I know it's been a long time coming, and a lot has gone on in the weeks since I last posted including holidays to Greece, moving servers for this blog, an apparently mind blowing Daft Punk set at the O2 Wireless festival, and now Glasto - that weekend of mud - is also coming [...]

As some of you know, my internet at home has been like out for like 2.5 weeks now. This has been making it hella annoying to post, since it's not always at my convenience. Damn corporate bureaucracies! In any case, it's time for me to drop some Department of Eagles on you. Department of Eagles is a project of Dan Rossen, one of the members of Grizzly Bear. Who I LOVE. Fair enough to say, I think you can hear how Dan contributes to Grizzly Bear... [...]
People have been pestering me to make a weekly playlist for a while now, so here it is; the best music post on SC over the past week.Yeah, it's imperfect, but things will get better. Now the only days of the week I don't have features for are Thursday and Saturday. Any suggestions? Blonde Redhead - 23.mp3 Feist - 1 2 3 4.mp3 Björk - Charlene.mp3 Dept. Of Eagles - No One Does [...]

As a general rule, I try not to snag tracks from other blogs. I like to keep my content unique. But every now and then, while I'm browsing another blog, something hits me in such a way that I just have to post about it. That exactly what happened when I heard Department Of Eagles 'No One Does It Like You' demo. This song, from Grizzly Bear's Dan Rossen side-project, is absolutely stunning, with it's mesmerizing pop melodies, and Brian Wilson-esque sense of space. This is quite possibly the best song I've heard since 'Good Girl/Carrots'. I can't wait to hear [...]
Department of Eagles - "No One Does It Like You". A new track by Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear's terrific sibling band, something that is to my ears a song of infidelity - and yet so deliciously laid back, so warm and easy, so calm & affectionate that it's hard to find even a lick of frustration. Like Grizzly Bear's cover of "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)" (posted last week), "No One Does It..." was inspired by the ridiculously cheap Phil Spector Back to Mono box-set. But although "No One"'s got a modest Wall of Sound, [...]

Department of Eagles I know this has been posted elsewhere, but Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear sent us his other band 's brand new demo over the weekend, and it's way too fucking good not to post. Like IGIF says, Rossen's voice has something "strangely satisfying" about it; you might even call it hypnotic. I must've listened to this track 50 times over the last few days, and I remain in awe of the song's throwback production techniques and gorgeous vocal harmonies: mp3: Department [...]
Department Of Eagles is a duo consisting of the talents of Dan Rossen (pictured left; also of Grizzly Bear fame; his grandfather Robert Rossen directed Hustler with Paul Newman) and Fred Nicolaus (pictured right; his father wrote the definitive translation of Karl Marx's Grundrisse ). These boys are currently working on a follow up to 2005's The Whitey On The Moon UK , which the London Telegraph called " One of those rare and perplexing albums which sounds completely different each of the first [...]
While Ed Droste was catching ears as (mostly) one-man band Grizzly Bear with his Stereogum-beloved 2004 debut Horn Of Plenty, the other songwriting-half of present-day GB, Dan Rossen, was an album into an awesome project of his own: Department Of...

Dan Rossen of Grizzly Bear As we've mentioned, Grizzly Bear was our guest on Blog Radio last night. In case you missed it, here's one of the highlights. Grizzly Bear 's Dan Rossen gave us his beautiful take on " Deep Blue Sea ," a traditional American folk song of mysterious origin that "seems to have been built out of a fragment of an old British ballad or sea song." ( source ) Take the time to listen to this through your headphones; its ethereal beauty is understated and [...]
As you can see here , here , here , and here , we really love Grizzly Bear around these parts. Back in August 2005, when I started writing for this site, we didn't have many readers. One of my first posts was on a duo dubbed Department of Eagles . Since that post, not only has our readership grown exponentially, but one of the Eagles joined a band called Grizzly Bear. I won't repeat all my praises from the first post (you can read it here ). [...]

My old friend Arthur from the band The Algiers - who went to High School at the school right next door to mine - is friends with a guy named Daniel. As it turns out, he sings and guitars in the band Grizzly Bear . It also turns out he's in a band I've liked very much since their first 7", Department of Eagles , with a fellow named Fred with whom I've talked to about Italian movie samples. They used to make drum break & sample collages with bad computer programs that they described as "What [...]
* * * * * The Choir Practice - Up All Day * * * * * At this rate, every band in Canada will soon be just a "collective" of bands from other collectives, armies, scenes and the like. But this is a collective I can be down with: a group of musicians from pretty much every band in Vancouver, fronted by Coco Culbertson from the Gay and AC Newman, all getting together every week for choir [...]
