It's another Wild Weekend , edition 66 to be precise. A six pack filled with soul, jazzy tropicália , brand new garage rock, rocksteady, and flamenco. And a rather rare Dylan cover by Steve Wynn's Dream Syndicate. Wild scenes inside the goldmine then so. I'd like to start this issue with a birthday song, as the missus celebrated hers a couple days ago. Many happy returns, my dear. Especially for you, here's Kathy Young, with a soulful lament from 1961, so way before you were even born. A while back, [...]
"At the center is "Gypsy Woman," a track that never made it to the Jamaican top 10, but somehow really is essential Morgan."

It seems as though all of our past/current writers here at The Yellow Stereo have gotten married over the past few years. In 2007, Pablo tied the knot and in response I decided to hastily put together a mix of songs I would want to hear at a wedding. It proved more difficult than I imagined, as every other song I could think of was from Magnetic Fields. That list is here if you wanted to see how that turned out; and oddly enough, it's one of the first links that show up when [...]

"My face is so pretty you can´t see a scar, that makes me the king in the ring by far..." Some killer reggae from the days when boxing was still fun and the rivalry between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier held the world spellbound. Big title bouts like the Thrilla in Manilla captured the imagination on the island of Jamaica too apparently, as many a knockout reggae song paid tribute to the legendary heavyweights. Note that toasters Big Youth and Dennis Alcapone both use Burning Spear´s legendary riddim to salute Smokin´ Joe. "With the [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Groundbreaking rocksteady guitarist Lynn Taitt -- who played on influential records by the Skatalites, Derrick Morgan and Desmond Dekker passed away last Wednesday, according to the Jamaica Gleaner . Taitt, who was 75 and a Montreal resident, succumbed to cancer. Every time I call You tell me that you soon come I call you on the phone You tell me that you soon come Peter Tosh - Soon Come The Harder They Come (musical) Salut à tous et bonne année 2010 !! Oui, bon, je sais, j'ai pris un peu de retard dans la série des articles sur la culture Reggae, mais bon c'est finalement la bonne occasion d'illustrer un concept fondamental de la culture jamaïquaine: [...]

Jerk is a method of cooking meats that comes from the original inhabitants of Jamaica, the Arawaks. They roasted meats over fires of pimento wood from the allspice tree. Pimento wood gave a distinctive flavor to the meat and is still used for jerk grilling in Jamaica. Jerk marinades and rubs are often quite spicy with Scotch bonnet peppers. Recipes vary widely, but true jerk seasoning contains allspice. This recipe is for chicken, but pork, goat and even fish are also jerked. [ Recipes ]. " TGIF ! " 01. Laurel Aitken [...]

The Skatalites & The Trojans live at Shinkiba Studio Coast - Tokyo Japan Résumé du précèdent épisode..
You don't need to be George W. Bush to wage preemptive war. When the reggae toaster I Roy saw his microphone dominance challenged in the mid seventies, he struck his competition first, delivering the scorching track "Straight to Jazzbo's Head." Naturally, the song prompted retaliation from the up-and-coming Prince Jazzbo, and it touched off one of reggae's great lyrical feuds.

Derrick Morgan: Blazing Fire and Conquering Ruler From: Seven Letters [Trojan, 1969] The sunny days of May already seem like a distant memory as the rain continues to drizzle all over my expectations of a great British summer. Add to this that I seem to have contracted a particularly nasty case of Man flu and my mood isn't the greatest. So, working from home with the rain lashing down outside and dosed up to the eyeballs with the best over the counter [...]

Trojan Records was founded in 1967 by Jamaican-English producer Lee Gopthal as something of a sister label to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. It became one of the best-known and successful reggae labels, but it also bought out several independent Jamaican labels and ended up with a pretty good ska and rock-steady back catalog. In 1972, it went through these archives and put out a fantastic (if somewhat inaccurately-named) compilation, The Trojan Story . Although the liner notes were somewhat sparse and the sound rough, you couldn't want a better overview [...]
There were two other recent total lunar eclipses, but this will be last the one for almost three years, and the U.S. is lined up to get the best views. This NASA eclipse page has some good info, including exact start times of the different phases of the eclipse. The total eclipse, where the moon is completely shadowed by the sun, will last for almost an hour, beginning right at 10:00PM EST (9:00PM CST), and this mix is designed to be started about half an hour beforehand. This is also a good time to brush up on some [...]
