Daniel Rossen has an absolute gift for crafting strange and beautiful chamber pop (case in point: his two bands, Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles , and his staggering songwriting and guitar work for each), so we're psyched for the five-song solo EP, Silent Hour / Golden Mile , he'll drop March 20. Listen to "Saint Nothing" from Rossen's Silent Hour/Golden Mile.

Daniel Rossen, member of Grizzly Bear and his side-project Department of Eagles, just gave the world a listen to this delicate, piano driven number titled Saint Nothing . The track is a part of a new 5-song solo EP titled Silent Hour/Golden Mile that will see the light of day March 20th courtesy of Warp Records . Listen below.

I can honestly say everything this man does is completely inspired - whether it's under the name Grizzly Bear or Department Of Eagles , songwriter Daniel Rossen is an expert at his trade. That's probably why Warp Records are releasing a solo EP of his work in March, entitled Silent Hour / Golden Mile . The first track has been released and it's heartbreaking. There's something in Rossen's voice that's so stripped-back and semi-worried, something like a melancholic Cat Stevens , or thereabouts if I had to make a comparison. He's an essential element to [...]
Daniel Rossen, the Grizzly Bear member and Department Of Eagles frontman, is gearing up to release his debut solo EP. It's called Silent Hour/Golden Mile , and it's coming in a couple of months. Below, you can hear the first taste of it. It's called "Saint Nothing," and it's a gorgeously still song, in which Rossen shows off his estimable tenor over a warm and immaculately recorded bed of pianos and woodwinds. The man knows what he's doing. Read More...

Those travelling via Grizzly Bear or Department of Eagles ' more critically acclaimed second album In Ear Park may experience some culture shock on first listening to The Cold Nose . Whereas the former works deal in musky indie-rock majesties, Dan Rossen's earlier output with long-time buddy Fred Nicolaus takes itself less seriously, wears a novelty hat. Their debut is equivalent to that funny weird kid, who turns out to be a riot at parties. No surprise then that these tracks, first released in 2005, have [...]

Bowerbirds have given a sneak peak at their upcoming album The Clearing with this new single "Tuck the Darkness In." I was going through my itunes recently and stumbled across an incredible track that I hadn't heard in a couple of years. It was "No One Does It Like You" by the Department of Eagles. The Duo is composed of members Daniel Rossen (now of Grizzly Bear) and Fred Nicolaus. They began jammin' after being assigned to one another as roommates at NYU and from there began recording songs using samples and borrowed equipment. You can really hear Grizzly Bear style in this song, very smooth vocals and unique instrumentals. The drum beat is sampled from the Ronettes and aides [...]

One of my best albums I've heard so far is Cape Dory , a nautical-obsessed indie pop album by Colorado husband-and-wife duo Tennis . The unique album cover is a near-exact replica of a vintage album cover by Lisa Hartman (the band apparently collects '70s-'80s female pop artist vinyl just for the cover art). This got me thinking of other album cover doppelgangers I've encountered recently. Here's a collection of covers that have striking similarities to each other (intentional or not). Also, if you'd like to seem some more of these, I [...]
Happy New Year to y'all. The year-end songs compilation I posted last year was such a big success crafty bloke that I am, did it again. These are all the songs that rocked me and or gently held me in it's warm musical blanket for the great year that was 2010. This time, instead of editing myself to a nice, [...]
Blue Valentine">Blue Valentine" hspace="5" vspace="5" border="0" /> Daniel Rossen spoke to the New York Daily News about the band's work with the film Blue Valentine and how they were not able to score the film but did provide their music for it. Eight Grizzly Bear songs...

In addition to featuring at least one pivotal music-based scene , director Derek Cianfrance's Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams-starring romantic drama, Blue Valentine , boasts an impressive soundtrack, made up mostly of previously released songs and new instrumental compositions by Grizzly Bear, as we first reported last year. Not only do 8 songs with vocals from the Brooklyn quartet appear "in all of the scenes of Dean & Cindy falling in love," but — according to the film's Australian website — 2 new, non-Dead Man's Bones compositions by Gosling, a [...]
