Dent May fell onto our radar screen recently, and the group has put together some interesting tunes. The guy apparently plays with a ukelele and has a clear, distinct tenor voice that floats over his loungey songs. He has put together an impressive touring calendar, hitting classic venues such as Minneapolis' 400 Bar, Chicago's Schubas, and New York's Bowery Ballroom. Additionally, he is making appearances at important music festivals South by Southwest and Sasquatch. The icing on the cake may be who he is traveling with: hitting the Northeast U.S. with A.C. Newman and the U.K. with Animal Collective. [...]

A.A. Bondy Thursday night the 400 Bar showcased two bands who both play music that could be described as folk music in an macro sense, but choose very different ways to present their music. Converted folky A.A. Bondy (from his younger, more punk days) brought along Dent May, whose tongue-in-cheek folk pop served as an interesting comparison for the more serious Bondy and his band. While they choose different paths to ultimately convey their message, both men led their tight sounding bands to great sets for a fairly full 400 Bar. [...]

As with most Noise Pop shows, there was a whole lot of music at the Independent last Saturday. Indie heavy weight AC Newman was joined by recent indie darling Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and up-and-comers Devon Williams and City Light for four hours of excellent indie music. AC Newman [...]

Finally, after years of solitude and misery, the lonely/nerdy music loving crowd of this cold and indifferent world has a soundtrack, written and sung by one of their own. With his debut album, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May and his Magnificent Ukulele , Dent May seems to articulate, with a razor sharp tongue in cheek wit, the trials and tribulations of a kid looking for his place in this big world. The 12 song, 35 minute album recently released on Animal Collective's Paw Tracks label (do not under any circumstances infer that this means he sounds like [...]

Words and Photos by: Ben Van Houten Opening with "There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve," the first track from his new solo album, A.C. Newman delivered an hour-plus set of stately chamber-power-pop to great applause on Saturday night at The Independent . After weeks of hand-wringing about Get Guilty -Was the production too muted? Were some of the songs too long or too slow?-it was welcome relief that the live show rendered these questions moot via an enthusiastic set from this former San Francisco resident. [...]

The first time I became enamoured with Dent May was listening to his cover of Prince's When You Were Mine. It was more surprising to see Dent May on Animal Collective's label Paw Tracks . It's a clear mismatch, May writes pop songs and plays a simple 4 string where as Animal Collective , plays something else . Dent May comes off as the nerdy, perhaps lovable type but in that sense he comes off being quite cheesy. Reading Carmen's review of his performance while opening for AC Newman , [...]

Photographs by Jennifer Picard Chances are you learned to play the ukelele in a music class at some point in your youth. That familiar four-stringed instrument, brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants during the nineteenth century, was an icon of the jazz age, and has since become a standby in indie-pop recordings by Jens Lekman , Sufjan Stevens , and Beirut . Not to mention that Bret McKenzie of Flight of the Conchords is a member of the Wellington Ukelele Orchestra . And how about The [...]

We all tread lightly before knowing certainty but once we're around the bend and all is good, we let our guard down and we begin to relax. With The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele , the bend was nothing more than a start to the most scenic of journeys. Listening to Dent May is like sitting back with an infinite beer watching the sunset and never getting up. It is time fixed like the moment you take a photograph, yet here in The Good Feeling … you are accompanied with [...]

Photography "Baby As Dancing Snow Robot" by Tsuru Well my friends, it's time for baby and I to once again head south to Canada's winter home, the home of my birth, Flo-Ride-Duh. Should be fun & good times, first to see my family, then her's (they are snowbirds, you see, two birds, one stone), then the plan is do a little kitschy day date at Disney World , whee! Baby's never been, and granted the last time I went it looked a little, uh, not so taken care of (seriously, [...]

The ukulele ... making a comeback? Did it ever leave? Over the past couple of years I've become smitten with a few uke-loving artists: cabaret-and-fairy-dust chanteuse Uni and Her Ukelele [sic], Chico folk duo Dick and Jane and Francophile Zach Condon from Beirut . Now I can't get enough of Dent May ... or his Magnificent Ukulele. Now, Dent May may be too quirky for his own good. He plays a damn ukulele for one thing. May also likes to sport sweater vests and round, so-outdated-they're-actually-c ool glasses. His new [...]
