My 5 Favorite Things: Kevin Saunderson

Detroit techno progenitor Kevin Saunderson made an indelible mark on electronic music when he — along with childhood friends Derrick May and Juan Atkins — helped take dance music into the future in the '80s. Known as the Belleville Three, the three DJ/producers kickstarted a sound that continues to blossom in the global underground. While [...]

Sleep D – Raw Nuts [Exclusive WAV Download]

Sleep D – Raw Nuts [Exclusive WAV Download] Melbourne is already well renowned for it's influx of talent in recent years. Names need not be mentioned but a relatively unknown duo (for now at least) are preparing for great things themselves. Sleep D (Maryos Syawish & Corey Kikos) have been supporting the biggest acts rolling through Melbourne with the Novel parties, with slots alongside Derrick May, Robag Wruhme, Trus'Me & Matthew Dear to name a few. The Sleep D sound is refreshing to hear, even a city as amazing as Melbourne is prone to trends, and the boys are [...]

Don't need a crowd to have a party

Don't need a crowd to have a party Here are a couple of jams I picked up in NYC. I have been looking for this Ragtyme record for years and was so glad to find it. Unfortunately, my hectic travel schedule put a slight warp in it but it plays OK on my Beogram. I grabbed a bunch of nice early techno and house records in NYC; I don't think they don't know how good they have it over there. Ragtyme was a project produced by Marshall Jefferson and represents soulful deep house at its best. There is plenty of smooth with lots of edge to [...]

Remembering Detroit Electronic Music Journalist Dan Sicko

Remembering Detroit Electronic Music Journalist Dan Sicko Veteran Detroit electronic music journalist Dan Sicko passed away on Sunday after a lengthy battle with ocular melanoma, a rare form of eye cancer. He was 42. In the pre-Internet '80s and '90s where techno was relegated to the underground, Sicko helped document the burgeoning Motor City scene led by Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Juan Atkins. His book 1999 book, Techno Rebels , paid homage to the music and served as a first-hand account of the music's ascension in Detroit and beyond. In addition to his music writing, Sicko worked in advertising as [...]

Big Shot Guest Mix: Kevin Saunderson

Big Shot Guest Mix: Kevin Saunderson Last we heard from Detroit techno icon Kevin Saunderson he was a wee bit angry at Italian duo Supernova for sampling his track "The Sound." Fortunately things were amicably resolved — doesn't everyone like a happy ending? — and Saunderson has carried on. Known for his classic techno and house tracks, Saunderson continues to look to the future. He's on tour this summer as a solo artist and with Derrick May as Hi Tek Soul, and he's also relaunched Inner City and Octave One. Saunderson just dropped this phenomenal mix on us. We're not exactly sure [...]

Rhythim is Rhythim – Strings of Life

Rhythim is Rhythim – Strings of Life It doesn't get any better that this with Derrick May releasing this tune under his Rhythim is Rhythim alias in 1987. With its DNA firmly in the Belleville camp, rumour has it that it was actually Frankie Knuckles that came up with the name. A trail blazing tune that will destroy any dance floor to passes over. Its all about the strings! Rhythim is Rhythim - Strings of Life by Geistling

Classic Sounds

Classic Sounds Yo Boppers. First up we've got some Roy Ayer's proto/early House. This track has a very jazzy composition with repetitive lyrics overdubbed. Classic sounding and classic in every way. Nice classic tune. Roy Ayers - Fast Money - Next track, we have some early "techno" by Derrick May. You could easily throw this in on a modern dancefloor and it would probably still be effective. Fun track with lots of classic sounds. Good times. [...]

Planet E Brings Detroit Techno to District 36

Planet E Brings Detroit Techno to District 36 Super music nerd that I am, I've recently been spending my nights off teaching myself the entire history of electronic music (because who doesn't want to spend hours reading about the TB-303). I've always experienced a certain feeling of nostalgia for a time that I never knew; I feeling that I arrived in this world just the tiniest bit too late to have the thorough understanding of the inception of the electronic sound that accompanied being a young adult in the 802s and 902s. This feeling, paired with my natural tendencies toward academia and scholarly pursuits, has essentially meant that [...]

Ads: Seventeen people who better represent Detroit than Eminem

In thinking about the Chrysler advertisement from this Sunday's Super Bowl 45, which features landmarks and scenery, downtown and outskirt areas of fair and unfortunately mostly forgotten Detroit and, of course, Detroit-born-raised-and-repres enting Eminem (nee Marshall Mathers) and in which the motor company spent millions of dollars for two full minutes of advertising time for "Imported [...]

The Dirtbombs Cover Detroit Techno

The Dirtbombs will release an album of Detroit techno covers titled Party Store on February 1 via In the Red Records. The group takes a stab at songs from Cybotron, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson and Carl Craig, who also contributes to the reproduction of his song, "Bug in the Bass Bin," released under the Innerzone Orchestra moniker in 1992. Detroit is one of the originators of techno, so it's no surprise the throwback-loving Dirtbombs have shed some new light on their hometown history. We were lucky enough to sit down with the group, who hipped [...]

[Mixtape] One Night All Day Long

[Mixtape] One Night All Day Long I recently recruited my good friend Jon Alexander to put together a mixtape for the site. His musical IQ is pretty high and I gave him free reign to pretty much do whatever he wanted. What I got back was a nice retrospective look into the world of electronic music and the experience of electronic music in Detroit. Here's what Jon had to say about the mix: When Chris asked me to curate a mixtape for Dailybeatz, there was not a moment of hesitation. I had to create an electronic and techno [...]

Joris Voorn : Interview and Mix

Joris Voorn : Interview and Mix One of the biggest names in dance music? Definitely. Here at WANARB we were lucky enough to catch up with the DJ/Producer to ask him about his favourite moments, his upcoming album, the period features in his house and how he seems to find time to play at the majority of European festivals. WANARB : Hi Joris, you've been a busy man, you've managed to squeeze in a ridiculous amount of festivals this summer, what's been the highlight so far? Joris : My favourite festival? [...]

Nude Photo

Nude Photo Being the founder of a genre has to be an incredible feeling. Instead of copying Chicago House, or New York Garage jams, Derrick May, along with Kevin Saunderson, and Juan Atkins created a fresh electronic music sound in Detroit. The sounds of early techno are incredibly interesting even to this day. Techno is an exploration of sound and form. It meanders around and displays different patterns and variations of timbre instead of opting for the standard song structure found in house music. As we all know, the British (thanks Black Shag) turned techno into a 160bpm shit sandwich [...]
