: Our Favorite Artists and Their Favorite Love Songs I don't have a lot to say about this album compilation from Starbucks but AMAZING! There is an eclectic mix of genres from country to techno and these noteworthy artists did justice to their favorite love songs. Most if not all acoustic versions of the originals and listening to the tracks just give it a coffeehouse vibe (pun intended). Audio quality is great, so nothing to worry about! Get a taste of the [...]

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars At this point in the year, it seems pretty redundant to discuss this album, especially considering all the accolades it has received during the time in which the album leaked onto the Internet. But, be that as it may, one really has to take a look at this album; you would be doing yourself an injustice to ignore Grizzly Bear at this point, and your record collection would be worse off for not adding Veckatimest to your catalog. Even on the [...]

Judee Sill's life was brief, but her music lives on and has influenced countless artists. I was turned on to Judee's work after hearing Fleet Foxes Robin Pecknold cover "Crayon Angel" at several Fleet Foxes shows last year. A sampling of artists will be paying tribute to Sill in a new collection titled Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the music of Judee Sill. The album will be released Sept. 22 on American Dust Records. I'm really bummed that Robin's version of Crayon Angel won't be included, but there's plenty of other great artists appearing on the compilation including [...]

For years I've been watching Subterranean on MTV2, and before that, the original MTV alternative/indie music video show 120 Minutes . While YouTube has lessened the impact of video shows like Subterranean, I still like to tune in each week to see a handful of interesting indie videos. Much like Sirius XMU's "Download 153 playlist, I don't understand why these playlists aren't archived online, so I've taken it upon myself to do so. This week's Subterranean was hosted by The Silversun Pickups. My favorite video this week was "No One Does it Like [...]

(image: Tara Smith) Early last week, when it came to my attention that I'd soon be reaching Quick Before it Melts ' 800th post, I got to thinking about the past three years and what it's all amounted to. Judging from the posts I’ve logged on an (almost) daily basis it seems that I have an awful lot to say about, but oddly enough, faced with this milestone, I find myself oddly at a loss for words. I've said it before, and I've said it this week already, that I love writing this [...]

So this isn't a new one at all, but its just way too good not to put up here. Daniel Rossen is awesome (Grizzly Bear, Dept. of Eagles.) The song is "No One Does It Like You" off Department of Eagles In Ear Park released last year. I'm still debating which version of it I like better, the album or the DUMBO sessions version. You can decide. Department of Eagles - No One Does It Like You (Album Version)
Since it's a day of catching up on stuff I've been meaning to blog about, I thought I'd finally put up my setlist from back in August when I dj'ed the Team Luis show at the Star Bar. Go Tessa. One week shy of eight months late. Ha. Enjoy. [mp3] Chairlift ...

Jenny Holzer - Washinton DC (2007) We're almost halfway through my list of Great Songs of 2008 today... including a song from a stellar Minneapolis hip hop album, one of my favourite music videos of 2008, the Beyonce phenomenon that I almost left off the list until my mom sang the chorus incessantly over Christmas, an [...]
The music video is not dead. Gone are the days of uber creative, uber expensive extravaganzas like "Thriller", but this does not mean the music video has died. The explosion in popularity of video sites such as YouTube , Daily Motion , Vimeo , and the emergence of web video destinations like Pitchfork.tv have given a new home to an art form currently exiled from television. As with much of music today, the truly innovative and creative work comes not from the mainstream, but from the fringes and the underground. Here [...]

Department of Eagles released their first video from the acclaimed In Ear Park for the song "No One Does It Like You." The video was directed by acclaimed visual artist Marcel Dzama and renowned director Patrick Daughters. It is Dzama's first foray into the medium. We normally don't post too many videos, but sometimes you come across some incredible imagery. This qualifies. Video: Department of Eagles - No One Does It Like You

(photo: John Carey) Happy Record Store Day everyone! It’s that time of year again when we celebrate the venerable cornerstone of the music industry’s existence; the hallowed halls where jazz freaks and emo geeks rub shoulders standing before the sacred racks, some scouring alphabetically, some randomly ransacking section “S” in search of scratch-free treasures. Like musty old book stores, record shops have the same mystical power over visitors, as simultaneous attacks on the senses overload. Dazzling and eye-catching album art competes with the unknown aural pleasures emanating from [...]
