If it's somehow passed you by, Sound City Players is the latest super-super-group led by Dave Grohl. Centred around the legendary Sound City Studio, the band brings together loads of the artists featured in the wonderful feature-length documentary written and directed by Grohl. That they are all playing live with a record for sale as well makes it a 360-degree experience. We saw the film, got the album and went to the gig. Here's a review of the last bit. Six things we learnt watching the [...]
If you think this tune sounds familiar (or the name does), then you might be thinking of Queens of the Stone Age's In My Head of which this is the original version. Desert Sessions is pretty much just that: Josh Homme takes a group of musicians to a ranch out in the desert and they jam and record music. Some of their output has gone on to be re-recorded by Queens of Stone Age, including this one. This version isn't quite as heavy as the Queens of the Stone Age version, but it does feature a [...]

Los Angeles electro-rock band Standing Shadows just spent 2 weeks recording in Joshua Tree desert with producer Chris Goss (Queens of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Duke Spirit, UNKLE) at Dave Catching’s studio, Rancho de la Luna , along with engineer Ethan Allen (Gram Rabbit, Daniel Lanois, Spindrift) . They have sweated out 3 amazing new songs in the ungodly desert heat to be released in October 2011. From glockenspiels and FunMachines, to keytars and pots and pans, the band played on...

Founded by the Queens of the Stone Age ’s Josh Homme, Rekords Rekords makes no qualms about what their mission is: “[The label] exists for one purpose,” they say, “to make music – just art in its purest form.” And while music-savvy consumers are already poised to break the bank on Record Store Day , the imprint has just added another release that is sure to squeeze even more money out of their little plastic debit cards. The release is being handled by UK-based, Domino Records and comes in the form of [...]

While not busily recording/touring with the So-Cal rock quartet RX Bandits , or jamming with side-projects like Apotheke or The Sound of Animals Fighting , Chris Tsagakis (or C-Gak) records experimental electronic music under the moniker Technology. With a heavy influence from dub music and bands like Tortoise and Massive Attack, Technology's musical landscapes + amazing live drumming is a wonderful escape into another world of sounds. I don't know why I have negelcted to post anything on C-Gak or Technology before since I am a huge fan of every project he has been [...]

Speak to me of universal laws The whores hustle and the hustlers whore All around me people bleed Speak to me your song of greed Speak to me of your inner charm Of how you'll keep me safe from harm I don't think so, I don't see Speak to me of your inner peace Little people at the amusement park City people in the dark Speak to us, send us a sign Tell us something to [...]

Welcome to part one of GIMME TINNITUS' Best Songs Of The Aughts where we look back on the best songs of 2000-2004. Back when all the "best of the decade" whoopla started earlier this year (with Pitchfork's Best Of ), I began thinking about the songs I would have blogged about had I actually been blogging (or let's say posting about music on an angelfire page) way back in 2000. I sifted through many tracks to come up with this list, and I hope it helps you reconnect with some tracks you may have forgotten [...]
songs that currently make my head bang and speaking of stoner rock, this is pretty funny. some stoner gets on the price is right and bids $420 on everything.
Song: Undertaker Artist: Pussy Galore Album: Live: In The Red Comments: Lux Interior, lead singer for the Cramps, died last week. Other than the shock of his death, I was shocked that he was 62 years old. Then I realized that when I was born he was only 24 and prime to start his legendary rock and roll odyseey. At this point in my life the rock stars are only going to get younger. In a couple of years Rollins, Ian Mackaye, and Jello Biafra will all hit the 50 mark or be [...]

Joshua Homme, from Queens of the Stoneage , has run a music collective called "Desert Session", since 1997. Musicians, mostly rock musicians, gather in the desert for a few weeks at Joshua Tree, and make music together. The results are published on a record named "Desert Session". Among the bands and artists that have participated you'll find Monster Magnet , Kyuss , Soundgarden and many more! A band that Joshua should invite is Dollface! The music that Dollface delivers is a well composed rock music, that attracts me using nice Les Paul carpets and [...]

In timp ce unii erau pe la festivaluri... Desert Sessions - Nenada (w/ Natasha) You'll gonna be missed...

I'm not sure how many Queens of the Stone Age fans we have among our reader-base but I'm unashamed to admit that I've been paying close attention to them for the past five years. As such, I noticed a trend that continues on the upcoming album Era Vulgaris . Every single QOTSA studio release has at least one track that they've yoinked from a prior Desert Sessions release. The Desert Sessions are basically jam sessions of a sort where Homme and [...]

sometime in 92 i walked into my local record shop, the long since outta business, red tower records in orland park, il. i was probably in there at least 4 times a week, so i had a bit of a relationship with the folks that worked there. it was one of my main sources for new music, plus i had nothing much to do and there were worse places to spend my days and monies. this particular day the staff was fawning over kyuss' blues for the red sun. even as cool as i [...]

Mark Lanegan, Alain Johannes, Natasha Shneider, Chris Goss, Brendon [...]
