them at the Smell. Tour Dates . Meet Me In the Garden [mp3] - Dent May and his Magnificent Ukelele I would never have guessed Dent May 's retro cheese sprang from murky Mississippi territory. Catch him for free at the Getty in LA or [...]
