It's somewhat ironic to consider anything as harsh as Black Flag or The Jesus Lizard "refreshing," but that was the first thought that raced to my mind when "False Jesii Part 2," the opening track on King of Jeans came blasting out of my headphones.
Every pop-punk band worth their wait in salt sugar has got to have a couple of songs about the opposite sex. Though some bands traffic exclusively in the topic, even bands like Bad Religion and NOFX have been known to get into the act. Rancid's biggest commercial single was "Ruby Soho," a ska-punk hit that was right on topic. And before Green Day got political, their first few albums were almost exclusively mired in pop-punk longing. On the surface, We Be Xuxa almost seems like a retread of old school American punk, but actually it evokes without constant copying—it's fresh-faced punk, yet my heart hears Born Innocent -era Redd Kross in their sisterly choruses, and early early Black Flag or even Ramones in their strumming (minus Greg Ginn's noodling) and Wipers downturns on the chords, and a Darby Crash-like insistence on writing lyrics too self-referential and profound to sing straight into the microphone.
