I can forgive Alfred Nobel for having invented dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize. - George Bernard Shaw I can't really fit this one in anywhere but first. So a slow start today, but amongst all the madness it's alright. Clearly emphasizing the real genius of The Pixies... songs. Fingerbanger 1 : Maxence Cyrin - Where Is My Mind (Pixies Cover) (don lowed) -- Every atom in your body came from a [...]

With the year coming to an end, one's thoughts usually lean towards the celebratory aspects of the season, but it's also a time to reflect on those we've lost during the year. Wow, sorry, that was a little heavy, but basically this week's OSM is about two fellows that passed away recently that I've been meaning to mention: DJ Roc Raida & Derek B. Grandmaster Roc Raida passed away in September, and while he might not be someone that the public at large or the casual hip hop fan was familiar with, he's [...]
So, pioneering British rapper Derek B has died from a heart attack, aged just 44. First Edward Woodward, now this. What a crappy day. This was his biggest hit (Derek's, not Edward's), 1988's Bad Young Brother ( Sign O' The Times sample and all): I hadn't realised till today that Derek co-wrote The Anfield Rap , the naff but surprisingly memorable Liverpool FA Cup Final song for 1988. (Its naffness and the fact that I don't even support Liverpool still didn't stop the teenage me from buying it [...]

Today news that UK Hip Hop pioneer Derek B has died of a heart attack reached us. I'm not old enough (or that's my excuse) to be super-knowledgable on this legend but others are: Check out DJ MK's tribute to him in which he lists why this DJ and MC was so great (such as "THE FIRST PERSON I EVER SAW IN UK HIP HOP TO HAVE A MOBILE PHONE AND A PORSCHE IN 1987".) DJ Diablo pays his respect here , AllHipHop.com do their bit here and [...]

UK rapper Derek B, one of the first hip hop MCs from Britain to achieve chart success, has passed away after suffering a heart attack in hospital. Whilst he has not been active in the home grown scene for a number of years, Derek B was a prominent figure in the 80s, releasing a string of singles and album Bullet From a Gun in 1988. While critics often panned Derek B for selling out and affecting an American accent, he arguably paved the way for the commercial success others have gained since he made his mark.

Hip hop's golden age lost another icon last week when Mr. Magic died of a heart attack. Mr. Magic was the original voice of hip hop radio - his show the Rap Attack was the first hip hop based program to air on a major commercial radio station, and you can likely trace every second NY legend back to Mr. Magic through some connection or another. Mr. Magic was joined on the Rap Attack by Marley Marl and Fly Ty, so at the very least he played a major role in birthing Cold Chillin', one of [...]
I thought what with the Bad Meaning Good documentary I put you up on the other day, why not bring you some old school ( skool ?) biznizz from Derek B. This man made a coveted Top of the Pops appearance back in the halcyon days of the golden era (yawn - if you're only about the "golden era" then you're a fusty curmudgeon). I'm not sure if Derek B was taken seriously by the wider scene when he was making moves, although no-one can deny he was making moves. Apparently he even did some [...]

It's hard to believe it's time for the forth annual Christmas mix. When I'd first started compiling them, I'd see the occasional holiday song collection here and there. Now, bloggers start posting seasonal tunes in late November right up to December 25th. I prefer to save it for one collection of the best I've come across over the last twelve months - once this is posted, work starts on next year's mix. A good compilation is evocative of the holiday, each song should resonate experiences of past seasons, I believe this one does just that - enjoy! [...]
Well I didn't have a theme this week, so I had to fall back on a song I've been meaning to post for a while. That song is Derek B's Get Down . And yes, I have been meaning to post this for a while. Why you ask? Well, I'd heard this song a zillion years ago on a compilation owned by my cousin's best friends older brother. Despite being a hip hop tape hoarder, this was the first time I'd heard this jam, and I enjoyed it muchly. It turns out this album was Mr. Magic's Rap [...]
